I think the challenges we face as a league — and they do impact Missouri — are our television contract and our ability to have equal revenue distribution. I don’t think there’s any question that if we don’t get to that level at some point, we’re going to continue to find ourselves further and further behind the Big Ten, the SEC and probably the ACC, as well as behind Texas and Oklahoma, in particular, and maybe Nebraska in our league. Our hope would be that the league would continue to push harder in those areas, for a new television contract for more exposure and for equal revenue distribution.
Another thing that probably is frustrating a little bit for Missouri — and that’s not to disparage any other programs, because there are really fine academic institutions in our entire league, they all are — but academically our student-athletes have done a great job and they’ve really performed at a high level. I think that the perception of the league has to continue to grow because if that doesn’t happen, that doesn’t help Missouri. We’re somewhat of an outlier with how our kids are doing academically. The affiliation with a league that is perceived to be really strong academically is really important to our institution.

Alden's no fool
He knows that a little flirting can only be good for us
One thing is undeniable...
…Mizzou sees an opportunity to improve its lot in life, whether in the Big 12 or Big Ten, and they are being relatively verbally aggressive in making that happen. I think I like it too.

This may be one of those . . .

I like Mike Alden
And I think this may be the best summation yet of the advantages for Mizzou joining the Big 10/11/etc. The more I think about it, the more I’m inclined to say it’s a good move, regardless, just because of the academic benefits involved. I love the Big 8 rivalries, and I’m not sure what it does for our Texas recruiting, but we are talking about institutions that should fundamentally be about academics, and it’s hard to see this as not being a good move academically.
The big downside, as I see it, is that we’d be joining the Big 10 athletic conference, and that makes me gag a little. But, I guess, so do some things about the Big 12 athletic conference. So I’ll just keep my gagging to myself and hope something good comes of all this.

My thoughts exactly. If a move is unmistakably good for your University’s academics, certainly better for them than it would be bad for your athletics, you have to STRONGLY consider it.
I love Mizzou sports, but the University of Missouri is first and foremost an institution of higher learning, and it would be a disservice to the taxpayers of this state, not to mention the students, to turn down opportunities for significant academic improvement for the sake of a worry about football recruiting.
The only thing I'm worried about
is losing our recruiting base in Texas. That’s played a massive part in our resurrection in football (it could be that way with basketball, with Pressey and Mitchell coming in).

Thing I wonder about is
Is how much of Texas gets the Big Ten Network.

Another Gem... Plain as day
Do you think league officials could be more assertive about supporting their schools?
A: Yes.

All of these people talking about academics
is incredibly exciting to me.
This just in: Mangino fired along with 75% of KU cafeteria staff.
And in the end...
…I’m satisfied.

What do tigers dream of when they take a little tiger snooze? Do they dream of mauling zebras, or Halle Berry in her Catwoman suit?
think the bowl snubbings
are still a major, if not the major, concern. I think Alden and co. are looking forward to the next few years in FB, where we may very well find ourselves again in a position where we clearly deserve an BCS game, but will have to hope some flaky committee decides we are economically ‘worthy’ in comparison to some less winning team. If we get the shaft again on a BCS bowl, it will be start to be an undeserved negative hanging around the program- a growing perception that the program will forever be handicapped by conference issues that have nothing to do with on field results.
I disagree.
The fairness of the bowl draw would improve maybe 1% in the Big Ten. But the money would improve by 100+%.
