Around SBN: Dog Football! Which Breeds Are Best Suited For The Gridiron?

Ignoring the fact that trolling on an opponent's board is criminally stupid enough, doing it before the game is over is practically Darwin Award material.

For shame, unidentified sir.

Gotta admit

Takes some big ones to do that. Some pretty STUPID big ones, but big ones nonetheless.
Never understood going to an opposing board and talking trash. Now, friendly banter is one thing – we all have a sense of humor, and messing around in someone else’s backyard adds to the fun sometimes, granted.
But, dude, that was just downright idiotic. Anyone watching that game had to know that it was anyone’s ballgame (and the long suffering Mizzou fan in me kept feeling an air of inevitabilty, but I digress).
Guess SB Nation is gonna have to start handing out entrance exams…

I have to disagree...

It does not take cojones at all to go on an internet board and post something incendiary on the board of another team. There is an ethic to fandom, and many teams fans “get it”. Others, not so much. It’s the reason that one group of fans (Chiefs fans, say) hate another (Raiders fans, for instance). Chief fan believes that Raiders fan is permanently guilty of transgressions of this ethic.

This post is unfortunate on several levels. On the whole, I believe the bulk of MU fans are cut of a very classy cloth. Even in the wake of huge victories, any face-rubbing that may occur is usually in reaction to pre-taunting from another fan base. (Compare reactions from MU fans after the MU-kU game at MU last year vs. kU reactions after the reverse fixture at kU) Also, it is unfortunate for RMN because the powers that be and the frequent posters have built a well-deserved and well-respected reputation on SB Nation. Unfortunately, unless there are admin tools I don’t know about, we cannot conclusively rule out that it was a RMN poster (most likely a fringe poster)… which is even more disappointing.

Lastly, as mitch cumstein points out, there is the superstition part of the equation. Kenny Rogers said, “You never count your money/when you’re sittin’ at the table/there’ll be time enough for countin’/when the dealin’s done.” I am a very superstitious fan with regards to this principal in particular… I’m the guy that when my team has a sizable lead quiets the guy standing next to me when he says “it’s in the bag!” no matter how much time is on the clock. Truly, I guess there is no way that a statement or post or chatter can affect the outcome of a game… but I remember clearly members of the CMSU Marching Mules starting the “Overrated” chant when we were leading Pitt State by a large margin in the second half some number of years back… I felt at the time it was too early and tried to stop it (to no avail!) and guess who won. Granted this is a larger and more vocal example that can more directly affect the game… but it was a lesson, and we got what we deserved for not being classy. Even if you don’t believe in that idea, I believe that it’s part of the ethics of fandom to respect that for everyone else. Boo to that person in general. Boo to that person that they seemingly created that handle specifically to perpetrate that post (1 post and 1 comment, both on Corn Nation). Boo for folks that are not classy fans.

Whomever that is...

…ask them how “MU [got] their (sic) asses handed to them (sic)…”

Because if I recall…Mizzou was pretty much controlling the game for the first three quarters.

What do tigers dream of when they take a little tiger snooze? Do they dream of mauling zebras, or Halle Berry in her Catwoman suit?

Let's not also overlook ...

… the fact that this moron might have actually jinxed us into allowing the first TD. Not sure on the whole timing of it all. But it makes me feel better to say that.

By the way, I watched the game at a buddy’s house and pretty much kept my emotions in control (his two young daughters were sleeping through the second half, so I couldn’t yell out my usual assortment of Eff-bombs and, my personal favorite: “Eff you, you stupid mother effing ref”).

Anyway, we have a former co-worker that I haven’t seen in like five years and, a caveat, is basically the world’s nicest guy. He’s a Mizzou fan, but certainly not to the level of fanaticism that I take it to. This guy shows up in the second half, around the time Gachkar recovers the second fumble. As you know, pretty much nothing good happened from then on. To make matters worse, he wants to talk the whole time (catching up on the last five years), while I just want to sulk in my own sorrow/put an evil hex on the aforementioned mothereffing refs who refused to not call holding on every single one of our drives.

But my question to you, fellow Tiger fanatics, would it have been rude to ask my buddy to leave when things started to go sour for the Tigers? After all, his presence seems to me to be the only difference between a Tiger lead and a crushing five minute stretch of the fourth quarter.

(I ask this question 90 percent sarcastically and 10 percent seriously … I liken him showing at 9:45 for an 8:01 kickoff to that of one of your dumbass buddies coming up and interrupting a great blackjack run by hovering over you and chatting with the dealer and whatnot … there’s an etiquette to everything, including watching Mizzou sports with a crazed maniac like myself)

I am VERY selective...

…with who I’m able to watch Mizzou games with overall. I can never do it with casual fans or at a bar. It’s pretty much my wife (because she stays quiet, heh) and The Beef, because we share the same brain. It’s like Beefy said last night when the morons around us were…well, being REALLY moronic, “I don’t think I’m going to come to any more games. At home, I can control my surroundings.” He was (partially) joking obviously, but…yeah. I’m in my own head during games and really can’t take people around me not being on the same wavelength. You are not alone, Mr. Cumstein. Granted, you’re talking about jinxes and I’m talking about people’s reactions in general, but I think we’re pretty close to the same there.

I was about to post the same thing!

My wife is a Memphis Tiger alumni, so she enjoys watching Mizzou play football (because, honestly, it’s the only real college football she experiences). But I’ve extremely cautious about watching a game I care about (Cardinals, Rams, Mizzou) with someone else.
But in keeping with your jinx theme — yes, your “buddy” is completley at fault for this loss. To paraphrase Mercuito, “A plague on his house”.

To continue along those lines

I was just thinking about how I want to take my son with me to Columbia for a game day experience.

But I don’t know if I can watch the game in the stadium.

I’ve become too attuned to watching at home in my controlled environment where my superstitions can fly free.

And where I have replay thanks to the DVR.

It’s why I can’t do watch parties here in Vegas. I get too tense and nervous and worrysome during the football games.

DVR-God's Gift to Football

I went to watch the Titans game last Sunday at a co-workers house who was having a get together. Since I didn’t care about the team playing, and it was free food, why not?
Man, that was friggin’ brutal – guy didn’t have a DVR, I had to life through the commercials, I could not rewind for my own instant replay when I wanted. He planned on us staying for the Boys-Broncos came but I couldn’t take it.

You think I was even partially joking?

Let’s think about what we had to deal with around us last night…

1 person so drunk I was concerned for HER safety
1 husband of the person so drunk that he did not care about her safety
1 person so drunk he punched his own sister, and was lusting after another drunk girl who two BROTHERS were also lusting after

Nevermind the people you referenced….

That was one of the least enjoyable games I have ever been to, and very little had to do with either the weather or the outcome :-)

I believe you, Beef

I totally believe you.

Not saying that I would ever rule out going to a game, but it is certainly less enjoyable when surrounded by drunken asshats.

So you're just going to tailgate now and not go into the game? :-)

Actually…that might be a hell of an idea…

Yeah, the husband and wife in front of us were fascinating. They came in both HAMMERED…the wife turns to us when they arrive, exclaiming “We’re without our kids today!! WOOOOOO!!!”, then spends the next hour staring at the ground, trying not to puke (which she eventually did do)…and the husband looks down at her occasionally, laughs, slaps her HARD on the back in a “What a lightweight!” manner…he FINALLY decided she might not need to be there and took her away near halftime…then came back for the second half. So…what…he left her in the car or something?

Tailgate without attending

I do that for Titans games. I dont’ care for the Titans, but all my friends are Titans fans, and the tailgate experience is a blast. We end up staying in the lot and listening to the game on the radio. You are right there so you basically interact the same time the crowd does, so you kind of get the feel of being there – without PSLs or drunk baby mama’s free on bail.

I was keeping up with the game thread over there, and must have not been paying close enough attention.
