Big 12 on Fox?
Now this isn't a leak from a source or a guarantee this will happen. But after reading the potential deal to expand NBC universal is a great idea, but I thought of an idea. Why doesn't the Big 12 sign a contract with Fox to have one gamer a week during the conference season broadcast on Fox
1. Fox won't be broadcasting the BCS bowls after this season
Beginning in 2010, ESPN owns the rights to broadcast the BCS Bowl. That means the Cotton Bowl is would become the only game broadcast on FOX. If FOX wants to be a leader in sports. It needs to get more college football games broacast and what better way to do that then to get the Big 12 game of the week.
2. What does Fox broadcast on saturday afternoons that would draw more than college football?
I checked Fox.com and found out that they do not even have national broacast on saturday afternoons. So its up to the channels themselves to show re-runs or movies on their networks. That obviously isn't a huge ratings draw. It would be a great investment for the Network to get the Oklahoma-Texas game and other big matchups in the Big 12.
3. It doesn't have to affect the Fox Baseball schedule.
If you only begin televising conference games for the Big 12, they do not start until October. Fox has exclusive rights to the ALCS and World Series. Most, if not all of these games are at night. Having an afternoon college football would not effect the World Series schedule. An afternoon game would begin at 3:30 ET and be over by 7PM ET. The World series doesn't begin until 7:30 ET or 8 ET.
This not only the smart thing to do financially for the Big 12 and FOX network, but its gets all conference games in the Big 12 broadcast (1 on Versus, 2 on FSN, 2 on ESPN, 1 on Fox). I think the Big 12 should look into this issue, because its what is best for the conference.
Tell us what you think. Poll closes at 12 Noon on Sunday.

The ABC contract doesn't expire for a while
unlike the FSN contract. We’re not selling TX-OU now, we’re the games that ABC does not pick up.
One big 12 game a week?
Should we just rebrand it the Texas and OU station?

Well this is how I see it
CBS only does the one game a week. It doesn’t have to be the best game of the week, it could just have 1 game a week. As it stands right now, 5 of the 6 conference games are televised. Thats really good but at the same time, it would help get more national exposure to other Big 12 programs. Does Texas really need national exposure when it gets the best talent in its state? No, but Missouri, Nebraska and other programs do need that exposure.

yes but does texas want that exposure? heck yes.
and they’re willing to pay more for it than we are.

Then the Big 12
Needs to play on a level field here. I know many people believe that Texas runs everything in the Big 12. Then they need to put a stipulation in there that limits how many times they are on fox (3 in a conference season) that should at least get the 8 schools needed to approve a measure (Missouri, Kansas State, Iowa State, Colorado, Oklahoma State, Texas Tech, Baylor, and Kansas).

Haha
well no arguments there… there are lots of things like that that COULD be done to increase parity – revenue sharing, equitable TV agreements, etc.
but
a) the TV agreement would make the contract worth less to fox. They might sell a million dollars of advertising showing a texas game (all number pulled out my behind), but sell only $200,000 of advertising for a Kansas game, and $2.95 for a Kansas State game…. so stipulating that only so many Texas games will be shown reduces what they would be willing to pay to cover those games… From a purely financial point of view, you might be best off letting them show all the higest ranked teams games, and just dividing up the $ to everyone. Which brings us to problem two:
b) Texas would have to agree to the new arrangement. Here’s how the conversation goes:
Big12North: Hey Texas, why don’t you evenly split all that money you get with the rest of us?
Texas: How about, um, no.
Big12North: Daaaaaarn yoooooouuuuu!

Texas:
how about I just shoot you from the top of a clocktower?

I like the idea of the games being rewatchable on Hulu
I think the Big 12 wants a more encompassing contract… something beyond the crazy mix of cable networks we have now.
Nice writeup.
