Ask an Iowa State fan
Hey all.
If you guys would like to leave questions here concerning ISU football, I'll do my best to answer them.
The preliminary forecast for the game is mid 30s and dropping temperatures with flurries and 30-45 mph winds......
Here's to us surprising the world.
Hopefully it's just one of those crazy games where weird shit happens. We want that telephone back - it'd be a nice little consolation prize after our disaster of a season. Though, if it came down to it, I'd much rather have you guys in an easy place to win the division than either of those other two.

not entirely on the subject...but
A work buddy is headed up there Friday night and looking to enjoy what your campus has to offer…
Any thoughts/suggestions on bars and midnight dives for him to drink and eat at?

As far as places to eat
Hickory Park has to be experienced at least once. Good cheap BBQ joint that is a tradition. Huge portions and good food. Another choice would be Olde Main Brewing Company, a place with a little classier food and its own microbrewery.
As far as bars…..it depends on the age.
The older folks in town go downtown to places like Olde Main before going to the downtown bars. If this friend is closer to college age, there’s a variety of bars in CampusTown, just south of campus, that are a source of cheap booze.
However, like a lot of Staters, I typically get my drink on at house parties, but that may not be his cup of tea.
I truly encourage him to tailgate Saturday too. It might be a little down with basketball at the same time, but chances are he wouldn’t walk away hungry if he runs into the right people.

(my buddy appreciates the knowledge)
As for some actual talk about the squad, how have you felt about the progress of the team over both the past couple of years and as this season has gone on (especially I guess after the heart-breaker vs. kU)

After the loss to Iowa
…things sort of snowballed, which can happen with a young team. I still personally think that Gene’s the man for the job, but this year has been quite frustrating. We’ve left three games out there in UNLV, Kansas and Colorado. We should be 5-5. We could be 5-5. We aren’t. But we’re ridiculously young. Hopefully it comes with time.

Chizik - still very early in his head coaching career
2000, 2001, 2002, 2004, 2005 Bowl Games. Obviously, not all of that was Seneca Wallace, so you guys were having at least some success in the last decade, but it’s not like you were stacked when Chizik took over in 2007.
1. What are the levels of expectation in Iowa State? Would getting back to bowls be sufficient, or is it expected that he compete for the Division?
2. Is there a timetable for how long he has to achieve this, or will the fan base be satisfied with a slow level of progress?
3. Will anyone really care how long it takes him if the basketball team gets good again and you can continue to be competitive with Iowa?
4. Does ISU have an in-conference rival? Do they enjoy being the team that no one dislikes? (seriously, I have never heard anyone say they “Hate” Iowa State – maybe that they hate having to play at Jack Trice or Hilton, but not the school or teams)

1. The goal was a bowl game this year and to contend for the North next year. Things are running a little behind. Bowl games are part of the equation, but McCarney’s inability to win the division is why he was ultimately ousted. Next year our schedule is pretty favorable for a nice run, but I thought the same this year.
2. They’ll be satisfied with slow progress as long as there is progress. Stagnation this year and next year won’t work. Anything less than a bowl game next year has to be viewed as disappointment. That being said, Chizik will get the length of his contract unless something strange happens.
3. We’re on our way to becoming a football team, I think… No can rationally expect our basketball team to be much better soon (I’m not a McDermott fan). We have no business competing with Iowa considering the budget differences, but it’s the expectation to beat them every single year. It’s not a hope. We plan to beat them. Our fans are knowledgeable that it takes time, but they won’t wait forever.
4. Eh, probably Nebraska after the woodshed whippings they’ve given us in the past. It’s kind of weird to be honest. I’ll tell you that most Cyclone fans like Oklahoma State, for whatever that’s worth.

That is funny about Okie State
Since I would figure given the high level of fan interest in wrestling that this would not at ALL be the case. (I know the Iowa/Iowa State dual is a HUGE deal, but still)

Wrestling
Most people don’t live and die by it. That’s a misconception. Sure, we kick ass, but the best athletes in the state are still going to play football, and it’ll always rank third (or fourth) at ISU.

That is interesting to me....
I dont know that I would have believed living and dying by it, but I guess I would have expected a little more interest in it. I am sure it is eons ahead of where Mizzou is, but I guess I am still surprised a little to hear that.

UVSU?
I’m not familiar with that.

yeah...that is pretty impressive to me
since we would not draw 3,000 for anything short of WWE when it comes to wrestling at Mizzou
