Mizzou-Cal: Beside the Box Score
Because I'd much rather talk about this game than enter box scores from this weekend's football games (guess what the numbers say: Mizzou got drubbed last night. Shocking, I know.), let's dive right into this one...
| Mizzou | Cal | |
| Points Per Minute |
2.33 | 1.65 |
| Points Per Possession (PPP) |
1.29 | 1.03 |
| Points Per Shot (PPS) |
1.21 | 0.86 |
| 2-PT FG% | 55.8% | 33.3% |
| 3-PT FG% | 30.0% | 46.2% |
| FT% | 85.0% | 56.0% |
| Mizzou | Cal | |
| Assists | 22 | 7 |
| Steals | 14 | 7 |
| Turnovers | 17 | 20 |
| (Assists + Steals) / TO | 2.12 | 0.70 |
| Mizzou | Cal | |
| Expected Offensive Rebounds | 14 | 17 |
| Offensive Rebounds | 20 | 19 |
| Eq. Rebound Margin | +6 | +2 |
- Most of the Mizzou turnovers came from two players (Leo Lyons and Miguel Paul had 11), but in the end you're allowed a few more turnovers when you're producing that many assists and that many steals.
- Mizzou is still a bit deficient on the defensive glass, but they're making up for it with their aggression on the boards on offense.
- Clearly Mizzou is still taking too many 3's, but...apparently that's part of the aggressive mindset? I guess? I'd hate to say "Taker fewer 3's" if it neuters them or something...
- Safe to say, if Mizzou grabs more offensive rebounds than its opponents AND holds them to 33% on 2-pointers...yeah, they're going to win unless the opponent makes about 17 3-pointers...

EqPts = a take-off of the Net Equivalent Points idea discussed last week. Taking points, assists, rebounds (offensive & defensive), steals, blocks, turnovers and fouls into account, the team's points are re-distributed to figure out who had the biggest impact on the game itself, instead of just how many balls a player put through a basket. I can go into detail on the formula if anybody asks, but for now just know that that was the intent.
- I guess I'll hold off on giving JT the "Big Game" nickname...he was great in transition, and his 7 assists were great to see, but...I'll make him work for it a bit more first...preferably against Illinois.
- I loved seeing Kim English find his range today (it's great seeing his confidence grow), but he does need to get a little better at the "little things" stats...his 3's were the dagger today, but his 2 TO's and 5 fouls leave a bit to be desired. Still, though, he's going to continue to steal Matty Lawrence's minutes (even though Matt did well today despite not having his shot).
- I like what I see from Steve Moore's hands. I kind of want to see what he does against a real team's first string...though I kind of also don't want to see that just yet.
- Marcus Denmon is careless with the ball occasionally, but man...he has great feel with his shot (around the basket, mid-range, and from deep), and he's good for one straight-up pocket-pick a game.
- Jaureth Bamford (Justin Safford + Keith Ramsey + Laurence Bowers): 37 minutes, 8 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists, 4 blocks, 1 steal. Well-rounded as always.
- Knock on wood and all, but...I just can't believe how improved DeMarre Carroll has been so far. He was a bull in a china shop last year, and then he got hurt...now he's healthy AND comfortable in the system, and the results have been extraordinary.
- DeMarre's success is also taking pressure off of Leo...and making Leo's horrendous ball-handling today a lot easier to handle.
- Miguel Paul had a tough game today. All the freshmen will at some point, and at least Mr. Paul's came when the rest of the team was dominating.

| Michael Anderson Jr. | 0.68 | 0.14 | 1.2 PPG, 0.8 RPG, 1 coach's son |
- Due to Paul's setback, Zaire Taylor regained the lead in per-minute stats at the point guard position.
- J.T. Tiller leads in the "intangibles" category, but that obviously doesn't translate here. He still comes up big against the real teams, though...
- Jaureth Bamford: 30.5 MPG, 9.4 PPG, 8.1 RPG, 2.8 APG, 1.4 BPG, 1.3 SPG.
- And speaking of which...

| Michael Anderson Jr. | 1.34 | 0.27 | |
| Jarrett Sutton | 0.75 | 0.25 | |
| Steve Moore | 0.60 | 0.12 |
- Mizzou is holding its own on the glass...still not as good as I'd hope to see considering we're led by two big men (who are much better on the offensive glass than defensive...i.e. they don't block out well), but they're not getting dominated as we feared.
- Shooting 31% from the 3-point line = still shooting too damn many 3's. Oh well I guess.
- LOVE how Tiller just fills out the entire stat sheet...
- Jarrett Sutton: now under 1 point per minute. Clearly he's slumping...

Just an incredible game from Mizzou
SleepyFloyd and I were talking on press row during the second half about just how fun it was to be at Mizzou Arena this afternoon. It’s an exciting brand of basketball by a team who clearly loves playing the game (how long has it been since we’ve said that?). That attitude’s contagious.

100% agreed
There were a few really fun games last year (Purdue, K-State), but this one trumped them all because we played incredibly throughout most of the game. I can only imagine how much better these games will get once we can get 10,000+ at Mizzou Arena for conference play. This team is flat out fun to watch.
Oh, and the intro video is still the greatest thing I have ever seen.
AAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHH!

The intro video of excellence.
Someone really needs to film that video and put it on YouTube so everyone who hasn’t made it out to Mizzou Arena knows what we’re talking about.

I've kept an eye on him
I’m just trained not to ever put full faith in the Missouri athletic department.

The intro video
It’s a copy of what the Celtics did last year, and (coming from someone who had to live with a massive C’s fan last year) it’s a bit lacking.
Off-topic: in a sign that the censors are winning, the Antlers cannot say the word “poop” anymore.
It's a funny name.

Not sure why . . .
you think they took too many threes. 20 attempts in a game with that many possessions isn’t a lot (and one was Sutton’s last-minute heave), and most of them were good looks within the offense that just didn’t fall. The only ones I can recall cringing at a little were Matt’s. They try to get him going by running him off screens, and sometimes those shots look forced. Still, I thought he played some really good interior defense today.

Matt played well...
…but I thought a few of the 3’s in the first half came too soon—with the way DeMarre/Leo were playing, I was hoping we’d have tried harder to get it in to them first…20’s not a huge number, and a lot of the 3’s came late, but I still thought a handful were unnecessary ones…

If by "we are shooting too many threes"
You mean “Matt Lawrence (0-4) is shooting too many threes” then I completely agree.
He was able to pass and play a little D today though, which is a huge step up. If only we could get him to move off ball, dribble… oh, and make his open 3 point attempts he would be a good player.
Until then, he is still too big of a liability.
