The refs affected the game tonight

but it is a huge cop out if you put the loss squarely on them. The Tigers offense still has to make plays and they just did not do that in the 2nd half for whatever reason. I believe the play calling was insanely bad tonight, but the guys still have to go out there and execute and they did not.

the offense and special teams kind of sucked...the refs just made the game more frustrating

all that said, this team is due for some good fortune and play. i wouldn’t be surprised if they give texas a run for their money next week, but maybe i’m crazy.

Would it be wrong...

if we accept we “might” lose to Texas, give Costello reps and get Gabbert off that ankle? It’s sad to watch.

Well....

What’s done is done. We’ll likely lose to Texas, and then we can look forward to some unranked opponents we have a better chance against.

What if Mizzou, ku, and nu all go 5-3 and none of them are ranked in the final BCS standings?

After last year’s big hubub about the controversial tiebreaker a thought occurred to me today. What if there’s a 3-way tie but none of the teams are even in the final BCS rankings? It’s not totally out of the realm of possibility that an 8-4 nebraska and 9-3 Missouri and kansas teams aren’t in the top 25 at year’s end. Of course for 5-3 to happen for Mizzou it will most ultimately come at a loss next week and a victory over kansas. So with that in mind, who comes out on top?

If three or more teams are tied, steps 1 through 7 will be followed until a determination is made. If only two teams remain tied after any step, the winner of the game between the two tied teams shall be the representative.

   1. The records of the three teams will be compared against each other (1-1 for all 3)
   2. The records of the three teams will be compared within their division ( 4-1 for all 3, assuming ku loses to UT and OU while nu loses to OU)
   3. The records of the three teams will be compared against the next highest placed teams in their division in order of fi nish (4, 5 and 6) * (3-0 for all 3) *
   4. The records of the three teams will be compared against all common conference opponents; (none)
   5. The highest ranked team in the fi rst Bowl Championship Series Poll following the completion of Big 12 regular season conference play shall be the representative (as outlined above, none of these mediocre teams are ranked)
   6. The team with the best overall winning percentage [excluding exempted games] shall be the representative (8-4 nebraska is tossed aside here, envoking the phrase above If only two teams remain tied after any step, the winner of the game between the two tied teams shall be the representative. )

Boom.

Let chaos reign my friends.

Are you assuming we beat Texas

Because otherwise either Mizzou or Kansas have to have 4 losses if Kansas loses to OU and UT

by Transmogrified Tiger on Oct 18, 2009 12:14 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

you're right

For some reason I totally forgot kansas lost tonight.

We’re screwed IMO, unless nu lays another egg and we can win it outright at 5-3, because we aren’t going to win any tiebreakers unless it’s h2h with kansas.

by shaffe on Oct 18, 2009 12:18 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

fortunately

the Nebraska offense looks incredibly mediocre, meaning that Colorado/K-State/Baylor/Iowa State can hang around and maybe catch some breaks against them.

As for now, welcome to our current North overlords….Kansas State.

by Transmogrified Tiger on Oct 18, 2009 12:22 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

we just have to try and beat texas saturday

though it almost definately won’t happen, if we win all the other games and hope for ku and nu to slip up a few times, we can still win the north. But it will take some luck, something that seems to be hard to come by for mizzou these days.

If Ed Cunningham can figure out

that the DE can crash the zone read cause Gabbert is immobile, then something needs to be done. Why didn’t we fake a jet sweep and/or use two back sets more often to negate this? Very frustrating night to combine that with Gabbert being up and down throwing the ball as well.

However, for some perspective, the North isn’t out of reach. We can lose to Texas and still win out after that, Nebraska can lose to OU and KU, and KU can lose to all 3 south teams on their schedule.

Lackluster

Uninspiring, poor coaching, poor play calling.

OSU gave us opportunities. We beat ourselves. Even with the ref poor judgement calls, we could have still been in it if we had a freakin brain.

Costello can’t be that bad? WTF.

This Kennedy assassination documentary on History Channel...

…is fascinating.

O coach seat potentially warmable?

Steckel is getting it done on D (nobody is panicking on that side of the ball, they come set to play when things get tough, players are developing well), but if things continue as they are, might Yost be in some hot water?

I mean sure, it’s very early days and with a young team, so it’s not unheard of that they get rattled… but they also seem to have more curious woes – odd playcalling, the TE’s are straight up MIA, there are problems getting a running game going (at worst) or consistent (at best), red zones seem to stump them…. and we’ve seen them dicing with a very valuable ankle (though THAT probably isn’t Yost’s call).

Again, it’s all very early days, but I wonder if Pinkel’s legendary loyalty might not be tested if these sorts of things don’t start improving.

I think I can give insight as to why he said it that way.

When was the last time Pinkel fired an assistant at Mizzou.

Trick question. He hasn’t. He kept the same staff through FAR worse than this for eight years. That’s unheard of. The guy is loyal and he’s found that allowing a staff to work its way through problems has produced results. I doubt six or seven bad quarters are going to change that.

by RPT on Oct 18, 2009 1:20 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think Yost is doing fine...

…I very much disagreed with the empty backfield sets late today, but that’s just not a huge point of disagreement. Overall, Mizzou’s averaging a healthy amount of yardage considering their 7-8 new starters, and long-term I think he’ll be perfectly fine.

Plus...

…we were two dropped passes away from 360 first half passing yards today. We can’t just give credit to the players for the good stuff and kill the coaches for the bad stuff.

all good analysis, thanks

To be clear, I was in no way calling for anybodies head, just scanning for patterns in the data and speculatively extrapolating to infinity (because that’s neeever a bad idea, right)

And hey, most of the contrast between the consistency in the offense and the defense is that the D has performed way AHEAD of where we thought they should be.

No, I know.

But there’s going to be a BOATLOAD of people who are calling for heads, and this was a preemptive strike.

by RPT on Oct 18, 2009 1:28 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

For sure

Those these people seem to always focus on the head coach for some reason (I guess they just shoot at the first thing they see)..

It’s always like this. The Leafs are sucking now, and even on the smart boards the most common “solutions” offered are to send half the roster to the minors. There’s something about the sports fan psyche, that there’s no problem with one’s team that can’t be solved by subtracting the right people.

Ready to have your head asplode?

Actual comment on a Facebook status of mine, about how we should fire Gary Pinkel.

“big deal dude… the north was down, we won the north conference because nebraska and colorado sucked…. sorry man, but nothing the last 2 years impressed me…

today on nbc, they talked about charlie weis and how he doesn’t have a signature win… where’s pinkel’s? when is the last time we beat a team in the top-5 that wasn’t an overrated … Read Morekansas team? when did we last beat texas or ou?

sorry man, pinkel is slightly better than hawkins/zook and whatever schlub iowa state has now… he’s far worse than bo, fat manigino and any coach in the south half of the conference… i’ve hated him since day 1 and i hate him now, he hasn’t accomplished enough to earn immunity"

I'll admit

I was on the wagon when people were complaining about him not being able to make 2nd half adjustments back in 2003-2004, but he’s since proven that I was wrong. Frankly, they’re about where I thought they’d be this season—on their way to 7 or 8 wins.

by leghumpingjihadkiller on Oct 18, 2009 1:26 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yep.

There was a point where I could write a lot of columns about wanting to fire Pinkel (up to and including 2005). But one statement says it best:

Missouri’s 22 wins over the last two seasons trail only USC and Oklahoma, who won 23 games apiece
