Note from Rock Chalk Talk

This has the makings to be a great baseball series.  I'll be at the games and posting updates afterwards at Rock Chalk Talk.

Aman Reaka has done his usual outstanding job previewing visiting prospects.  Link to the Missouri preview here.  Do his evaluations look right to you?

The weather here in Lawrence is a bit iffy for tomorrow, but the games on Friday and Sunday should go off without a hitch.  It is a bit cold and wet, the field will be sloppy.

Well...we have been terrible on Sundays...

so I think if you get one tonight/tomorrow, then 2 of 3 for you looks pretty likely.

Quick score check

Mizzou up 3-2 after two-run top of the fifth

Big K for Crow...

...rings up his 11th victim of the evening to squelch a 2-on, 2-out situation in the 7th.  Mizzou maintains a 4-2 lead heading into the 8th.  Hope Crow's got two more innings in him, as I would prefer to wrap this one up without getting the bullpen involved...

good news, bad news...

Good: Mizzou scored another run to go up 5-2.

Bad: Crow's done, and the bullpen (Tepesch, in this case) has put the first two runners on in the 8th.

sweet jesus...

...I get ready to make a "1-2-3 ninth inning?  That's a change" comment when we quickly got the first two outs in the bottom of the 9th...and then the next three guys reach base.  And with the bases loaded, Kyle Gibson (???) comes in and goes 3-1 on his batter...and then strikes him out swinging to end it.  Hoo boy.  Aaron Crow's 11-0, but it gets harder every week.

Mizzou baseball

Where the real games begin in the 8th inning.

Pretty sure I called this in an email to you

earlier...said that it might get back to last year with Crow, Zagone and Berger with Gibson in the pen....

A win is a win...

Regarding Gibson,

Since the weather is so iffy today, Saturday, I think Missouri was taking a gamble with Gibson.  Pitch him short on Friday, and then bring him back Sunday to start.

As there is a good chance there will be no baseball on Saturday it is a good calculated risk.  The worst thing that happens is the rotation is unsettled a bit by using Zargone on Saturday instead of Sunday.

It was a great game yesterday.  I posted a recap at RCT for those interested.  There were about 200 MU supporters at Hoglund last night.  Only one represted Mizzou poorly.  What is with that guy?  The big 40ish year-old guy.  Not trying to start smack here (seriously, I am not) but I wish someone from MU would talk to him about his behavior at games.

by James Quinn on May 10, 2008 9:49 AM CDT reply actions

are we talking about...

...Superfan?  The dude who talks to the players the whole game, good or bad?

by Bill C. on May 10, 2008 9:53 AM CDT up reply actions

I don't know if we are thinking of the same guy.

He is about 40? years old.  Pretty heavy.  The guy I am thinking about yells at the players quite a bit.  And yelling at the game is fine, but fans have to remember they are surronded by kids and the player's family members at these games.

I sat pretty far away from him this time so I heard him yelling and taunting but didn't hear what he was saying.  Two years ago when MU was in town I sat closer and he was offensive -  no,.. I mean offensive.  Crossing-the-Quentin-Tarantino-line offensive. I know there were plenty of fans at that game, fans of both teams, who were not at all happy about having to deal with it.

Anyway, it was a great game and there were quite a few Missouri fans there and all was good.  I'm looking forward to the rest of the series.  I only saw Gibson pitch to the one batter but I could see right away why he gets so much buzz.

by James Quinn on May 10, 2008 10:20 AM CDT up reply actions

no...superfan is many things...

but he is not offensive in his language...

by The Beef on May 10, 2008 4:03 PM CDT up reply actions

yeah, that's what I was thinking...

...probably not him.

So...90 minutes till first pitch, and while there's threatening weather around the area, the storms don't seem particularly deep, so...who knows, but they may be able to play after a delay or something...

by Bill C. on May 10, 2008 4:40 PM CDT up reply actions

It looks like they are going to start the game.

I wouldn't be surprised if they have to call it early and finish it tomorrow morning before the 1PM game.

We'll see.  I'll be there as long as they are playing ball.

by James Quinn on May 10, 2008 5:30 PM CDT up reply actions

according to mutigers...

...game's been delayed till roughly 7pm or so.  Meanwhile, Max Scherzer pitched six shutout innings for the D-Backs, and Keyon Dooling got a technical foul with a minute left against the Pistons.  Good with the bad.

by Bill C. on May 10, 2008 6:41 PM CDT reply actions

Saturday is a rain out.

The teams will play a double header on Sunday.  First pitch at noon.

by James Quinn on May 10, 2008 7:05 PM CDT up reply actions

Heading to the top of the fourth...

...in today's first game, it's 1-0 Mizzou on an RBI double from Andrew Thigpen.  Have been hoping to see Thigpen moved up a couple spots in the order lately (he's batting 8th today)--he's been quite strong for a while now (.415 OBP), but I assume he's been left low in the order simply because he's a true freshman and Jamieson doesn't want to throw too much pressure at him too soon.

Meanwhile, Zagone's breezed through 3 innings, with 2 hits and 2 K's...

by Bill C. on May 11, 2008 12:56 PM CDT reply actions

naturally...

...as soon as I mention that Zagone's cruising, he gives up 2 runs...

by Bill C. on May 11, 2008 1:15 PM CDT up reply actions

a Ryan Lolls single makes it 4-2...

...two on, one out, still top 6...we've chased their starter...

by Bill C. on May 11, 2008 1:49 PM CDT up reply actions

bummer...

...could have broken that inning wide open, but Senne flew out and Priday struck out.  On to the bottom of the 6th we go...4-2...

by Bill C. on May 11, 2008 1:53 PM CDT up reply actions

Could there be a worse scenario...

... than Mizzou having to play TWO games on Sunday?

by RPT on May 11, 2008 2:27 PM CDT reply actions

I thought the same thing...

...but didn't want to say it.  And then we lost another one in the bottom of the 9th.  Two more innings, two more runs for the bullpen...

by Bill C. on May 11, 2008 3:22 PM CDT up reply actions

Game two starts out decent...

...Senne with another solo shot, and Mizzou's up 1-0 after 1.  Hopefully Gibson can go the damn distance.

by Bill C. on May 11, 2008 4:20 PM CDT reply actions

Mizzou scores 3 in the 2nd...up 4-0...

...in a way, it was a disappointing 3-run inning...we loaded the bases with no outs and did manage to score three off of a single and 2 walks, but...when you're looking for clutch hitting and only score when the pitcher can't find the plate...well...oh well, I guess.  3 runs are 3 runs.

by Bill C. on May 11, 2008 4:37 PM CDT reply actions

5-0 now...

...as Trevor Coleman hits a solo shot in the 3rd.  It's funny how hard we swing the bats when the bases are empty...

by Bill C. on May 11, 2008 4:50 PM CDT up reply actions

Game over 12-1 in 7 innings

Gibson went the "distance" for the rubber match.
