Chase Coffman and Jeremy Maclin: Walter Camp All-Americans
I don't think this is old news. I'm watching the ESPN awards show, and they just unveiled the Walter Camp All-American team. Add another honor to the list for Cheat Code and the Flying Nunchuk.
UPDATE, 8:25 pm -- Chase Coffman: John Mackey Award Winner. That's so freaking awesome. Congrats, Chase.

That qualifies him for The Wall
Best football player I’ve ever seen at Mizzou. Maybe not as important as Brad or Chase D., but I’ve never seen another player play his position better than Chase Coffman.

Ditto.
I mean, all of the videos I just posted…I watched them all again from start to finish even though I’d seen them all 50 times. I agree—for the position he plays, he is/was the best I’ve ever seen.

Actually, I'm pretty sure you HAVE to win the Heisman
It was changed after Brock’s number was retired.

Actually...I think it was just recently changed...
I could be wrong, but I think Brock’s number had been up there for some time before they tweaked the rule further.

Here is the actual rule...
The current policy for all Missouri athletic teams that wear numbers reads as such: "A uniform number may be considered for retirement when a student-athlete has earned a bachelor’s degree from MU; is of unquestioned good character, reputation, and integrity; has represented the University well by displaying the highest degree of sportsmanship; last participated as a member of the MU sports team more than five years prior to the number retirement; and has achieved one of the following:
1. Wins the Heisman Trophy in the sport of football, or
2. Is elected as the National Player of the Year in the sport of men’s or women’s basketball, baseball, soccer, softball, or women’s volleyball."

And, I've seen an article from the Tribune
which I can’t find right now, that puts it in the context of being right after Brock was honored. Maybe that’s an incorrect interpretion, but that’s where I’m getting this from.

OK, so nevermind
Forget the wall. He’s still the best football player I’ve ever seen at Mizzou.

THRUST THAT NUNCHUCK UPWARD, BABY!
WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

Oh, and one giant…

This can only get better.
Dare I say…width=eleventy billion?

It's got eleventy billion-minus-one zeroes.
Heh. Surprised you didn’t know that.
Also, at this size, you can really see the fire in AK’s eyes.

From Dave Matter, Professional Newsman...
Football players can only have their numbers retired if they meet a few things…one of which is win the Heisman…so, no wall for anyone soon…
This is, in my opinion, a bullshit rule.
I'm the guy that keeps Mr. Death in his pocket.
The rule was changed after Brock
Brock’s qualification for having his number retired was winning the Mosi Tatupi (?) Award for the country’s best special teams player. A lot of people felt that it had gotten “too easy”, since there were more post-season awards than ever before – plus, quite a few people thought that Brock wasn’t worthy.
But, yes, I agree that the rule is BS. As mcboomofdoom says, it pretty much guarantees that only QBs and the rare (I realize NO ONE in MU’s history qualifies, so the use of “rare” is doubly true) RB would get it – or INCREDIBLY rare DB/KR.

yeah, but with college teams
being so large, I can see an issue with them running out of jersey numbers. Perhaps they should have a “ring of honor” or something similar instead of retiring more jerseys.
Maybe
we could do something special with the jersey—like what Michigan does with the #1 jersey.

When I was a kid . . .
it was exclusively a running back award. Billy Sims, Earl Campbell, Tony Dorsett, Charles White, Charles Rogers, Mike Rozier, Archie Griffin . . .

Reggie Bush has won it very recently
there have been others, but I do see the point as it pertains to our own rule

I know
but the way they only seem to be recognizing QBs right now leave little hope for other positions. You would have to break records and play for a national title contender (in the NC game at least) to even be considered if you were a WR or a TE. And the qualifications are atmospheric if you play defense. Also, the brownies are in the oven as we speak. (I dont have class tomorrow)

agreed...
I think most of here would agree that D Wash could content for a Heisman if the line comes together.
Still, such a rule is damn foolish. Collectively the Chases’ have done more for his program than anyone in the past 20 years. They deserve something more then a twinkle in our collective eyes.

That's it.
We’re creating a Rock M Nation Wall of Fame, chronicling the best Missouri players in our existence.
Coffman is obviously a shoo-in, but may I raise Pig Brown for a vote?

You know, rpt...
…I know you’ve got a man-crush but…and I hate to say this for fear of bringing out your rage…I wonder if you’re posthumously overrating Pig Brown.
I mean, yeah, he was a monster in the Illinois game, and he was great again against Texas Tech, but…at some point, you have to take into account the fact that he only started nine games for Mizzou. In those nine games, he had 77 tackles (8.5 per game), five pass breakups and three interceptions. Are those good numbers? Absolutely. Are the great numbers? Ehhhh, maybe. Are they transcendent numbers? No.
Coffman, on the other hand, has transcendent numbers. He’s the all-time leading receiver in Mizzou history (240 receptions), second on the Mizzou list of all-time leading receiving yardage (2,592 yards, behind only Gage), the all-time leading Mizzou scoring receiver (30 TDs, nine more than Maclin), and now he’s a Mackey Award winner.
I know Pig Brown is this inspirational leader, and I appreciate his contribution to the Mizzou program. He was the emotional leader on the greatest team Mizzou has ever assembled. But at some point, you have to separate the tangible from the intangible.
Off the field, Pig Brown was elite. On the field, he was very-good-not-great.
If you’re going to start claiming that he’s on the same level with Coffman (which, apparently, you are), I’m going to have to ask you to step outside.

No, I fully expected this response.
I’m the first to admit to my mancrush on Pig Brown. Warranted? Probably not. Do I care? Nope.
Perhaps the first thing we should establish is the process by which players would be selected for the RMN Wall of Excellence, since we can all agree the Mizzou wall may be a bit hard to crack…

Well, obviously, we need to start like any good voting system in sports.
Minimum one ridiculous snub per year.
I’m pretty sure that’s in the Downtown Athletic Club, Baseball Writers of America and every Hall of Fame charter.
"Please. What the hell do you know about starting a sports-related website and then deciding to leave it to work on other things and then? How dare you, sir." -- Michael Schur, aka FireJoeMorgan's Ken Tremendous, to Will Leitch
None established at this point
So I turn to the community:
What should be the standard for induction into the RMN Wall of Excellence? What kind of limit should we set on induction per year?
http://www.RockMNation.com
Home of "Thrust Nunchuk Upward"
Right.
I think we should honor a senior every year, I’m just not sure what the qualifications should be. Do Daniel’s numbers overcome Coffman’s testicular fortitude that overcomes Patton’s special place in Mizzou fans’ hearts, etc, etc.?

My idea.
-Athlete must be out of school (so Coffman, Daniel, Maclin would not be eligible this year).
-A five-person election committee chooses 10 candidates (with input from the community, of course).
-Elections on the same day every December (Christmas Eve?).
-Put up to a community vote, and every community member can vote for up to five candidates.
-Any candidate appearing on 75% of ballots gets elected.
-Any candidate appearing on less than 5% of ballots cannot appear on the ballot again.
-Election committee can save any player under 5% from falling off the ballot by a majority decision (three of the five), and can elect any player under 75% to the wall by an 80% majority (four of the five).
Basically, similar to the Baseball Hall of Fame idea. It makes it tough to get on the Wall.
"Please. What the hell do you know about starting a sports-related website and then deciding to leave it to work on other things and then? How dare you, sir." -- Michael Schur, aka FireJoeMorgan's Ken Tremendous, to Will Leitch
Actually...
…I didn’t take into account the “in RMN’s existence” thing. This would be a good idea if you wanted to do it for all-time Mizzou.
And to answer leghumping, no, I’d say you do it for every sport.
"Please. What the hell do you know about starting a sports-related website and then deciding to leave it to work on other things and then? How dare you, sir." -- Michael Schur, aka FireJoeMorgan's Ken Tremendous, to Will Leitch
Not that my vote counts....
but I don’t like the “in RMN’s existence” rule…because it eliminates alot of deserving players. But at the same time, it’s hard for any of us to judge the quality of players from way back in the day. Harry Ice held the single game rushing record of 249 yards from the late 40’s till Devin West broke it in 1998, but I don’t know anything else about Harry Ice. I’d just soon see the “wall” go back to 1980, so other people can be recognized, such as Doug Smith, Anthony Peeler and Corby Jones.
I definitely think having the elections on a day like
Christmas Eve would be a BAD idea, if we wanted people to actually vote.
I’m pretty sure Beef is about the only one planning on being here Christmas Eve this year – or, as he calls it: December 24th.

How about a RMN Power Pyramid?
the better/more important the player, the higher up on the pyramid.
That would be a pretty flippin sweet graphic – with a truman-headed sphynx.
just an idea
