I think I echo the sentiments of SleepyFloyd7, but I say
DUMBDUMBDUMBDUMBDUMB!!!!
Seriously, driving with your lights off is pretty hard these days. Granted, that’s a well lit intersection and if he’s coming from the south, area. But not paying a fine?!?! I said this elsewhere…Jason Simpson really blew his legacy at the school by pulling that trick.
I don’t know what it is here, but when I was in college in Illinois (but not at illinois), it was $500 for no insurance…add to that the fine and what have you for the bench warrant, and I think we may have seen the last of him.

Seriously?
I don’t expect Leo to miss a game. Suspending him is a complete overreaction on Andersons part IMO. If the arrest warrant was serious they would have picked him up after practice one day. All he will have to do is show a judge his insurance card which I guarentee he just forgot to put in his car, pay his other fine and go on with life.

I have to disagree...
If you are one of the Athena players who was suspended last year, then you need to keep your nose clean of EVERYTHING. There are two issues here. One is the no proof of insurance, but the other is failing to meet a deadline. Are both small? Sure. Would there be a reaction like this if it was someone else? Probably not. But, Leo needed to work harder to keep his nose cleaner since it was already dirtied, and he did not.

The insurance thing shouldn't be an issue
As long as he has insurance, he can prove that to a judge. I’ll agree that not paying the fine is something he should be held accountable for, but a public suspension seems a bit harsh. I think Anderson should have benched him at the start of the game and just said Leo was getting a slap on the wrist for not meeting a deadline. All this “suspension” has done is open Leo up to be ridiculed for a minor mistake.
As far as his involvement with the Athena thing, IIRC he was the first one allowed back to play, meaning he was just there, not really participating in the fight.
Leo has to be more careful because of his past issues, but embarassing a kid for a small mistake is just too harsh.

Interesting when I look to the related fanposts
I see something about Leo Lyons=captain?
Yeah…will be interesting to see how this plays into all the Pouty Leo we have seen of late. At some point, you just have to wonder if he is just not ever going to “get it” and realize all his potential

well
on a young team like this, you would expect the seniors to be captains.

Eh...I have no expectation based on year....
I was a bit surprised considering his actions in the past, but the article linked in that particular thread pointed to a “new” Leo….but given his recent disappearance and this, I am thinking/fearing this is not the case. Hell, I’d even take his captaincy from him at this point as something to send a message.

i agree
i wrote that fanpost based on the article about leo being changed and anderson putting a lot of faith in him. i have a feeling the overreaction of anderson is based on that faith being betrayed. i still think he will play against colorado though.
and in his defense all of those things he did wrong (lights not on, no insurance, unpaid fine) are things that every college student has done at one time.

Now I see the Tribune guy thinks Leo will be allowed back for the CU game
But might not start. That just makes the suspension seem pointless. Anderson clearly just wants to try and teach his players “life lessons” by embarassing them for something that happens to everyday people all the time. Sure any person should pay their traffic fines in a timely fashion and always have an insurance card with them, but stuff happens. Making an example out of somebody for this seems unfair IMO. Hopefully our guys avoid the police from now on, but you can’t suspend a player everytime he gets a speeding ticket or leaves his insurance card in his room.

I think the suspension has less to do with punishing him for the traffic violation
and more to do with message (to the new players) – DONT F&%K UP when you are away from the arena.
As far as benching my Lyons – Leo actually started playing last year after CMA sat him down. He seems like the kind of player that needs A LOT of motivation. Lord knows we’re going to need that dude to be more good than bad over the next couple of weeks.

In some ways each kid, each situation is different
So I’m right there with you SF7,
sometimes you have to swing the hammer hard enough for a kid to really feel it. That’s not about being punitive. It’s about getting the message across. In some instances the violation is not nearly as relevant as the (lack of) thinking and the (ir)responsibility behind the action. These are the kinds of little things that put your season—and the team’s season in peril.

I hope this works...
…though I’m a little concerned by the very poor Good-Leo-to-Bad-Leo ratio we’ve seen over the last few weeks…I’m not going to over-analyze something that really is pretty common (traffic violations and car carelessness by a college student…I think I still owe the City of Manhattan, KS, money for the parking ticket I got the day of the 66-0 game…as if the game itself wasn’t enough of a kick in the balls), but it does seem to fit the description of a guy who’s waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too laid back toward life. Dude’s getting a free ride through college to basically a) consistently try hard at basketball and b) not get arrested, even for silly, middling things, and he seems to be failing at both of those at the moment…
