I think this is bad news for the Big XII
I have to say I am a bit surprised by this given Mack Brown's age, but if anyone can pull off having a coach in waiting for perhaps as much as a decade, I guess it would be the money-bags of UT.

I understand why UT fans are excited...
…and they are, to say the least, excited…
But I’m not necessarily scared of this hire. Muschamp could be an amazing head coach, but fiery defensive coordinators aren’t gimme successes in the head job. I’m definitely taking a wait-and-see approach with this one…and yeah…we could be waiting to see for quite a while…

I am not so much worried about him as a head coach as I am
for him being a fiery coordinator for the conceivable future. I figured he would be gone in a year or two to a head coaching job.

Doesn't this just seem WAY too early for this kind of offer?
I mean, I know he’s achieved cult hero status down there, but honestly, he’s been their defensive coordinator for less a full season, and they’re already going to just give him the job after Mack leaves? It’s one thing to be worried you’re going to lose him at the end of the season, but this just seems over the top.
Then again, it probably also means Muschamp’s got one hell of an agent. He’s got job security in a career that generally offers very little.

But...
UT is digging one hell of a hole here. If, for any reason, Muschamp f’s up, and they get rid of him, I have to think that there is language in his contract giving him a massive buy out. On the other side, having the “coach in waiting” is great from recruiting, if only that you there’s always the knowledge that the program really won’t change if the head coach does.

We're excited
Mostly because this greatly diminishes the chances Muschamp leaves us in a year or two. We understand the benefits or mostly short-term. Obviously, it’d be ideal he waits around for several years for Mack to retire, but there’s no guarantee of that. However, with a team now that’s still in the hunt for a national title and a 2009 team primed for a great run as well, it really is nice to have him around. It’ll also be a great card to play in recruiting.
