What makes me nervous about Border War '09
First, the caveat...
We don't suck. We have better top-to-bottom talent than KU, and that's even accounting for the fact that I do likes ahem... hates me some Darrell Stuckey. Bastard.
KU sucks. It's not like they have been playing possum the past 7 games, getting their asses handed to them just to lull MU into a false sense of security about their suckitude.
At least some of these kids have quit on Mangino and he's not getting them back for one game. For all the hand-wringing about how Mangino-gate never happens if he wins, the fact is Kansas is not only losing but looking bad doing it.
And yet, this game has me far more nervous than K-State did--even coming off the Baylor debacle. Why, you ask?
I really like this team this year. I refuse to label them a disappointment, because they are not. But heavens to Murgatroyd, they distract easily. If college teams could have official sponsors, this team's sponsor would be Ritalin. It's the same m.o. every game. They have a team poised for the kill shot. Then out of nowhere it's, "Ooooo... shiny!" They lose focus and struggle to get it back. Then, they pop a Danario Alexander pill to help restore focus.
It's not a matter of fire, desire, heart, want to, or insert your preferred cliche. It's really a matter of maturity. It improves with experience but it's a bumpy ride--not a smooth one. When we were 19 and 20 we couldn't concentrate for three hours straight without faltering either. We only think we could.
So, what worries me about Border War '09 has nothing to do with our talent or KU's talent. Rather, it is the question of when the distractable moment will occur and how long it lasts. Eleven games into the season and I still have no feel for it. I know it's coming but I don't know when or how long it will last. This week as much as any other there is so much to distract: new uniforms, a "better" bowl invitation, the final regular season game, playing at Arrowhead. And that's without even getting into the possibility that the Tigers may take for granted that KU has gone fishin'. (If you're Pinkel aren't you tempted to just use tape of last year's KU team?) I have a feel for what Pinkel will do this week. He will say all the right things to the press and to his kids. The leaders will say the right things to the press. But I have no feel whatsoever when our "Oooo... shiny!" moment will happen--and neither do you.
After all that, there is the fat man. Say what you will but he's no dummy. You know he will call on all the evil spirits that animate his lifeless corpse to take away Missouri's Ritalin pill--Danario Alexander. Coach or no coach though, nobody on that team is trying to go out losing seven straight games. The Beakers will be ready to play--or kill a lot of innocent people on the way into and out of Kansas City. Either way...

On the other hand
our only loss away from Faurot this year was in Stillwater with one-legged Gabbert. Our best performances throughout the year have come away from home(Illinois, Nevada, Colorado, K-State).

Interesting how some teams react that way
It certainly suggests that being on the road simply provides less opportunity for distraction. That’s the easy interpretation. I’m sure there’s more to it than just that, but I’m also pretty sure that the distraction piece is a big part of the home struggles.
Not to play negative Nellie here, because I have some faith that our guys will be ready, but this isn’t a true road game. It’s an annual rivalry game at a neutral site that is for all practical purposes around the corner. It’s not like getting ready to go to Ames or Lincoln.

Yeah, but is it so much different from the Arch rivalry?
And in that case we dominated a BCS conference geographic rival(who has been much worse than anticipated) from start to finish in a game in MO 2 hours from campus. Sounds comparable to me.

I'm not really worried about our performance...
…but I’d be SHOCKED if we didn’t get KU’s A+ game…I don’t spend a lot of time getting worried about a game this early in the week, but I have the feeling their seniors will be able to take advantage of our young players a handful of times…whether it’ll be enough to beat us, who knows, but I don’t expect anything less than a huge game from them.

I'll be expecting all manner of nonsense from the Beakers
One thing we didn’t spend a lot of time on in the Baylor loss was how they really switched up coverages and did a lot of LeBeau-style zone blitzes to confuse Gabbert (and the blocking schemes).
I’m not usually a “JUST RUN THE DAMN BALL!!!!” blowhards, but in a situation where teams are attacking your protection schemes, and willing to drop 8 you cannot let them control the run game with 3 guys. That was probably the biggest disappointment in our offense vs. BU. The coaches called runs against 3 man rushes, and we got nothing far too often.
I hope the coaches don’t abandon the run vs. KU.

What to expect from the Boarder War?
Anything and everything. This is why I am nervous about this game. Some players rise up above their mean other regress. Coaches throw in some plays that might be outside of their normal game progression because it’s THE rival.
Two years ago we saw powerful offenses struggle early, then a last possession grass baptism.
Last year we saw an incredible down to the last kick shoot out where both teams left too much time on the clock for the other.
I hope Mizzou ends up with the W, but if the last two years are any indication, this should be exciting, and nerve racking.

If Meier gets so much as 1 reception, I will be pissed
Okay, maybe that’s unrealistic. But what he did to us last year was criminal. And the worst part of it was, I was SCREAMING before the play even started that all they had to do was cover Meier. Reesing wasn’t even looking at anyone else anymore. Everyone in the stadium knew where the ball was going on a pivotal 4th down play in the 4th quarter… everyone, apparently, but our defensive coordinator. We called a weak-ass zone, he went through the seam, caught a TD pass, ran up into the stands, shoved a knife in my chest, twisted it, sang “My Humps” and did a salacious dance over me as I blacked out from blood loss.
We better have him triple covered every down. Maybe get a couple of nut shots on him when the refs aren’t looking.

I would like to see the secondary that shut down Tech in 07 again, rattle some heads!
highlights from Zoudaves’ video of that game is still some of my favorite hits.

Maybe we can have Ebner level him on a pass over the middle
That would slow him down.

I'm all for the nut shots...
…though tripling Meier might, uhh, leave Dez Briscoe relatively open.

I think the unis & Arrowhead
are probably the “Oh Shiny” moment – maybe they are getting it out of them NOW.

Rec'd
The Texas game and the OSU game were really the only games I think we deserved to lose. We’ve got the talent to be 9-2, but a letdown is a possibility. I don’t think it will happen, but we can’t let the chickenhawks feel like they can pull it out. If they can, bad juju…
