Thoughts regarding "The Fastest 40 Minutes"
Today, as I was driving to Springfield and back (as you would), I found myself with a preponderance of time and not much to think about in particular. I will admit to not knowing as much about football as I would like; the intricacies of a 3-4 over man blitz (or whatever such thing) are lost on me... so I found myself thinking about Tigers basketball.
I actually was launched into a direction of thought while listening to an interview with Frank Martin this afternoon, and the subsequent discussion about K-State's rebounding problems inevitably came to discussing MU's own rebounding problems. Miles and thoughts down the road, I had come up with two ideas... one useful, the other not. I'll just get to the more useful question:
1) CMA's "Fastest 40 Minutes" concept relies upon players understanding their particular roles within what the team is trying to do. Part of what DeMarre and Leo were expected to do was bang in the paint, rebound and provide inside out ball movement... Goose was the thee-point sniper... JT was the shut-down guard... Zaire was Mr. Coffee. Saffy and Keith and Party Starter all had roles different than what is being asked of them this year. . . Getting to the point, is this possibly a chink in the system style that will continue to be part of our team persona? If you are not expected to be a rebounder for a year, then you are going to be understandably rusty when you pick up that part of the responsibility for your new role. Maybe this is not an issue at all. I played basketball in Middle School intramurals... and not since.
If we hold this to be plausible:
A) We will continue to exhibit these types of early-season growing pains.
B) They will continue to be just that... growing pains that we will be able to grow out of.
I don't think that this is very far fetched... but if it is, let me know.

I can go along with your statements...
but that is because I don’t understand Basketball as much as most on here.
I would agree that there will be facets of basketball ‘skill’ that will be a bit lower when a new part of the team is plugged in. It will take time for new players to learn their roles.
I will also agree that this style of play requires just a bit of a different level of thought and a different kind of ball mentality that will take time to acquire the nuances of before things click.

I'll trade early-season growing pains...
for clean basketball in conference play. IIRC, only one of our conference losses last year was “bad” —Nebraska. The other three (K-State, kU, and A&M) it seemed like we just got blitzed by teams shooting a ridiculously high percentage in the first half or, you know, Allen Fieldhouse.
