Make Rock M Nation your base of operations this weekend and weigh in with your predictions, questions, worries, bold statements and observations by signing up for a free account. The Mizzou pitching staff has been untouchable during the team's recent 10-game winning streak, but the Tigers get a major test in their opening series of Big 12 play. If there's ever a time to start following Mizzou Baseball, the time is now. As our colleagues at Corn Nation stated about the BU/MU series, "If there's a better series in the nation this weekend, I don't know where that would be." UPDATE: Apparently Rivals agrees with Corn Nation...
Fight Tigers!

well played...
...I didn't even come close to thinking of this...

I figured...
A Mizzou squad ranked 4th in the country deserved some Live Thread love. I'm assuming there's a market out there for some baseball discussion (judging by the PM boards, at least). I'm hoping some of our readers can bring some baseball expertise to the table - that's right, Trripleplay and UribeAuction, I'm looking at you...
If Softball climbs into the Top 20 or so, I might start doubling them up.

Off to a good start...
I got the game streaming from snowy Chicago and we're up 4-0 in the top of the second. Crow hasn't been impressive, but he's pitched out of jams in these first two innings.
by UribeAuction on Mar 21, 2008 7:10 PM CDT 0 recs
5-0...
Senne with a solo homer to right to lead off the bottom of the third.
by UribeAuction on Mar 21, 2008 7:29 PM CDT 0 recs
surprised
at the early start by Missouri. Offense has been a problem for you guys..... but already five runs against the Bears.
by cornnnation on Mar 21, 2008 7:42 PM CDT 0 recs
Senne again...
2-run single in the bottom of the fourth. 7-0 Mizzou.
And this lineup seems completely different with Priday back in there.

with two outs
Aaron Senne drives in two runs, after Baylor got the pitch count up to 2-2.
7-0 Tigers. wow.
by cornnnation on Mar 21, 2008 7:58 PM CDT 0 recs
quite a statement here...
...Aaron Crow "isn't impressive" and shuts out a Top 15 team. Aaron Senne's a man.

Game two is under way...
Berger throws a scoreless first. Sounds like Cheese is throwing strikes.
by UribeAuction on Mar 22, 2008 2:11 PM CDT 0 recs
1-0 Mizzou...
Priday with an RBI single in the bottom of the first. Great start for the Mizzou offense--single, single, deep sac fly, single. Senne's up now–more updates coming.
by UribeAuction on Mar 22, 2008 2:21 PM CDT 0 recs
2-0 Mizzou...
Senne with opposite-field single. Seriously, this offense is completely different with Priday in there...

Cheese with a 1-2-3 inning. Still 2-0 Mizzou.

Mizzou scores again...
Kyle Mach reached on an error, was bunted to second by Lee Fischer, and Folgia delivered with an RBI single. 3-0 Mizzou in the bottom of the second.

I just cannot believe our pitching is like this..
I will certainly admit to being a pretty novice fan of college basebll on the national scene, but we really just seem to have the sickest trio going right now.

please keep these updates coming...
the gametracker is not really keeping pace for me right now...
By the way...Mizzou softball has taken care of it's weekend business, sweeping Okie State with a 3-0 win today. Delaney was dominant with a 1 hitter.

Will do...
I got the game streaming while watching West Virginia beat Duke (hopefully).
We got two on in the third, but Trevor Coleman hit into a double play.

Scoreless top of the 4th
Cheese strikes out two more, now has five on the game. He's locating his fastball well and changing speeds on his curveball. If he can keep that up, Baylor doesn't stand a chance.
by UribeAuction on Mar 22, 2008 3:01 PM CDT 0 recs
To the top of the fifth, still 3-0
Got Gray to second on a single and a bunt, but Folgia couldn't bring him in.
by UribeAuction on Mar 22, 2008 3:07 PM CDT 0 recs
And a NCAA update...
West Virginia leading Duke 55-46 with 5:40 left. Let's go Mountaineers!
by UribeAuction on Mar 22, 2008 3:08 PM CDT 0 recs
Bears go down 1-2-3 again...
Cheese with his sixth strikeout of the game. Mach made a nice barehand play on a bunt as well.
3-0 to the bottom of the 5th.

Gametracker finally caught up some
Wow...Berger just seems to be mowing them down effectively right now. Would love to see a little more offense to salt this one away...almost feel bad for our pen. At this rate, they dont seem too terribly likely to get some good weekend experience as the season moves along :-)

Amazing stat about Berger...
He's only walked FOUR batters this year.
by UribeAuction on Mar 22, 2008 3:20 PM CDT 0 recs
Statistically, you could almost argue
He is having a better season than Crow for how amazing that is. Should be right at 1K/inning and the ERA and amount of hits given up is just pretty sick right now.
Of course, he just walked someone too :-)

He's not as flashy as Crow...
But he gets the job done just as well, if not better (like you said).
When you lead a team in ERA that has guys like Crow and Gibson on it, you're a damn good pitcher.

I just dont see where Zagone will be able to get
his spot back considering how things are going right now. And if/when he gets back healthy, what a luxury to have a successful Saturday starter as your midweek guy and then your depth come all the tournaments.

Exactly
Zagone will get a lot of work in the mid-week games and should give this team some incredible depth late in the year. You never can have too many good pitchers.

Tollison's settled in for Baylor...
Mizzou fails to score in the fifth. We're getting a few scattered base hits and walks, but Tollison is doing pretty well now.
Those first two innings likely could be the difference in this one the way Cheese is going.
by UribeAuction on Mar 22, 2008 3:23 PM CDT 0 recs
Baylor lays another egg...
Cheese overcame some control issues and threw another scoreless inning. He's now got 7 K's, too.
by UribeAuction on Mar 22, 2008 3:31 PM CDT 0 recs
hhhmmm...the LOB's are piling up for Mizzou
I'd like to see us drive in a few more runs, but luckily, it doesn't look like we'll need them.
by UribeAuction on Mar 22, 2008 3:37 PM CDT 0 recs
8 K's...
for Cheese after another scoreless inning.
And K-State looks lost against Wisconsin...

Having not been able to track the entire game....
where do we think Berger is on pitch count? Seems like he is going pretty deep in counts of late...might we actually see the bullpen today?
by The Beef on Mar 22, 2008 3:47 PM CDT 0 recs
Wouldn't surprise me if we saw some of the 'pen..
His pitch count hasn't been overly high, but it hasn't been low, either. If I had to guess, we'd see another inning of Berger before Scooter Hicks comes in, unless Aaron Senne can deliver with two men on right now...

This is absolutely insane...
...Kyle Gibson? The pressure's on you now. 16 innings, 4 hits, 0 runs, 18 K's for Mizzou's starters in this series.
by The Boy on Mar 22, 2008 4:10 PM CDT 0 recs
And here I thought our starters could not do
much better than they did against Indiana State, only to have them prove me wrong against Toledo. And there was no way I thought they could top that effort, especially against a top 15-20 team in Baylor...we appear to be two-thirds of the way there to me being proven wrong again.

2-3-4 in the lineup to finish it
I like that we got some hits against what is clearly a very strong team, but I am with you, the clutch hitting has not quite been there today. Would love to see this effort closed out....making quite the continued flash on the national scene.
by The Beef on Mar 22, 2008 4:11 PM CDT 0 recs

Been internet-less for the last day or so...
And come back to these results. That's absolutely insane. I knew the pitching trio was good, perhaps great. But I didn't know THIS good/great.
In the preview post on Corn Nation that I linked to, they'd mentioned Mizzou "Feasting on cupcakes." I had believed that to be true as well, but if the Tigers pull another win on Sunday like they have in Games 1 and 2, they'll make a HUGE statement both around the conference and around the nation.
by rptgwb on Mar 22, 2008 5:19 PM CDT 0 recs
Re: feasting on cupcakes
Yeah, we played home series against Indiana State and Toledo, but we did beat Cal and the fightin' Tony Gwynns earlier in the year. So our previous schedule hasn't been ALL cupcakes.

Amazing stat -
I was at the game yesterday and heard a Baylor fan say that heading into this weekend, in regular season Big12 play (over 12 years) Baylor has only been shut out twice.
Now 2 times in 2 days.
That was mindboggling to me.
See you out at Taylor (with a couple of blankets)!

Am coming in for the Okie State series...will likely be out there Friday night and Sunday afternoon...I know they moved the Saturday game to the late afternoon for TV, but put it up against the Final Four...oh well.

Gibson with 6 up-6 down, 3 K's through 2
picking up right where Tepesch, Berger and Crow left off. Would love to see Mizzou get up early to really demoralize Baylor and set up the sweep.

sweet jesus...

Baylor scores 2 in the 7th...
...but Mizzou loads the bases with 1 out in the bottom of the 7th. Dan Pietroburgo walks home a run, so it's 7-2, bases still loaded...

So much for that whole "lack of offense" thing.
I don't think you can open up conference play better than sweeping the No. 14 team in the nation, throwing two shutouts, and outscoring them 22-2.
These guys are good.
