Quick Question

Taking away the win at Arrowhead, what’s Pinkel’s signature win with a ranked Missouri team?

Nebraska, two weeks ago.

Disclaimer

(This is no way is intended to be a “Bash Pinkel” starter. I’m just trying to think when he had a big “we met the next challenge” moment that didn’t involve winning in Boulder, Manhattan or Lincoln for the first time in ages.)

wait...

…taking away Pinkel’s signature win, what’s Pinkel’s signature win? Is that the question?

Are we all in agreement that KU was a fraud?

If we are, then the question stands.

Last year?

That they made the Orange Bowl was a fraud, but they were still a Top 10 team.

I'd have to say either...

1) Winning in Nebraska in blowout fashion

or

2) Winning a good bowl game vs. Arkansas in blowout fashion…running the ball as a passing spread offense

By the way

Anyone notice that Coffman has HUGE games in losses?

by RPT on Oct 18, 2008 10:39 PM CDT reply actions

Umm... this is because Coffman has huge games against the best teams we play.

I watched the game with a good friend of mine who’s a UT grad (yeah, I just about booted him at halftime, but anyway…) I told him before the game that our best player was Coffman, and he said he didn’t really know about him because all he hears about is Daniel and Maclin. Then during the game he was getting so upset when they couldn’t stop Coffman, and I kept telling him “he’s just good, don’t get too upset if he beats you. Get upset if De’vion Moore beats you or Tommy Saunders beats you.”

At the end of the game, he was like “wow, that Coffman guy is really good”

I REALLY don't understand how everyone ignores him

Maybe if he put his hand on the ground, everyone would give him the love he deserves as a “real” tight end.

I'm just disappointed...

…that he spent his best nunchuk thrust ever when nobody was watching.

best EVER?

I dunno. It was definitely against the best team so far….

he jumped so freaking high on that one...

the guy is downright amazing

and I think if we get a shot at UT a second time around, we will see more Chase Coffman. It didn’t really look like they had an answer for him. Oh, and hopefully we’ll see a whole lotta deep balls to Maclin. Maclin had his man beat several times they sent him deep, but Chase kept under-throwing it.

More quick questions:

- Who takes most of the blame for tonight?

- Does this Missouri team lack in leadership?

… and everyone prepare accordingly for this question:

- Is Missouri a fraud? Where do the Tigers deserve to be after tonight?

re:

1- Coordinators, some early bad luck, UT defensive line

2- Not sure. We will know after the next four games. Losing to UT at UT does not a bad team make.

3- I don’t think so. Somewhere in the top 20

I should clarify:

I don’t blame Mizzou for losing. Texas is a damn good football team. But not even putting up a fight is a different story.

Mizzou has the best two losses of any two-loss team in the country. But what win stands out right now with Illinois having the trouble they’ve had?

It doesn't matter, does it?

Win the next five games, and we’ve met one of our two goals for the season. The other one is long gone.

We got beat by a better football team tonight

but we still control our own destiny: Win the Big XII North (most likely will be accomplished regardless of the KU game), win the Big XII, and make a BCS bowl. These are ALL ACHIEVABLE GOALS! And better football teams lose sometimes (see MU, last week), so we will have a chance against UT the second time around.

Run the table

Beat KU at Arrowhead, play the South team at Arrowhead the next week (Cold, home crowd) and you achieve most of your goals for the season.

Lose another game, and the season is a loss.

by SleepyFloyd7 on Oct 18, 2008 10:50 PM CDT up reply actions

anything less than the north championship is a loss

even if we lose three, it doesn’t matter, as long as the third loss isn’t to KU. The third loss (assuming it doesn’t cost us the Big XII north) would be meaningless to our aspirations of BCS. If anything it may help UT take is much less seriously (assuming they win the south)

Response

1) I think MU will win the North. They will run the table in the North. MU will finish 6-2 in conference…I can’t see them losing to anyone else at this point.

2) They will get Texas in the Big XII Championship game and get killed again…

3) Thus, they will not be in a BCS Bowl game with 3 losses. I could see if they won last week, then lost to UT twice, like last year with Oklahoma…but not with 3 losses.

by stlfan on Oct 18, 2008 10:54 PM CDT up reply actions

My thoughts after the last two weeks

I refused to comment after last week’s game (for the most part…maybe one comment, can’t remember) because I wanted to see how they came back this week against Texas. My main thought is that the defense for MU is too nice. I know…it’s about the worst thing that you can say about a defense, but it’s true. They really are too nice. I’m not talking about being soft here…not talking about giving up huge pass plays down the (usually) right side of the field…not talking about going for strips instead of big hits that might prevent a catch.

They help the other team back up, they don’t have 2-3 players hitting an opponent with the ball every play at the end of the play. I watched UT’s and OSU’s defenses repeatedly land on MU players once or twice after the man was down for two straight weeks and Mizzou’s offense looked worn out at the end of the game each time. They would blast a Tiger and turn around and walk away. They wouldn’t stick around and help others up around him. Mizzou’s defense has simply been too nice.

They need to start being bad-asses. That’s it. Just run, hit, turn around and do it again. That is it. Nothing less.

by stlfan on Oct 18, 2008 10:52 PM CDT reply actions

no offense

Sort-of disagree. I still see a hard-hitting (if sometimes poor tackling) defense that has trouble getting an effective pass rush, which makes it more difficult on the secondary. I see too-aggressive defense play calling, when the standard setup seems be to more effective. I don’t see a team that’s too nice. Good sportsmanship does not weaken a defense.

Not only that...

But every time the scheme has tried to be more “badass” by sending the blitz, it’s gotten torched.

Fly to the ball and make plays. It’s simple, but that’s the only recipe for success.

the good news...

…is that we can blitz the hell out of Cody Hawkins, Josh Freeman and Austen Arnaud. And we can anti-blitz (back off, make him throw) the hell out of Robert Griffin. We don’t face another QB who can make us pay for the blitz until Todd Reesing (unless we have a horrendously stupid gameplan against Baylor).

By "Badass"...

I did not mean blitz all the time. I was criticizing the 3rd down play calling all night long. I still think they have been too nice lately and I’m not seeing anything here to prove me otherwise. I do not disagree with the sportsmanship statement. I believe in sportsmanship tremendously.
