Week 2 BlogPoll Ballot

This week's futile attempt at ranking the 25 best teams in America, once again, open for debate and change:

RankTeamDelta
1 Southern Cal --
2 Oklahoma 1
3 Georgia 1
4 Florida --
5 Missouri --
6 Ohio State --
7 LSU --
8 Auburn 2
9 Texas 2
10 Wisconsin 2
11 Kansas 1
12 Texas Tech 1
13 Alabama 3
14 Penn State 6
15 South Florida 1
16 Oregon 10
17 Arizona State 2
18 Wake Forest 1
19 East Carolina 7
20 West Virginia 11
21 Clemson 3
22 Illinois 3
23 UCLA 1
24 Utah 1
25 Brigham Young 4
Dropped Out: Tennessee (#23), Cincinnati (#24).
Just Missed Out: Tennessee, Cincy, Cal, Fresno State
  • USC remains at No. 1, no surprise there. But I made the move of OU to No. 2, something I'd been considering all offseason but didn't have the guts to pull the trigger on until now.
  • Ohio State remains at No. 6 by virtue of no one being able to pass them up. The win against Ohio was wholly unimpressive.
  • Wisconsin gets docked a small bit for the slow start against Marshall, but I just think Texas and Auburn are more complete teams at the moment.
  • Penn State gets a nice bump as I have completely underestimated its offense before this week.
  • I atone for snubbing Oregon last week by shooting the Ducks straight up into the Top 20.
  • East Carolina makes its debut at No. 19, with the fighting Skip Holtzes absolutely smothering free-falling No. 20 West Virginia. West Virginia joins the 20-21-22 rotation of talented teams with losses in the first two weeks.
  • I wanted so badly to drop BYU out of the Top 25, but they hang in there with the final spot. The additions of Oregon and ECU cost Tennessee and Cincy their spots.

I think Oregon may be a bit too high now...though

it is interesting to see the tier’ing going on in this.

1-7
8-14 or 15 (will know more after kU/USF)
16-19 (not quite there, but not quite too low)
20-25

Oregon...

…I think they’ve shown enough explosiveness to justify a mid-teens ranking. Hell, they’ve looked more impressive than USF or Texas Tech or maybe KU anyway…it’s early, and they’ve got a lot to prove, but I think they’re good enough to be where they are.

And yeah…the tiers are quite well-formed at the moment…

ECU is too low

Virginia Tech ain’t so grand, but I think W f V U is still a big win – especially considering the THROTTLING that it was. I think they’d beat Wake at Wake. I think they’ve also shown more than ASU (wins v. Northern Az. and Stanford, whose win over Oregon St is less impressive after PSU’s drubbing of them) and USF (although perhaps UCF will be tough). Alabama has got to be slightly too high. I’m not sold on them.

I agree on the tiers, but from 12 to 22 I think it’s more:
TTU
PSU
Oregon
Alabama
ECU
Az St
USF
Wake
Illinois (almost certainly better than WfVU and Clemson)
WfVU
Clemson

Man...

…has a 2-0 team ever been hated on as badly as Georgia? They’ve won both their games, and dropped a spot each time.

Final ballot

I’ve bumped East Carolina up to No. 17, moving ASU and Wake to 18 and 19, respectively. Everything else stands.

I love this site

Homer question: at what point does FSU get consideration for the top 25?

I don’t think they deserve to be ranked NOW, but as other teams lose and look bad, if the ’Noles drub UT-C this weekend, after throwing 69 on the board in week 2, people might stop and take note.

Also, ESPN grabbed the Wake @ FSU game in week 3 as their 7PM slot.

Beat Wake...

…and I think there’s no question you end up in the Top 25.

I'd agree with that...

I think FSU is in a nice slot because they are kinda coming out of the “perceived” pack due to all the issues they finished last season with. Not a bad place to sneak up on people from.
