Not a negative in my opinion

I posted this on another Matter post.

I guess I’m in the minority here, but I don’t think it’s all that bad a deal. In fact, the only negative in my mind, is that we’re playing Navy rather than Minnesota or Michigan State as I think Navy has a slightly better chance of beating us than the Gophers or Spartans.

I understand that it might look bad now. And it does kind of suck that it seems as though Mizzou will have been passed up three years in a row. There’s a simple solution to that. Mizzou needs to travel better. With the exception of the Cotton Bowl, Mizzou fans haven’t exactly blown out their ticket allotments. I think they’ve done OK, but not exceptional. All of the bowl eligible Big 12 teams will likely out-travel us. Travel better and we’ll get the pick of the litter (Full disclosure: The only Mizzou bowl I’ve travelled to was Independence in 2003).

But here’s why I think the Texas Bowl could actually be a positive:

1) The game will be on ESPN instead of NFL Network. More eyes on you. Not debatable, definitely a point for Texas Bowl.

2) It is a definite advantage playing that game in Texas. Mizzou can have every Houston area coach come by practice or at the least they can go by and visit each and every coach while they’re in the area. Face time is important (not sure on the rules about having recruits come by practice). Mizzou doesn’t really recruit Arizona so face time in AZ isn’t as important.

3) The Houston Chronicle and/or Houston TV stations are going to do about 7 stories on Houston/Texas kids playing for Mizzou. Think The Chron would do a story about Jerrell Jackson becoming the next Maclin or ’Nario if the game were in Tempe? Not likely.

4) It really doesn’t matter what bowl you play in, only that you’re playing in one (unless it’s a BCS or New Year’s Day bowl). Five years from now, no one will remember what bowl it was, only that Mizzou won and got to 9 wins in a “rebuilding” year.

Mitch, Mitch, Mitch

You make solid points, and I can’t argue with them, honestly. Other than it’s bullsh** for the Big 12 to keep disrespecting the Tigers like this. Year in, year out, they keep feeding us the green weenie.

I'm not blaming the Big 12 so much

Under our current rules, Big 12-affiliated bowls can pick pretty much whomever they want. Until/if the B12 changes that, it doesn’t make a lot of sense for the conference office to try and slot teams into particular places — you’re just going to end up pissing everyone off.

whoops...

…completely missed that you had posted this. Just posted the same thing above.

Here’s the deal: I don’t really mind the thought of the Texas Bowl—it’s on ESPN, it’s in a good recruiting ground, etc. But this would be third straight year that we got snubbed for a bigger bowl than we seemed “entitled” to get. As Gabe put it at PowerMizzou, other conferences better dictate who goes where, and the Big 12 hasn’t even remotely tried to stick up for us on this one, so why wouldn’t we consider jumping if the Big Ten ever decided to expand to 12 and asked us to join? Not throwing a major fit about this as, like mitch said above, there are plenty of benefits to ending up in the Texas Bowl. But it would still be, on its face, a screwjob…which happens to us this time every year.

Or...

what Gabe just said (he elaborates on his earlier point).

[Y]ou know what? I get being passed over for Nebraska. It’s Nebraska. They’d draw 60,000 to an intrasquad scrimmage in a snowstorm played in a cornfield in Grand Island. So there’s at least some justification for that.

But Iowa State? Forgive me, Cyclone fans, but Iowa Freaking State? Are you serious? Let’s take a look at some numbers:

For an 8-4 team in what was supposed to be a rebuilding year, Missouri drew an average of 64,120 fans to six home games. For a .500 team under a new coach in a year that greatly exceeded expectations, Iowa State drew an average of 46,242 to Jack Trice Stadium. Hell, Iowa State could have sold out every single home game, and still drawn an average of 9,120 fewer fans per game than the Tigers.

(I link to this because I was going to look up the attendance figures, and he did it for me, and then some.)

the result is ok

but the process is garbage

i’m all for the big 10 if they ever invite us to their party

by Wooderson on Dec 2, 2009 5:42 PM CST up reply actions

that's exactly the frustration

It’s not even a “well you deserved Bowl A but because this other team with a worse record should travel better, you’re going to bowl B”. It’s that PLUS "well we’re thinking of dropping you to Bowl C so we can put a school there over you that defies any and all explanation. Deservedly, we should be looking at Holiday/Alamo and we were already forced to lower our sights to Insight with hope of the Sun. It’s a bit of a slap to the face to get kicked to the Texas Bowl.

by Transmogrified Tiger on Dec 2, 2009 7:28 PM CST up reply actions

ughhhhhhhhhh.

It’s not that disappointing but damn, we are better than iowa state right now.
/ on the plus side, we will probably draw waaaay more fans to houston rather than we would phoenix. now I might actually get to go.

On the plus PLUS side

I’d actually be able to watch the game, vs. only being able to listen to Coach and Mike. Although, maybe that IS a negative, with the quality of announcers the Texas Bowl would get.

I’m just sick of having to justify why a “lesser” bowl is advantageous to us.

by Andy--01 on Dec 2, 2009 6:48 PM CST up reply actions

I have to admit I'm kinda pulling for the Texas Bowl

Houston is within driving distance of Dallas, Tempe isn;t.

by Tohoya on Dec 2, 2009 5:58 PM CST reply actions

It makes more sense from a recruiting point of view...

but I just feel like the Insight Bowl is more prestigious. I feel it would be more impressive to defeat a Big Ten 6-6 team, than defeat a Navy who lost to Temple at home. But maybe I’m just like a Ron Artest after halftime, and not making any sense.

by CEW on Dec 2, 2009 6:42 PM CST reply actions

This Navy squad also beat Notre Dame and nearly upset Ohio State.

They’re a much more worthy opponent than Michigan State, IMHO, the bowl is in a better location, it helps with our recruits, is in a more advantageous time slot and on a better television station.

I’m now thinking that we ought to be hoping that we get snubbed.

by Tohoya on Dec 2, 2009 6:48 PM CST up reply actions

but it's a shittier bowl.

/ whines more
on the plus side it’s better than anything the schools to our east and west are getting! ZING!!!

by pinkelposse on Dec 2, 2009 6:55 PM CST up reply actions

Well, "beat Notre Dame" isn't exactly proof of quality

see: Connecticut (6-5) (for the record, I believe that is a remarkable record, given what happened to them this year, but still….)
Michigan (5-7)

’08 Syracuse (3-9)

etc…

Michigan State

has the 102nd ranked pass defense in the nation…it would be fun to see Danario rack up 800 yards against Sparty.

BTW, don’t look up Mizzou’s rank…

by CEW on Dec 2, 2009 7:05 PM CST reply actions

in a game vs michy st.

or pass D wouldn’t matter, they have no QB or good recievers. but watching DA pwn them would be priceless. What is navy’s rank?

Navy's

is ranked 60th. If we played them, We’d have to settle for 400 yards from Danario. Sigh.

I get the whole deal

about the Texas Bowl being in a better location than the Insight Bowl and the tv coverage. But what about the players? They worked for that 8-4 record, and what’s the point if we’re just going to get the same bowl by going 6-6? The seniors will have watched bowls pass over Mizzou for teams that they beat head on three years in a row.

Also….the travel budget for the Texas Bowl is substantially lower than for the Insight Bowl. Alden himself said that it could be the difference between whether Mizzou can afford to bring the band.

Anyway, I agree with what Bill and Gabe said.

"I was a victim of a series of accidents, as are we all."

by sirensofsilence on Dec 3, 2009 10:25 AM CST reply actions

Is there really a ton of difference in the travel budget

when you consider that there’s considerably more alumni in the Houston area, and that Tempe is about twice the distance from Columbia as Houston?

by Transmogrified Tiger on Dec 3, 2009 10:54 AM CST up reply actions

Oops, must not have hit reply.

"I was a victim of a series of accidents, as are we all."

by sirensofsilence on Dec 3, 2009 11:41 AM CST up reply actions

I don't think the fact that there's more alumni in the Houston area

has anything to do with travel budget. MU estimates that it will receive $1,349,500 for travel expenses to the Insight Bowl, opposed to $877,100 for the Texas Bowl. Alden says the difference could mean that Mizzou can’t afford to bring its band or spirit squads to the Texas Bowl.

The result of playing in the Texas Bowl as opposed to the Insight Bowl isn’t all that disastrous, as many have pointed out. But it sucks a lot in principle.

FWIW

I’m glad you guys aren’t pissed at us Clones. Just like anyone else, we’re trying to position ourselves in the bowl process. I think our fans nearly unanimously realize you guys deserve the higher bowl placement, but it’s not something we’d turn down.

We’re more pissed about Dan Beebe, actually.
