8 Redshirts (likely) burned
According to Dave Matter, it appears the staff is looking at burning redshirts for the following players:
WR Jerrell Jackson
WR Gahn McGaffie
TE Andrew Jones
TE Michael Egnew
OL Dan Hoch
DE Jacquies Smith
LB Will Ebner
LS Beau Brinkley
We knew about Ebner and Brinkley, and we all but knew about Jones and Jackson. The others are at least a bit surprising. McGaffie has been doing well, it seems, but at some point you just aren't able to spread the ball around as much as you'd like. And when you add to that the fact that we'll be playing FOUR tight ends...sheesh. I guess the thought is, Coffman approximates Rucker's '07 production and the Egnew/Jones/Jon Gissinger trifecta approximates Coffman's '07 production? Maybe?
As for Smith...well...Brian Coulter still isn't healthy (it actually sounds like he's regressed), and I haven't heard Chris Earnhardt's name once all camp. It sounds like there was room for another backup DE in the mix, and Jacquies has drawn quite a few rave reviews.

I guess I just shrug my shoulders and say, "Whatever"
LOVE seeing Binkley earn one, since that could mean four years of one long-snapper (never a bad thing) and likely a scholarship for the young man sooner rather than later.
Am good with Ebner, especially to start providing depth for 2009 and 2010.
Am good with Hoch for the same reason, though I think GP talked about him so much (something he has not typically done) that he almost had to put him in there to make himself not look dumb :-)
Am OK with Smith…though it does lend some credibility to the burning of the RS on Crane last year at the same spot. Coaches ALWAYS say D-line is the toughest spot and building good depth there is important. I can now at least see a little better why GP rolled the dice on Crane (though it did not work out)
As for the other group, would be totally fine with one of two in each group (Jones OR Egner and Jackson OR McGaffie). At TE, especially since Gissinger has proven to be more servicable than some thought, why not put a year between Jones and Egnew. At WR, especially with the prospect of Alexander coming back as one of our top four WR’s, I just see the catches being reduced even more for one or both or these two (barring additional injury).
But…in most cases I cannot question the shirts that have been burned before (at least not many come to mind…guess that happens when you get to be good…you forget easier about the bad)

Knee jerk reactions:
Jackson: The sleeper continues to astound, apparently. I remember MizzouRobot being high on this kid back when no one had ever heard of him.
McGaffie: The player I was most excited to see will actually see the field this year. He reminds me of a Woody Dantzler-type, they’ve just saved him four years by moving him away from QB sooner rather than later.
Jones: Everyone saw this one coming
Egnew: Like you said, FOUR tight ends? Trust in Gary…
Hoch: See “Jones”
J. Smith: I was high on him coming out of South Oak Cliff because A) I’d heard of him before he ever cared about Mizzou, and B) he just looked a ball of raw ability. I think it’s just on the coaches’ shoulders to turn him from a great athlete to a great football player.
Ebner: Gachkar version 2.0 (now with all original ribs!)
Brinkley: Good for this kid. Long snapping (and the punting game as a whole) last year was an adventure…
