Thoughts
Video 1) I love watching that video, because there are some real haymakers thrown early on. I also love the fact that the band starts to play the National Anthem, and everyone genuinely expects that it will calm the crowd down. Oh, how this country has changed…
Video 2) Unconscious. And I like when they cut to Norm in the stands, and he’s got that grin like, “Yeah, you sonsabitches, he’s MINE.” Classic Norm.
Video 3) Check out old school John Saunders.
Video 4) Perhaps the greatest basketball game I’ve ever been to. It’s my brother’s only Mizzou basketball game, and, well, he saw a good one. Fraschilla said it best: “I’ve never heard an arena that loud in 25 years.” That is the epitome of the roof coming off a joint. It also made me sort of hate Mizzou Arena, with its curved roof. Hearnes is great because the roof is flat, so the noise just amplifies upon itself; Mizzou isn’t that way. Still, I love Christian Moody, now and forever.

Responses!
1) Yeah, there was no “Take a swipe, then hope a teammates swooping in to ‘hold you back’ before somebody can punch back” in there. Just venom, pure venom.
2) Every time one of our freshmen makes a 3 and immediately takes another one, I think my brain flashes back to this game. I’m not sure I’ve ever seen a more euphoric crowd (okay, 2003 Nebraska football game aside) than when Gilbert made the and-1 at the end of that string of 3’s.
3) Here’s how I know I’m getting old: I remember that ESPN set, and I long for its return.
4) It’s at least reassuring that Mizzou Arena can actually get that loud, though. We haven’t had too many opportunities to affirm that over the last few seasons.
(And yes, I too miss Hearnes.)

Gilbert
When I was putting the book together, the one photo I paid for out of my own pocket was the KC Star’s shot of Clarence burying that last shot even as Boschee shoved him with the left hand (page 255 of True Sons for those interested). That one HAD to be included.
I checked YouTube but couldn’t find the 1987 game at Hearnes where Lee Coward knocked in a three at the buzzer to wn. Pure delirium.
The great thing about the roar as Moody was shooting free throws is that some people had already left a couple of minutes earlier, assuming it was over. I bet a few folks slapped their heads when they picked up the paper the next morning.

Don’t know how to post a link, so I hope you can just cut and past it. But that was a great moment. I remember listening to Kevin Harlan call that game and that shot on my way back from junior high basketball practice.

Devin Rolf
That was a strange sequence with Devin Rolf shooting the free throw. Mike Sandbothe was supposed to go to the line, but he had to leave the game with leg cramps. Norm brought in Rolf, who hadn’t played at all in the game, and who didn’t play much all season. It seemed an odd choice, until you looked at the roster, which had very little depth. With Coward and Hardy on the floor, Rolf was the only other guard available. The other possible choices: Nate Buntin, Gary Leonard, Bradd Sutton, Kurt Brockman and Mike Potthoff. Not the best groupl of three throw shooters imaginable.
