Where to eat in Columbia?
Need help.
We are going to the K-State game next week. Arrival time in Columbia should be around 5:00 p.m. We have a parking pass, so we should be able to eat somewhere first and then go to the game.
Need suggestions on restaurants.
I am a Tiger fan by marriage. Went to the University of North Texas for undergrad and UMKC for grad school. Husband grew up a Missouri fan but actually went to Berkley. We had football season tickets during the Brad Smith era but would always tailgate rather than eat in Columbia.
Go Tigers!

After your trip to Starbucks...
…I recommend a true Columbia place…which means…
Flat Branch if you’re interested in microbrew and great food (burgers, pizza, the world’s best appetizers).
Booche’s if you’re interested in greasy burgers.
G&D’s if you’re interested in greasy thin-crust pizza and the world’s most interesting mix of family eatery and hot waitresses.
Shakespeare’s if you’re interested in thicker (and more expensive) pizza with outstanding toppings.
Harpo’s if you’re looking for a Mizzou bar experience.
I’m probably forgetting some…

I think Flat Branch
sounds like the ticket.
Beer.

agree with above
If you want a selection of beers, there’s an Old Chicago on I-70 Drive.
For the record, there’s 2 G&D’s (or there used to be). G&D’s Pizza and Steak on the corner of Broadway and Stadium Blvd. is where I always go, and what The Boy is talking about. G&D’s Steakhouse on Worley is just a regular steakhouse.
Actually...
…sadly, Old Chicago closed. The Business Loop is dying, and they took off before business started suffering too much.
And yeah…my parents used to hit the old, just-steak G&D by the Best Buy…I like the pizza & steak G&D.

G&D Steakhouse
My buddies and I went to the old G&D every Monday for about 2 years when I was in college. I was just talking to my parents about that place (they used to go there when dad was at Mizzou).
Well
The staple is Shakespeare’s downtown, but that’s on everyone’s radar. If you do go, expect an hour wait for your pizza (know from working there).
If you don’t mind going south, I’d hit up a place on Grindstone Pkwy, either Buckingham’s (on Buttonwood, behind Hu Hot and KFC), or Plush Pig, a newer place that is in the Wal-Mart Complex on Grindstone (same building at the ATT store). There’s a great Mexican Place (though the name escapes me) in the building East of the Pizza Hut (though not El Maugua, though that’s good too) or one behind Gerbe’s (Tequila).
Really, you can’t go wrong with anything around Grindstone.

I mean…The Boy gave you some other options…but it should be Flatbranch

If you're doing that
Try and call ahead…similar with Shake’s, lots of folks wanting to eat there pre-game.

My next question
Do they take reservations?
Their website appears to be devoid of any information.

I think the only bbq
I ate in Denton was at a place called Sonnys. I honestly don’t remember much about Denton – I drank a lot and barely graduated.
My love of bbq came later in life when I migrated back to Kansas City.

Respectfully Disagree w/ Flatbranch
If you’ve never eaten in Columbia before, I think you have to try either Booches or Shakespeare’s. I’d recommend Booches (best. burgers. ever.), but you can’t go wrong either way.
Flatbranch is fantastic, but it’s relatively new in town and doesn’t have that college-town charm, imho. If you do go there, be careful with the green chile beer. It tastes great in a four oz sample, not so great after a pint.
Also, long time, first time. Boy, you do OUTSTANDING work, one of my top three or four favorite writers.
Thanks for the suggestions.
I love beer which makes me think Flatbranch but I will take a heart-stopping burger anyday!

Welcome aboard, AW.
I think you go Booches or Shakespeares on name alone, but I think you go Flat Branch based on the best quality of food. It’s a matter of which experience you want.
Then again, I thought Booches was overrated. I know this brings me the wrath of 10,000 suns in MU circles, but I’m just gonna throw that out there…
I vote for censure!!!

Umm, Beef...
Do we need to recount the number of things you probably ought to have kept to yourself?
A few things RE: Flat Branch
It’s my favorite restaurant in Columbia (with G&D, aka HOW IS THIS STILL A SECRET TO PEOPLE?, a close second). And while it is relatively new, I think what it lacks in charm it makes up for in pure, unadulterated flavor.
The Chokes ‘N Cheese, for me, is probably the best thing on this earth. It’s good alone (in the bread bowl) or on the Flat Branch Burger. I imagine it would be good on sushi. Three-day-old sushi.
And the beer is just outstanding, especially considering their wide variety. Do yourself a favor and get the beer sampler (I can’t remember what they call it) where you get six 6oz. samplers (might be 4oz; been a while). Make sure you try the Katy Trail Pale Ale, Honey Wheat and the Oil Change Stout.
And as for rpt calling Booches overrated…well…I don’t know if it’s possible to be more wrong.
My 2009 New Years Resolution: Quit feeding the trolls.
It was a matter of misidentification
I was expecting a fat, juicy burger. I wasn’t expecting the old style Slider-esque burgers.
Don’t get me wrong, they were still some very fine burgers, just not quite what I was expecting and not quite living up to all the hype.
And on the Flat Branch front...
The Chokes ’N Cheese is a very, very solid option, although I lean the route of the Texas Burger. Thick bacon, sauteed onions and BBQ sauce? Win.
Plus, Flat Branch’s fries with the horseradish sauce are a most excellent appetizer.
+1 on the fries.
Must. Get back. To Columbia.
Must. Devour. Flat Branch.
My 2009 New Years Resolution: Quit feeding the trolls.
Another vote for Flat Branch
I remember them having a chicken fajita wrap with ranch salsa dipping sauce that was amazing. Of course, if you’re really going for the genuine Mizzoudining experience, you’ll have to stumble into El Rancho at 2:00 AM, get the pork soft tacos and queso with chips, scarf it all down then catch a Taxi Terry ride home, realize you’re still hungry and call up Gumby’s or Southside.

flatbranch is a good choice, but...
my favorite that no one mentioned is heidelberg. they used to have 2 for 1 apps and pretty good beer deals.
also used to enjoy bangkok gardens, buckingham’s and the sanwiches at quinton’s
mmm, bangkok pad thai and potstickers...mmm...
…you know, I don’t know if I’ve ever actually eaten at Quinton’s. I’ve been there quite a few times, but never eaten.

That's how I was with Harpo's.
Then, one weekend, my mom came into town and said she’d buy me lunch at Harpo’s. It was 1pm on a Friday. It was beyond bizarre.
My 2009 New Years Resolution: Quit feeding the trolls.
when i worked on campus we went to quinton's for lunch quite a bit
they had really good sandwiches and soup in a bread bowl. at least we could walk some of it off going back to the rec center.
does bangkok still have the dry erase board on the wall? i ate a number ‘10’ one time and got to write my name up there. it was worse than blazin wings at bww. the dude brought it out wearing a fireman’s helmet with a siren.
Don't think so
I don’t remember it being there the last time I was eating in.

yeah, pretty sure it's not there...
I max out at about 7-8 on the Pad Thai. I think they’ve changed their scale a bit too (it’s been a while)…the max is five, I think…just divide everything by two…
…(it’s also moved to Cherry Street, btw)…

Just wondering, anyone else appreciate Buckinghams BBQ?
I always thought it was an underestimated restaurant in Columbia. Sure, it can’t compare to the KC BBQ establishments, but I always thought it offered some very nice meals to be washed down with a cold pitcher of Boulevard.
Plus, the new place on Nifong is ten times better than the old one by the business loop.
i always liked it
it was on forum back when i lived there. there was also one in nixa of all places, when i lived there, and it was pretty good. i like the turkey sandwich with spicy sauce…mmm…
I'm a fan of El Rancho downtown
it’s more of a “let’s get Mexican at 1 AM” sort of place, but it’s very tasty.
Also, Wiseguys has great Chicago style pizza. It’s inside a bar called McNally’s on 6th street.

Mexican food in Columbia?
Give me a break. I’ve eaten at several “Mexican” restaurants, even one that had Mexicans working in it, and they looked at me like a retard when I asked for Carne Asada. I realize I’m spoiled because I live 20 minutes from Tijuana, but, damn.
to clarify
I’m trashing Columbia’s so-called Mexican restaurants. We (obviously) have great Mexican food here.
I like El Rancho
for when I’m constipated and need some epic diarrhea.
Flat Branch and G&W are a must, there’s also this smaller restaurant called D. Rowe’s off of Forum by Nifong that is pretty damn good if you’re hanging out south of Stadium.
Reading this thread before lunchtime:
One of the worst ideas I’ve ever had.
Chicago White Sox Examiner — Your what hurts?
Alternatively, you can approach the nearness factor by going to .
D Rowe’s south of town, then head to the game. Somewhat less traffic coming from the south to the Arena than on Stadium Blvd or from downtown.
ORder what you want, but be sure to get the waffle fries
their fries are great...
…though if you’re in that part of town, you should treat yourself to Hoss’s around the corner instead. Just epic food there. Everything’s fantastic. Meatloaf…crab cakes…chicken enchiladas…burgers…pot roast…

Oh
Another one…Jazz, A Louisiana Kitchen…all the food is great, esp. the hushpuppies. And they have PBR on tap.

The Tailgate Queen and I have enjoyed that place a few times....
I know it is still something of a chain (which she and I are very much against when we eat in Como), but it is still very good.

Addison’s (Diablo shrimp pasta) and CJ’s (THE BEST WINGS IN ALL THE LAND! but go there before the game, they’ll likely be out/closed by the time its over).
Jazz or Flat Branch also are highly recommended.
Yeesh. I miss the food in Columbia.

If I had a week in Columbia, I might be able to hit all my favorites
Booche’s
Shakes
Bambino’s
Flat Branch
Heidelberg
Murray’s
Jimmy’s
Sub Shop
McNally’s (their Dubliner is a great sandwich)
Addison’s
Bangkok Gardens
Course, I’d also gain 15 lbs that week

Ah, the 'berg...
I miss the old Heidelberg. That place just reeked of alcohol, which is probably why it burned so quickly. The new place is really nice tho.
"gotta get me a little oblivion, baby"
Don't forget that drive in
off of the Business Loop. I can’t ever remember the name of it, but they got some damn good food.
If you get into town early enough...
Ernie’s. Best cup of coffee in COMO.
"gotta get me a little oblivion, baby"
My favorites
Granted, I am a freshman this year, so experience is limited:
Cafe Berlin – amazing breakfast
Sake – good sushi (or at least the best you’re going to find around here)
And the aforementioned Jazz and Murry’s
they have the greatest steak sandwich ever

Don't listen to another post: Just go to...
…Shakespeare’s. Period. End of story. Don’t worry about the wait. Just have a beer or three while you wait. In five years from now, when someone asks you where you went, you’ll want to say Shakespeare’s. It’s been the Gold Standard in pizza in Columbia for over 20 years. Go. Go. Go. When you’re in town next, try Flat Branch or Booches. I’d probably do Booches on trip #2. But please, for the love of all that is holy, do not pass up Shakespeare’s. – TL
Thanks for the memories
What about Boone Tavern or Johnny’s Beanery?
I haven’t been back to Columbia since I graduated in 2003, but just reading all these posts brings back incredible memories. I’m surprised some of these places that opened when I was there are still around, (Addison’s, Sake, El Rancho, Flat Branch, McNally’s!) but I’m so glad to hear it.
Too bad about Old Chicago…I used to go there several times a week while working at Outback…free drinks and liberal carding helped me get into the Hall of Foam before I was 21.
And now there is a Jazz in Como? Incredible…after leaving town and moving to KC, I frequented Jazz after work…again with the free drinks…
Now that I’m in a world renowned culinary city (Las Vegas) I’m finding myself longing for some Shakespeare’s, El Maguay, or Bambino’s.
Sadly...the Beanery is closed (I believe)
I would miss El Maguey too…but I’d take Vegas over Como :-)
