Around SBN: More Televised Winter Baseball, Please

Like Christmas music, wool socks and static electricity...

...we can add another Winter tradition to the list: Mizzou tight ends getting screwed over by the Big 12 coaches.

That's right, the Coaches' All-Big 12 awards have been announced.

1st-Team Mizzou players

WR Jeremy Maclin
DL Ziggy Hood
LB Sean Weatherspoon
DB William Moore (unanimous)
PK Jeff Wolfert

2nd-Team Mizzou players

RB Derrick Washington
TE Chase Coffman
OL Kurtis Gregory
DL Stryker Sulak

Honorable Mention

QB Chase Daniel
WR Tommy Saunders
OL Tim Barnes
OL Colin Brown
DL Jaron Baston
LB Brock Christopher
DB Castine Bridges (?)
DB Justin Garrett (??)
KR/PR Jeremy Maclin

I realize it's hard to complain too much--a few years ago, it was amazing to see a handful of second-teamers in Mizzou uniforms, much less nine on the 1st- and 2nd-team--and I realize that Jermaine Gresham is by all means a helluva tight end, but...come on.  Not only is Chase Coffman the best tight end in the conference, he's the best tight end I've ever seen.

Then again, this tells you everything you need to know about the validity of these stupid exercises:

* Justin Garrett = honorable mention all-conference
* Carl Gettis = not

Good god, what a waste of time.  Sorry I even acknowledged this with a post.

It's slightly less ridiculous than last year

At least you can make a case for Gresham over Coffman (although I’m not going to do it). Pettigrew over Rucker last year was one of the most inane things I’ve even seen though.

The Gettis/Garrett conundrum is beyond ridiculous though. And I’m a little surprised that Willy Mo was unanimously selected. Was this a case of the Willy Mo “brand” being stronger than his actual resume?

by RPT on Dec 2, 2008 3:50 PM CST reply actions

What would that case be, exactly?

Coffman had 29 more catches (in two fewer games), and averaged 20 more yards per game. The only category that Gresham won was TDs, and barely (at least on a per-game basis). I know Gresham’s the better pro prospect and all, but…that’s a pretty flimsy case.

(That said, yes…Pettigrew > Rucker was a cruel joke.)

Quick question:

How often does Jermaine Gresham line up with his hand on the ground?

I do realize that the Pettigrew pick was probably worse, but…this one’s going to stick in my craw. What Coffman did this year (while managing not to drop about 35 passes, like his 1st-team counterpart) was worthy of 1st-team AA, much less 1st-team All-conference…we’ll see what other voters think…

I certainly agree on Coffman over Gresham

I just wanted to point out that I think the injustice of Gresham over Coffman is slightly more justified than Pettigrew over Rucker was.

yeah...forget it....he's rolling :-)

I only say that because he and I had the EXACT same conversation over email :-)

one difference.

Rptgwb has been far less patronizing in our conversation.

really...

stats (your wheel house) and his opening statement is pretty much verbatim what I said…but I get pegged as patronizing…not my fault you hate OU :-)

Again...

…I’m the one defending them in the BCS controversy! That gives me immunity to any argument…yup…

By the way

The Big 12 names an All-Conference fullback? Is it still legal to use a fullback in this conference?

I'm disappointed that there wasn't any love for Hot Tub

I mean, he only threw two picks the entire freaking season. But, then again, I guess getting worked up about this is about as useful as Justin Garrett in coverage.

That's...

honorable mention all-conference defensive back Justin Garrett, thank you very much…

The honorable mentions looked like a lisf of

“Hey, these are good players on this team” and Griffin was left out. I mean, yeah, there are 800 better QBs in the conference, but he still had a fine season with not a whole lot else around him.

Even better.

It’s clear that I did this in Microsoft word, considering the red squgglies under “haz.” My god, I’m on a roll right now.

Griffin got

Offensive Freshman of the Year.

The biggest snub besides Coffman is most definitely Gettis. Good defense from your corners means that their receivers are not getting the ball and thus they cannot make a play. Gettis was by far the best corner we had because his man rarely caught the ball.

Bridges might be an honorable mention just based on his performance in the Iowa State game.

If you can say the following without laughing

then you are a stronger person than me.

Big 12 coaches think Justin Garrett is better than Carl Gettis.

And my goodness, the tight end thing is just getting stupid now.

WTF???

I can’t read this post without the overwhelming desire to ram my fist through the wall. Coffman deserves better.
