The UM system budgeted out $2,265,000 as "campus support" for athletics in 2009. The total revenues of the UM system in 2009 were projected to be $1,747,983,434. That "campus support" for athletics that RABBLE RABBLE RABBLE TRIBUNE COMMENTER ATHLETICS TAKE MONEY AWAY FROM ACADEMICS RABBLE RABBLE RABBLE was 0.001296 percent of the UM system's total revenue, unless I misread the data.
From research I'm doing for my sociology of sport paper that's going to strongly argue against Earl Smith's "I hate college athletics" argument in Race, Sport, and the American Dream.

That percenatage is rediculous!!
What about the professors? Wont some one think of the non-athlete student?
That is very interesting.

Quoted from Smith's book:
“Neither Hawaii or Texas at El Paso, because they are in mid-major conferences, will ever be eligible to compete in a BCS bowl or for the national championship. So, I ask, how can they justify these exorbitant expenditures?”
I love it when uniformed people write about topics they’re not qualified to write about. This book was published in 2007. In early January of 2008, Hawaii played in a BCS bowl.
Also, he has numerous misspellings across the book, such as “Marcus Vik,” “Rickie Clemmons,” and “Sandy Alomour, Jr.”
I honestly feel bad for supporting this hack with my money.

Devils advocate: Ok so it happened ONCE. Cross out “never” and insert “staggeringly unlikely, verging on never.”

What about Utah WINNING two of them?
Or Boise taking one?

The point is he was still wrong.
Had he said “unlikely to be in a BCS bowl” I would have accepted it.
He also said there are “many” instances of rape and sexual assault on recruiting trips while only mentioning Colorado. I couldn’t find these “many” instances anywhere.

question
Hasn’t Alden said they A. Dept. is going to stop getting those funds, and all funds, from the general campus budget soon?

I believe you did misread your data. 2,265,000 divided by 1,747,983,434 is .001296, which is actually .1296%.
