The lead story in today's Missourian
There's been quite a bit of buzz around the J-School of the "Really???" variety today, questioning the newsworthiness of this feature Mizzou fans might find interesting.

I couldn't even finish that whole story
Why would Chase or his girlfriend agree to do that story? I know a few journalism students who agree with me. Just an odd story and an odd time for it.
Your 2008 Missouri Tigers! #14 7-2 (3-2). Next up K-State. Chase Coffman is a god.

I read it
and commented in the Friday links section (mainly how it’s not there). To amend my comments from earlier (she’s still hot), and in reading some of the comments from the article at the missourian, this is a pretty shameful use of time and resources. Knowing that this paper is swirling the drain at the moment, it begs the question if this is the last hurrah. If anything, and this would be more forceful if I wasn’t a scientist and was a member of the journalistic community…..FIRE THE EDITOR NOW!. I can only hope that El Presidente and the Curators catch wind of this.
Though, in honesty, it WAS written quite well…just not deserving of its place (this is a Sunday middle of the paper type of story).

I missed your comment...
… primarily because I was in a heated argument about it in one of my journalism classes. The Missourian is getting crucified today.

Ugh
Why would someone let that piece run in the Missourian? I knew they were hemorrhaging money, but not that desperate.
It's a funny name.

Maybe I'm too close to this
but I don’t understand the vitriol that this story’s spawned. I don’t really see any reason why it’s any different from these stories:
http://www.columbiamissourian.com/stories/2008/10/30/mizzou-masti-gets-ready-17th-india-nite/
I mean, it’s a profile. The Missourian does profiles on people all the time. Hell, we wrote a story about a guy who caught a really big fish. It didn’t garner anything near this amount of vitriol.
And it’s not like we’re not covering other news. We’ve got 145 reporters in the newsroom. A story on Chase’s girlfriend is hardly the end of journalism.
Disclosure: I work at the Missourian, but I’m not a newsroom editor.

Explain to me how Chase Daniel's girlfriend is at all newsworthy.
Does the fact that she is in some way affiliated with the team’s quarterback all of a sudden vault her into relativity? What has she accomplished that makes her newsworthy?
The first story you posted is about a community event, fulfilling the community informant purpose of the newspaper.
The second story you posted is about a social issue, and if you can’t see the difference between that and Chase’s girlfriend, I can’t help you.
The third story is a true human interest story because that woman is accomplishing something of both social and general interest to the community.
And the last one…wow, seriously, dude? She accomplished something, let’s just say that.
Look, I’m all for human interest stories, but this is absolutely crossing the line.

I think a fair bit of the vitriol...
… came from placement.
If that story appeared in Vox or was inside the Missourian, a lot fewer people would have had problems. It’s a problem of perception. People expect The Missourian – particularly the front page – to deliver relevant world and community news.
I don’t want to give off the impression of “the end of journalism” like a lot of commenters on the Missourian Web site have done, as I understand the value of the profile. But I think promoting this as the day’s major story leads a lot of people to question the paper’s news judgment, if for today only.
I should also disclose that I’m a current journalism student who will be spending time at the Missourian in the future.

This is a desperate attempt by The Missourian
To sell papers and drive readership to the site—which it did. But that doesn’t make it good journalism by any stretch of the imagination.

You know,
Sarah Palin has a degree in Sports Journalism, and she’s less busy today than she was a week ago…

I grew up in Central Missouri
which is how I’m a Mizzou fan, having never attended school there, in case you were wondering. I never realized how crappy the local media was (to include, but not limited to, the Missourian, Tribune, KOMU, KMIZ, KRCG) until I joined the Marines and got stationed in San Diego. Granted, it’s different types of news, but I can generally make it through the paper and local TV news without wanting to gouge my eyes out with a spork.
