The result was a 58-0 blowout that ranks as the low point of Dan Hawkins' coaching tenure at Colorado. But even with those struggles, I'm betting that Hawkins and Colorado fans will long remember how Gary Pinkel reinserted his first-string defense back into the game in the final minutes to get a late stop that preserved the shutout.
From Tim Griffin's "What We Learned" post on the Dot Com. As was explained to me multiple times when I saw Bill Snyder do the exact same thing, a) it's okay when their defense is trying to keep you off the board (as opposed to their offense running the score up, and b) if your first-stringers are in, their first-stringers can be in. And...really? I'm pretty sure Dan Hawkins and Colorado fans are much more likely to remember giving up 58 points and not scoring for the first 58 minutes either. Scoring a late junk TD against Mizzou's 2nd-string wouldn't have made them feel any better.

It makes no sense, to me, to complain about that (and I said as much on their blog). I completely agree with a), but not so much with b). You can’t run up the score with your Defense. It’s the other team’s responsibility to keep trying to get the lead, and it’s your job to keep them from scoring.

wow, just saw that...
…now, I don’t know if more CU fans think that way than just the one guy, but still…I remember being pissed when Bill Snyder did that to us, but in retrospect I realize that I was mostly pissed because my own team was that helpless. And yeah…they can be annoyed that Daniel came back in at the beginning of Q4 (we were a little annoyed too—we wanted to see Gabbert get two drives), but getting mad about the end is just misdirected anger…I say that with certainty, as a fan of a team that has been blown out many a time…

I think...
we should all be pissed at D. Moore…I mean, come, stop running dude. Gabbert needs PT. Just because the safeties pushed the LOS on that play and you had no one in front of you doesn’t mean you get to score. Honestly!!!
Otherwise…great game at a great moment in the season. Baylor at 2, baby.

My wife couldn't understand why I was pissed at that TD
I explained that now CU would get another chance to end the shutout, rather than us milking a few minutes off the clock.

I saw this earlier
And I thought the exact same thing, but considering my general disagreement with Tim Griffin, I didn’t want to be the one to bring it up.

and then again...
…Gary Pinkel may have actually agreed with Griffin.
Kudos to Dan Hawkins for not kicking a meaningless field goal on the final drive just to extend the nation’s third-longest scoring streak. Pinkel later admitted he might have handled that decision differently to avoid the shutout.
I still agreed with the call, even if Pinkel now disagrees with himself…

It sounds to me like Pinkel is saying
he would have kicked the FG to avoid the shutout, not that he should have kept his 2nd stringers in there.

You are likely correct. I totally misread that…I rule.

It goes both ways
The whole “let’s run the ball to kill clock so they won’t get the ball back and ram it down our throats again but then use all our timeouts when we get across midfield and continue to run the ball” strategem is irritating as well.
