Yeah, I suppose that was probably a good game to be at.
On the plus side, I did get to watch 24.

seriously...
…he got over there FAST…and though I still got vertigo from the camera movement, he did manage to stay relatively steady considering he was bolting…

Plus...
The difference in volume is nuts. There’s the explosion after Flow’s bucket, then the near dead stillness when Morningstar launches the pass, then the nervousness with Aldrich’s shot, then the eruption at the end.

I never thought it was possible
to feel a crowd through my computer. I turned my volume on my laptop up and felt the crowd!

My chair on press row was physically shaking and swaying
My editor was sitting next to me, and we were unable to communicate during louder moments last night. And we were somewhat sequestered – I can’t even imagine the noise on the floor.

I like the intro from the AP
Intimidated by its own fans early, Missouri (No. 19 ESPN/USA Today, No. 17 AP) settled down in time to knock off bitter border rival Kansas.

I totally missed that...
…that pretty much describes it. It was the atmosphere they always wanted, and it intimidated the crap out of them for a while…

I couldn't sit up in the auxilliary press seats they had for us
The writers behind us wanted us to sit, and the fans in front of us wanted to stand. Awful.
So I went down just outside the tunnel. I couldn’t hear myself think!
Immediately after the game, Cole Aldrich came striding off the court. I should have said “Nice Mask” but I just smiled at him.

Composure
I do not know how as fans, you can not ‘cheer in the pressbox’. I would break that cardinal rule for sure…….Especially last night.

That comment was directed towards you guys in the media
such as SleepyFloyd who are obviously rooting for one of the teams they cover.

I failed my one press row experience...
…a buddy of mine covered men’s basketball for the Missourian back in ‘99…he didn’t have a car…he told me if I drove him down to Stillwater, he’d get me a press pass. So of COURSE I took him up on that. Clarence Gilbert fouled Glendon Alexander for a 4-point play about 8 feet from me, and on the replay you could see a guy on press row raise his arms in a “WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA???” motion…that was me…I couldn’t help it.

I’m in the precarious position of the Mizzou fan forcing himself to be neutral. Couple this with the fact that I help operate a Missouri fan site, and it’s not the easiest task.
But a funny thing happens when you can’t cheer or get emotionally involved – you begin to appreciate the event itself rather than the result. Forget Mizzou’s win. Last night was a spectacle in and of itself.

I take the easy road out
I have never claimed (nor have I been asked) to be a Journalist. I am a fan who is lucky enough to talk about the teams on the radio. That might be semantics, but I’ll run with it until Mike Rivera strips it from my cold hands.
The benefits: I get to go to all the games, talk to the players and coaches, get “access.” The drawbacks: I can’t yell at the friggin’ Big 12 refs, I can’t do the 2nd part of “M-I-Z” at the KU game, I have to sit on my hands.
I sincerely hope no one expects me to be neutral. I wouldn’t be able to do this job if they did. Now, I try to look at things with objectivity, but let’s be honest, no fan can do that all the time. That’s probably why I live and die with the “results” as RPT calls them. It’s also why I was actively looking for the place on Bill Self’s head where the toupee begins.

I think that's the beauty of your gig.
Like I said in response to your five postgame thoughts in the Live Thread last night, your position represents the voice of the fan. And that’s a position and a leeway that everyone else on press row would understand, I assume.

I'll chime in.
It’s a matter of understanding your job. You’re there to report what happens; emotions simply cannot play a role in it.
But I will agree with rpt: you gain a greater appreciation for the event, the spectacle, the little things, when you don’t let yourself get emotionally caught up in it.

There are two tiers of awesomness in The Boy's story.
First he committed the cheering foul, and he jumped the second tier by having it show up on the replay.

What feels better than beating kU?
Seriously, I want to know.
"gotta get me a little oblivion, baby"
Actually...
I’d give up game 2 to them to beat OU. That would be a small measure of revenge for the past 2 Big 12 Championship games.

and as strange as this would be to say...
it would be a bigger win for us….
But I would happily take whichever of the two right now :-)

Sorry, but no way.
I would not give up a Kansas win for anything outside the tournament. Absolutely nothing. I don’t care if OU frickin’ ranked #1, I’d still rather beat KU at their place.

This week's task:
Find a way to make Stealth Cat an RMN staple, mascot and/or meme.
Perhaps the Mizzou basketball team sneaking up on the national scene = Stealth Cat?

You know...
We really do have a “Hammer vs Nail”-type rivalry with them as far as basketball goes, but I still expect us to win every game against them. As a child of the 80’s and 90’s, it seems like this series has been pretty even, certainly not enough domination by them to substantially increase their record against us. How lopsided was the series pre-Norm?
