KU, expectations and LOLing.

Per the incomparable Deadspin (which, to quote EDSBS, is like crediting the water company for the glass of water you just drank), it's Kansas' college football preview.

It's written by Ryan Patton of Kansas Football--It's Business Time, which would be a great blog if it weren't run by Al-Qaeda.

Keeping with the "know thy enemies" mantra, it's definitely worth a read, but I'll pull out some, shall we say, interesting portions:

Yet in just his [Mangino's] sixth season he managed to notch a BCS victory. Kansas now has exactly the same amount of BCS wins as: Nebraska, Florida State, Tennessee and Michigan. They have now exceeded the number of BCS wins by Frank Beamer and his football sized goiter. They also have more than that booger munching team from the east (Methzouri, for the lay person), who has never seen a BCS game (or Final Four). But I digress.

He calls Mizzou "Methzouri" throughout the piece, despite the fact that many different sources have proven that factually inaccurate. Also, "booger munching" should be hyphenated. But I digress...

Offensively they have to replace their tackles (Collins and Rodriguez), their TE (Fine), a WR (Henry) and a RB (McAnderson). The latter two are very replaceable. I have my doubts for the others, but I’m under the impression that while the newbies may not be quite as good as their predecessors we shouldn’t expect a huge plummet either.

Really? "Very replaceable?" Last time I checked, McAnderson was the third-leading rusher in the conference last season. Interesting.

Oh, but here's the true bit of genius:

Almost Sure Wins (6): FIU, Louisiana Tech, Sam Houston St., @ Iowa State, Colorado, KSU
Almost Sure Losses (1): @ Oklahoma
Almost Sure Toss-ups (5): @ South Florida, Texas Tech, @ Nebraska, Texas, Methzouri (@ Arrowhead)

A reminder that Kansas beat Colorado 19-14 last season, and Kansas figures to be worse while Colorado figures to be better. Calling it an "almost sure win" is absurd.

I don't have a problem with calling South Florida a "toss-up," but to call Texas Tech (which would have been the second-best team they played last season), Texas (which would have been the second-best team they played last season) and Mizzou (to which Kansas lost in a game that was much more decisive than the score indicates) "toss-ups" is one of the most asinine things I've ever read.

All aboard the ROFLcopter.

Anyways, worth a read.

South Florida a toss up?

South Florida is returning (1) a very experienced and multi-talented quarterback; (2) much of a very stout defense, which includes sack-machine George Selvie going against a RSFr LT for kU; (3) is coached by Bad Ass MU grad Jim Leavitt; and gets kU on a Friday night in front of a national TV audience.

I know my reputation as a kU hater is well-established, but I’m more confident in a kU loss in this game than I am a Mizzou win over Nevada that same weekend (have I mentioned that I’m scared to death of Colin Kaeppernick of the Pack?)

Well...

KU is returning (1) a very experienced quarterback: (2) much of a very stout defense, which includes the big 12 top rated linebacking corps by multiple publications; (3) Is coached by bad ass, velour jump suit wearing, Youngstown State grad Mark Mangino; and sports two new cornerbacks against a potent spread offense.

Should be a good game and no doubt a tough one but I feel good about it…

That is, to me...

…simply giving Kansas the benefit of the doubt. Look, I’m the first person to try to crap on KU, but I’m not going to suspend reality to do it.

I think that of all the games on their schedule, it is the purest toss-up. If it were in Lawrence, the edge would go to Kansas. But right now, i have to think that South Florida will be a very slight favorite. Regardless, I can’t see the odds on this game stretching beyond, say, 4 points in either direction.

You obviously haven't accepted...

…the true power of Beyond the Box Score.

Nick Graziano (the initial starter)

Run: 50.0% / 0.33 / 0.828
Pass: 39.4% / 0.47 / 0.861
TOTAL: 44.8% / 0.40 / 0.844

Colin Kaepernick

Run: 48.7% / 0.36 / 0.844
Pass: 40.6% / 0.47 / 0.876
TOTAL: 45.6 / 0.40 / 0.856

So the offense was better with Kaepernick in there, but not significantly. I think this both puts a slight damper on Kaepernick’s abilities…

Case closed. Or something.

As much as I love BTBS

Football isn’t played on spreadsheets, unless you can find a way to quantify “number of plays pulled out of his ass,” where Kaepernick demolishes Graziani

I did watch...

…with my own eyes…last year’s New Mexico Bowl. I’m not losing sleep over Colin Kaepernick.

ROFL, indeed.

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: Kansas is at least a three-loss team, maybe a 4-5 loss team this year. With OU, Texas, Texas Tech, Mizzou and South Florida on the docket, including three of them either away or at a neutral site, I don’t think anyone can justify how they’re winning any more than two of those games.

South Florida

Will win by 4 touchdowns. They were really good at the beginning of last year, and they will be even better at the beginning of this one. But this year they might stick and not self-destruct. But yeah, South Florida will dominate this game.
