and I will say that I think Schlafly has really brought up their game of late. I think their Oktoberfest is really tasty. I think their pumpkin is the 2nd best south of Flatbranch and they make an export IPA in the summer that is one of my five favorite beers.

dumb timeout by OSU...

…they were about to get a delay of game, so they called timeout…only, it would have only been about a 2-yard penalty and the difference between 3rd-and-33 and 3rd-and-35…should have just saved the timeout…

I didn't see this discussed on the game thread

So I’ll give it a shot here: What the hell were we doing going for it on fourth-and-20 the other night? We had had one play of longer than 20 yards all night. We should have tried the FG to cut it to 20-15, or alternatively tried to pin them deep. We had no chance of getting it, and there were still ~5 minutes left.

Sorry, but it’s still bothering me two days later. And yes, I realize it might not have made much difference.

Try not to take me too seriously

by calim on Oct 10, 2009 1:47 PM CDT reply actions

It was a 50-yard field goal...

…so the odds of missing it were pretty high, and if there’s a good chance you’ll miss the FG, why bother?

Rock M Nation
Thrust nunchuk upward!

by Bill C. on Oct 10, 2009 1:49 PM CDT up reply actions

Because there was a better chance you'd make a 49-yard FG than making it on fourth-and-20

And if you were willing to give up the field position anyway, why not try? Or why not punt? They had muffed 17 of them already.

Try not to take me too seriously

by calim on Oct 10, 2009 1:50 PM CDT up reply actions

They wouldn't have gone anywhere near the ball if we punted...

…let’s put it this way.

A 50-yarder on a wet turf with a new holder = we’ll say 35% chance of making it. 35% of 3 points = 1.05 points.

Converting on 4th-and-20 and going down to score a touchdown = maybe 10%. Could be less, who knows, but we’ll go with 10%. 10% of 7 points (we’d have gone for two, but go with me) = 0.7 points. The FG was a better bet, but with no guarantee that we’d get the ball back, it was probably worth the 0.35-point risk.

Rock M Nation
Thrust nunchuk upward!

by Bill C. on Oct 10, 2009 2:15 PM CDT up reply actions

You're right about the punt, but I disagree on two points

(1) we had much less than a 10-percent chance of converting that. Gabbert had NO time to throw all night.

(2) Those extra three points were extremely valuable, considering a stop and touchdown would have won it for us, not gotten us within a two-pointer, which certainly wasn’t a sure thing anyway.

And if you have 5:24 left and all three timeouts, you just have to assume you’ll get the ball back. If you don’t, then you’re assuming you simply can’t stop them.

part of me wants to see ranked teams lose in general…but I also keep thinking it will help Mizzou more if we’re able to beat them while highly ranked on the road.

And I know this doesn’t make any sense, but I keep thinking that if Okie State loses this game, it means the powers that be let Dez Bryant come back sooner.

Nub douchebags...

We have several very good Nebraska commenters (Engineer, Sammy Vegas, Bump all come to mind quickly). The rest were just pricks. I think one unusual handle from Nebraska had a reasonable response, but the rest were just idiotic.

Best part was they thought it was weak that I removed their 2:30a comments. Celebrating on an opponent’s site AFTER A WIN? Weak sauce. I decided to make their comments a separate post, and it makes them all look like just douchebags.

by bleigh82 on Oct 10, 2009 3:06 PM CDT up reply actions

hard to be impressed by what we did Thursday...

but keep in mind your expectations going into this season. While the loss is disappointing, it just proved that our redshirt sophomore QB can play like a redshirt sophmore QB sometimes. It also showed how piss-poor our offensive line is.

I may be completely off base here, but I would think that the loss of Dez Bryant would be equal to us losing Jeremy Maclin last year. The loss of Maclin certainly would hurt us, but it doesn’t take away the effectiveness of the other position players on the team. I think the loss of Bryant could add on 2 or 3 losses to their season.

…from looking at my Facebook feed the last few days (I’m from Nebraska originally): If Mizzou isn’t Nebraska’s rival, the people on my friends list are doing a really poor job of acting like it. I just saw one of those inspirational posters with Suh’s semi-dirty tackle that injured Gabbert with the title “Bitch.” Couldn’t read the text below it. And I can’t count the number of people who have posted the picture of the Mizzou player fighting back tears (one of them has it up as his profile pic).

It's amazing how shitty their fans are...

I get it. There are bad fans in every fanbase. Nebraska has the largest percentage of shitty fans. Yes, even worse than Oklahoma and kU.

I’d put Husker fans at 40-50% shitty. I’d say most fanbases are less than 10%. Oklahoma and kU maybe a little larger than that. It’s amazing how impossible it is to have a rational conversation with a Husker fan. Some are good to deal with, but man, a lot are horrible.

Yeah, ULL guy, you went there and they beat your team, who they have no prior connection with, 55-0. It’s pretty damn easy to be a good sport when that happens. Come back when Colorado, Missouri, or K-State is in town, and see how awesome they are then.

I would guess you’ll see around 10 total juco guys this year.

I picked Bowling Green to win the MAC East

Didn’t think they were a joke at all.

Sheehan has plenty of talent.

My goodness

I think I could gain 150 yards of total offense against K-state’s defense.

No, I didn't

I was still debating whether that throw by Cody Hawkins ranks as the single worst individual play I’ve ever seen in 13 years of watching college football.

I have to brag...

Me, Uribe and Boom walked in and turned on the TV to see Hawkins and CU in the red zone. The following is what transpired:

Boom: “Oh, hey, CU is in the redzone.”
RPT: “So then it’s time for a pick six. Who gets it?”
Boom: “Um, that guy that dropped the pick against Tech?”
RPT: “No, Earl Thomas is going to run back a pick on this play.”

BAM. INT by Thomas taken the distance. Cue RPT jumping up and down and acting like an idiot.
