Around SBN: NHL Trade Rumors: Do You Make A Move For Rick Nash?

Mangino's temper is legendary. Just ask any high school football official in the Lawrence area or any KU Parking employee. He wasn't hired to be a nice guy; he was hired to make Jayhawk football competitive. And he has more than most any other Kansas coach save one.

It is possible, after all, that Mangino is pure as the driven snow. Maybe he never laid a hand on or shouted a cross word to anyone. He may be gentle as a lamb and help little old ladies across Mass Street. These players could be making it all up. Maybe they're guys with various axes to grind.

Or maybe not.

Either way, the toothpaste is out of the tube, and there's no putting it back. Being involved in a situation like this is a lot like being named in a paternity suit: whether the baby is yours or not, you're guilty.

When you've lost Phog.net, you've lost the heart of Jayhawk country...the writing was on the wall before, now it's REALLY on the wall...

Does this mean that the whole "Mangino is a great coach" meme

might finally be put to rest?

Well, if you ask me...

…Mangino IS a great coach. Whether he’s a great person is a whole different issue.

What do tigers dream of when they take a little tiger snooze? Do they dream of mauling zebras, or Halle Berry in her Catwoman suit?

Maybe I'm missing something

and I don’t think I am blinded by my side in the MU/KU rivalry, but I don’t really see the “greatness” in MM.

Perhaps it’s because of my distance from the midwest, and because I spend most of my time lately following Pac-10, WAC and MWC happenings, but does one great season because of a soft-ish schedule equate to greatness?

I’m just not feeling it.

"Great" is relative

For Kansas, winning seasons is still “Great”

by MULuke on Nov 19, 2009 1:46 PM CST up reply actions

there is some validity to this point...

I know you are saying this as a dig at KU, or at least I assume you are…but based on how bad things have been Mangino did do a lot as a coach to turn KU into a competitive program.

As ghtd36 says it’s pretty clear he might be a pretty ugly person on the practice field, but you can’t argue with his results. Are they great, not in the grand scheme of things…but they made Kansas matter more than they have in a long time.

"Great"

For Missouri, having a better season than kansas is “Good” and better than nebraska is “Great”

by MULuke on Nov 19, 2009 2:11 PM CST up reply actions

it's definitely different for every program...

I was going to ask over on RCT...

but outside of you and about 3 or 4 others, the rest would probably start a flame war with this Tiger. What are you hearing about HCMM job at this point? The rumor was he would be fired today. I’m at the airport in San Diego, so I don’t know if that’s happened yet or not. I know there is some riff between HCMM and ADLP…is he waiting on after the Mizzou game to fire him or would a KU win vs. MU an d a bowl bid make it too hard to fire him?

by CPC on Nov 19, 2009 3:11 PM CST up reply actions

as of 4pm

nothing on ESPN that’s new. RCT doesn’t say, but a there a great post by DJhawk on philosophy. Anytime you can quote Patton, you’re doing good…

I honestly believe...

this has gotten to out of hand for a move not to be made…sounds like it could be as soon as the morning.

One thing too that I’m hearing is this isn’t entirely Lew Perkins decision here. Lew’s ability to keep things quiet is well documented and not always looked at as a good thing.

Not sure that would have changed in this instance or not. What I’m getting at is I think this may have come from top administration at the University. Not certain but that’s what I’m hearing as to why this thing was timed so poorly.

what's the opinion of the faculty?

I know it’s a stretch, but does the faculty senate have a beef, and the power to do something like this?

Formerly known as Mizzou Grad

by Ausgiano on Nov 19, 2009 4:35 PM CST up reply actions

Faculty Senate won't have any power

I don’t think that the head coaches at a school like KU are considered faculty.

At most, a faculty senate could censure him if he taught a class or two, but they usually have no authority in a case like this.

At least, not on a campus at a state school.

At a private school, they might have more authority, depending on how the position is classified.

Maybe perkins went to the top to ask for help or guidance, opinions?

Seeing as he should have clearly recognized this as a PR nightmare.

by kusucks on Nov 19, 2009 5:20 PM CST up reply actions

no it looks like it may have been...

the top going to Lew and saying this(the investigation) needs to be handled now, not at the end of the season.

From there it was going to get leaked, the rumors were around for a couple of weeks. I think he then decided to issue his statement that they were investigating conduct and hasn’t spoken since.

I absolutely think he's a GOOD coach...

…but unless you’re prepared to call Pinkel a great coach, then Mangino is not a great coach either. The cupboard was just as bare here as it was there, and Pinkel’s finished tied with or ahead of Mangino every single year. Few of us call Pinkel a great coach…so…

Good

Since he got there, I thought he did a good job taking his team to their potential or at least close to their potential. That’s good. This year, I think he’s taken a team that had the potential to win the North and made them the worst team in the North. Yes, worse than Colorado. That’s BAD!!!

by MULuke on Nov 19, 2009 2:06 PM CST up reply actions

Maybe that's my larger point

I think that the appellations of “great” or “genius” are thrown around too quickly.

They should be reserved for actual greatness. which is still intangible, I know, but I think a higher level of sustained success would qualify for greatness instead of just simply being good.

With that being said, I still think he might be toast.

I’d call Pinkel a great coach.

Anyone who can take Mizzou to a number 1 ranking has to have some talent.

Mangino seems like a Funsucker

When you’re winning, you’ll put up with it. When you’re losing, it turns into a mutiny quick.

Funsucker – someone that sucks the fun out of everything. Queue touchdown celebration tirade.

by MULuke on Nov 19, 2009 2:19 PM CST reply actions

Don't know about the tirade

Regardless that is was a run back punt, or whatever it made the score, it was a stupid play. MM should have gotten into his grill. And should have verbally dressed him down. I would have done it. A personal move hurt the team.

Great reason to like the handshakes prior to this year (why did that stop?). Quick, “formal” congratulations, then get off the field.

If I'm not mistaken...

I saw a handshake after Alexander scored a touchdown on Saturday. You’re right, though…not nearly as prominent this year.

by cchstove on Nov 19, 2009 3:11 PM CST up reply actions

I think mangino is an ok to good coach, probably would be better if he had more

consistancy with assistants instead of running them off. I think that Pinkle is way better at recruiting,it’s gonna take another year or two to see if the change in both coordinators will make a difference for good or bad.

But I dont like kansas or mangino, yes it helps mizzou with them in chaos, but i would rather the good guys beat the crap out of them at the top of their game. And so all the people hoping mangino is gone, careful what you wish for you just might get it. Meaning if he is gone, they just might get a coach to take them over the hump, and that would’nt be too good for Mizzou.

by Bestofthewest on Nov 19, 2009 2:24 PM CST reply actions

I agree with that point...

But here is the flip side…What “good” football coach is going to take being second fiddle on their own campus to the basketball program?

There is a God and I'm not it, after that EVERYTHING is subjective. Be careful for what you wish for, you just might GET IT!

by mizzoufan1 on Nov 19, 2009 3:19 PM CST up reply actions

True and that might have something to do with the current goings on

but i keep hearing uncle fester will get behind the coach and give them whatever it takes to succeed,so who knows what that contract would be loaded with.

by Bestofthewest on Nov 19, 2009 3:32 PM CST up reply actions

winning less via those methods

makes him considerably inferior to GP IMO. I don’t think it is coincidence that MM lost more players, assistants, and was pitiful at stuff like APR. I also don’t think it is coincidence that KU has jerks like Talib out there as the face of the program, where we have Ziggy Hoods and JMacs. Gary gives a crap about the kids, not sure ManMountain ever did, or if he did, if it was in a ‘I beat my kids because I love ’em’ way. And call me Pollyanna-ish, but I do think GP recruits so well in part because he does genuinely care about more than wins, and it comes through in the recruiting process. I’ll take GP, even with a few less wins, over an asshat like MM or BoBo anyday. And I sort of wonder whether similar stuff may be happening at programs run by coaches who regularly demonstrate an inability to control themselves in public. Sort of wonder if some new policies are being written at some programs around the country seeing this fallout….

as far as I'm concerned

Gary Pinkel and mark rhoads (and maybe bill snyder) ok bill snyder are the only coaches in the big 12 north who are legitimately good people.

Anybody seeing these former player comments?

Joe Mortensen said Mangino told him he’d “send him back to the ghetto.” And another player said something about Mangino telling him he’d send him back to St. Louis to “get shot with his homies.”

If these are true, I can’t see how Mangino will keep his job.

said mangino made fun of a player b/c his father was an alcoholic. inexusible

if he keeps his job

he has some incriminating pics of Lew or something. No way he can recruit effectively after this. Wouldn’t be surprised if they do better, long run, though, dammit, minus MM.

all of the above are true...

there are many troubling stories and I’d agree Uribe I don’t see anyway Kansas doesn’t make a change at this point.

I assume it was hard enough for the blue whale to recruit already

I see the conversation going like this.
MM: you can trust your kid with me
parent: why?
MM: because I’m responsible
parent: responsible? you’re 500lbs!!!
MM: I have a thyroid problem.
parent: BS
MM: whatev, let your kid play football for me
parent: Maybe
MM: Damnit!!! COME ON!!!!!!!!
parent: OK fine Don’t eat me!!!!!!!!
MM: don’t worry I’m responsible remember.

him being morbidly obese coupled with him being a total dick probably equals him not being able to recruit at all. Thus rendering him useless for ku
