I don't think Mizzou can win this game

But I hope I’m wrong. If Leo and DeMarre can get going early, maybe we can win this thing.

Your 2008 Missouri Tigers! #12 9-2 (5-2). Next up kU at Arrowhead. BIG 12 NORTH CHAMPS!

Very, very glad that Quin is gone.

Brian Dailey would discover him passed out in an alley in downtown San Juan right about…

…now.

Caught this off of T-board...might work for audio/vidio

try this

also…I dont know if KMOX.com does streaming audio while the game is on or not…I “believe” Mizzou is on there for hoops.

Didn't get to see or listen to it...

…I was at the Rockets/Mavs game and the game was blocked on FSN KC down here in Houston, so my DVR didn’t record it. Sounded like they played pretty poorly, but were never in serious danger of losing the game. It’s going to be a roller-coaster year for the Cats. I’m hoping for right around .500 in conference play, maybe just a little better because I can’t take my fan-glasses off all the time.

Balance, balance, balance

We have six guys averaging double figure points right now, led by redshirt freshman Jamar Samuels. Now obviously, that’s against pretty bad competition, but we’re averaging 88.7 points per game.

Honestly, I think we’re going to miss Beasley’s rebounding at least as much as his scoring.

I dont buy that at all

nevermind how we should be NOWHERE NEAR losing this game if not for fundamental flaws, you have to know more about the game and where you are. An open look from 3 is not a high percentage shot when you need 2 points.

To me…that is lack of coaching, lack of fundamentals and just disappointing all the way around

Chicago White Sox Examiner — Your what hurts?

by UribeAuction on Nov 20, 2008 3:25 PM CST reply actions

yes it is early in THIS season...but it is not early in Anderson's career here

As Gabe put it so well (and I am paraphrasing)…the faces may have changed, but the mistake remain the same to close the half and to close the game.

And to me…that HAS to be on the coach.

The fact that Denmon ran to the 3-point line on that 2 on 1 with 20 seconds to go and down by one is a fundamental mistake, showing he had no concept of the game flow. Hell…call a timeout and set something up there. the 7-20 from the line in the 2nd half is inexcusable, and to me on both players and coaching. The mistakes are a constant, so to me, you have to look at what else the constant with this team has been. And PLEASE dont make me go back and find his record for us in games decided by less than 6 points….it is really REALLY bad.

agreed

the concern i’ve always had is that our system can be broken by good coaching. our team runs on turnovers. that is our fuel. when the turnovers aren’t there we become a very mediocre team.

we play at such a frantic base that for 36 minutes on the game we usually are the better team. however, at the end of the halves when things slow down and it becomes a possession and half-court game we are lost.

the reason that the coaching concerns are always brought up after these types of games is because the issues are the same year in and year out.

I went and looked it up...

4-16 in games in Anderson’s career when the margin was 6 points or less….

The system works fine until the game slows down…then we dont have the discipline to get it done…that is pretty damning right there.

I'm sorry

but free throws aren’t Anderson’s fault. I guarantee that he, like every other coach in the country, preaches them and practices them to no end. He can’t go out there and make them. He put the team in every position to win today, and the guys choked. C-H-O-K-E-D, plain and simple. The best coach in the world can’t help you when your best two guys are 2-of-10 from the line in the second half.

by calim on Nov 20, 2008 4:55 PM CST up reply actions

And I would tell you that team was NOT in a position

to win today because they don’t know HOW to win close games….as pretty darn evident by the stat I showed above…which made NO mention of the free throws from today’s game. A more prepared team does not have someone stop at the 3-point line on a 2 on 1 with 25 seconds to go…you have two choices there…drive or call timeout…we somehow found a third.

Mike has us at about 35 minutes of hell right now, but has showed time and time again that he has little ability to coach the most important 5 minutes. His teams regularly and year over year display little fundamentals or discipline in these situations…the faces change, but the problems have not.

And while the players shoot them, I would argue that coaches CAN impact free throw shooting to some extent. Not change it entirely…but can alter it by coaching, motivating and teaching. But the greatest coach in the world would have had a team who is better equiped to deal with close-game situations. The greatest coach in the world we do not have.

A bit of rebuttal
They don’t know HOW to win close games

You mean the team with seven newcomers who were playing their first game as Tigers away from Mizzou Arena? The team who had two of its four primary upperclassman leaders on the bench fouled out? Should we expect them to know how to win already, or is this not part of the process?

A more prepared team does not have someone stop at the 3-point line on a 2 on 1 with 25 seconds to go…you have two choices there…drive or call timeout…we somehow found a third.

What you’re saying is absolutely correct fundamentally, but when talking about the Denmon shot, let me ask you this: Given the way every Tiger not named Lyons or Carroll went to the basket and failed to finish in that game, what would have happened if they drove the lane? The rest of the game dictates that they probably would have gone up to strong, missed the basket, get fouled and miss the free throws. Denmon had a look.

Mike has us at about 35 minutes of hell right now, but has showed time and time again that he has little ability to coach the most important 5 minutes

I’m not going to argue with you here. I think it’s a flaw that’s inherent in the system. It’s like faulting an option team in college football for not being equipped to come from behind. I’m not saying it’s right or wrong.

Pinkel for America '08

by RPT on Nov 21, 2008 12:35 AM CST up reply actions

Well..but that is a pretty damn big flaw

Especially when you are staring 4-16 in the face for a program where you have yet to accomplish many goals set forth, and in fact, have had issues extremely similar to the guy who got released before for the same issues.

And please know…I like Mike Anderson…he would have been my choice…but considering the ridiculousness of the past two seasons being splashed all over the newspaper for roughly the same stuff we got rid of Quin for, along with this GLARING inability to win a close game….well…the body of work is getting pretty long to not be representing some pretty disturbing trends….new people or not. Three seniors were on the floor for most of this game…you cannot tell me they handled the end of the game any better than the frosh did.

And he drives the lane and probably at least gets fouled…that is the MUCH higher percentage play. Now…if we call timeout…set up a play (which you and I both know we dont have) and that open 3 is the result of the play….I am more than fine with it whether he makes it or misses it. But to run to the 3-point line show absolutely no basketball IQ or game sense.

i agree in that

we’ve struggled in possession-to-possession situations since anderson was hired, which is where you have to excel in close games. The Illinois game last year was a perfect example. But today’s game, to me, showed progress. Anderson called a timeout, we got a good look and scored. Happened a couple of times in the final 10 minutes. But the players play, not the coaches. That frosh from Xavier made 10-of-10 down the stretch at the line. Does that automatically make Miller a good close-game coach? I mean, Coach K’s teams have lost close games in the tournament to lower-seeded teams for three or four years in a row. Yeah, I know he’s earned the benefit of the doubt, but you still don’t see anybody laying ANY blame at his feet.
Which brings me to my last point, something rpt says below. This is a brand-new team filled with brand-new players. Let’s give them some time before we write them (and Anderson) off as unable to win a close game.

by calim on Nov 21, 2008 2:44 AM CST up reply actions

Did not write the new players off at all...

simply pointing out the consistent area where Anderson is lacking and what ultimately might spell the reason for his dismissal.

Yes, I said a few “FIRE ANDERSON AND HIRE THE ST MARY’S COACH” comments (which came in the throes of anger…apologies all round to those of you who heard it), but it’s early. If this is just teething issues with the new kids, I’m willing to keep faith. If not…THEN you can break out the new coach talk.
