Live Thread: Mizzou vs. #14 Long Beach State in NCAA Softball

After the Lindsey 8th innning walk-off to beat #3 seed Iowa 3-2, #2 seed Mizzou moves on to the winner's side of the double elimination bracket to take on #14 and #1 seed Long Beach, who also won in bonus baseball over #4 seed Creighton 2-1 last night.  A win means Mizzou's day is done and they need only win one game tomorrow to move to a Super Regional.  Senior Jen Bruck takes the mound against Long Beach's Brook Turner, who is a fantastic 27-4 with a 0.67 ERA, but who DID pitch yesterday.

Star-divide

Both teams are 3 up, 3 down in the first, with Mizzou now batting in the top of the 2nd.

Top 2nd update

Mizzou gets to the LB pitcher for a 1 out single, stolen base and walk, but a long fly out to left and ground out to first leaves the score at 0-0 through 1 and a half.

Through 2, LB up 1-0

a leadoff single, a SAC and another single plates a run, while a DP ends the inning.

LB appears to have a fantastic pitcher, but not a ton of offense...so I am going to assume they win with pitching and defense.  The Mizzou hitters will have to get to Tucker and cannot expect to wait until the 7th inning like yesterday to do so.

Renth goes YARD for 2-1 lead

Taylor reached third base on TWO errors (so much for the defense I guess) and after a fly out, Renth gets a 2 out HR to give Mizzou the lead 2-1.

Through 3 innings, Mizzou up 2-1

Bruck works through 1 out single and 2 out walk to retire the side.

by The Beef on May 17, 2008 12:41 PM CDT   0 recs

Through 3.5 innings, still 2-1

Mizzou squandered a leadoff single by Ubrun and had 1st and 3rd with 1 out after LB error (glad my jinx applies to both my school and others after I make statements), but a strike out and fly out leave it at 2-1.

Mizzou is getting to Tucker and LB's defense is not helping...but they still need to take advantage of these chances to stretch the lead out when they can.

I was an hour off....

...thought the game was starting at 1pm.  I rule.  But I'm here now!

Bruck gets through the 4th, still up 2-1

a leadoff walk and a 1 out single left runners on 2nd and 3rd with 2 outs, but a harmless ground out ends the threat...top of the order coming up for Mizzou in the 5th (though Taylor has been retired already)

by The Beef on May 17, 2008 1:02 PM CDT   0 recs

3-1 now...

...I'm going to see if I can beat you to this one...an RBI double by Renth makes it 3-1...they've taken her out for a pinch runner, which is odd to me since her spot in the lineup will probably come around one more time, but oh well I guess.

Back to back doubles by Silver and Renth

make it 3-1 in the 5th with 1 down and Bruck at bat

by The Beef on May 17, 2008 1:04 PM CDT   0 recs

Mizzou up 4-1 through 4.5

Have to love the lead that Bruck has to work with...if you are Mizzou you do everything to win this game to give you the rest of the day off.

by The Beef on May 17, 2008 1:13 PM CDT   0 recs

1st and 3rd for LB with 1 out, in comes Delaney

As I said...you do everything you can to win....Bruck with a gutty performance today.

And she slams the door with a K and ground out

LB's #3 and #4 hitters cannot get the job done...

Mizzou up 4-1 headed into 6th, and they have chased Tucker for a 13-11 2.44 ERA Pagano.

by The Beef on May 17, 2008 1:24 PM CDT   0 recs

Delaney through the 6th, still up 5-1

LB with a 2 out single, but they get nothing for it.  They will bring 9-1-2 to the plate in the 7th...Renth leads off for Mizzou in the top of the 7th.

I am out...The Boy will take you home...check your email The Boy...I left you something

by The Beef on May 17, 2008 1:38 PM CDT   0 recs

and we head to the bottom of the 7th...

...Mizzou still up 5-1.  Brianna Goad (.167), Jessica Beaver (.262), and Chelsey Carmody (Freshman...no idea) are due up.

And...Goad singles.  Not what I was hoping for.

by The Boy on May 17, 2008 1:45 PM CDT   0 recs

Two outs later...

...runner still on first, and we're one out away.

by The Boy on May 17, 2008 1:49 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

And their best hitter...

...hits a 2-run homerun on a 1-2 count, and it's now 5-3 Mizzou.  Huh.

by The Boy on May 17, 2008 1:51 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

We win!

Their cleanup hitter pops up to short (according to Gametracker, the ball was in the air for about 13 seconds) to end it.  Mizzou wins, 5-3!

Iowa and Creighton locked at 1-1 in the top 7th

Iowa is the home team, Creighton at the dish...both of the pitchers who pitched last night are pitching again today....cannot fathom the winner will throw their pitcher AGAIN...but I dont know how deep their staffs are (or are not).

by The Beef on May 17, 2008 3:55 PM CDT   0 recs

Extra softball again for Iowa and Creighton

both starting pitchers still in, head to the top of the 8th tied at 1-1

by The Beef on May 17, 2008 4:02 PM CDT   0 recs

Iowa takes it in walk-off fashion 2-1

2 out single with a runner on 2nd gives Iowa the home win, eliminates the spunky Creighton team and puts Iowa in the next game against Long Beach, which should probably start some time in the next hour...with Mizzou to face the winner at 1:00 p.m. tomorrow

by The Beef on May 17, 2008 4:20 PM CDT   0 recs

Both Iowa and LB trot out their aces...

Britany Weil, who has pitched now 15+ innings, and Brooke Turner, who went 8 last night and went 5 today....bodes well for Mizzou tomorrow...especially if the pattern of extra inning games can continue....for...oh...20 or so innnings :-)

by The Beef on May 17, 2008 5:15 PM CDT   0 recs

Iowa gets on the board early, 1-0 after 1 inning

They are the home team in the game....not sure how or why...would figure LB would have that as the higher seed, but whatever.

by The Beef on May 17, 2008 5:29 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Looks like it might be #3 seed Iowa

They reached Turner as well, and are up 5-2 with LB batting in the top of the 6th
