BIG Monday: Kansas-Oklahoma Open Thread

Being that Mizzou is smack in the middle of the race for the conference title (I want to say that as many times as possible while it's still plausible), this is a big-time game...therefore it gets the big-time game treatment.

Who:  No. 15 Kansas Jayhawks (22-5, 11-1) vs No. 3 Oklahoma Sooners (25-2, 11-1)
Where: Lloyd Noble Center
(Capacity 11,528)
When:
8:00pm CST
TV: ESPN

YES! i was hoping for one of these!

btw, does anyone know if the OU game has been picked up by anyone for next wednesday? it’s listed as showing on the B12 network, but it seems like it would have to be picked up by somebody, doesn’t it?

not an option...

…they’ve got their programming booked a long time in advance. Looks like an NBA game on ESPN at 8pm and KU/Tech on The Deuce at 8:30 next Wednesday.

this is what i thought

but i thought maybe during the last week of the regular season, some flexing was possible, guess not. i bet the deuce is glad they get to show kU and tech instead of OU and mizzou.

They SHOULD have flexibility...

…but they very much do not. I kind of understand why they don’t in football (it’s a much bigger production), but I would think it would be a lot more doable to throw together a national telecast pretty quickly. But oh well, I guess.

Lot of basketball to be played between now and then.

Suggestions?

I have been to about four basketball games in my life. My fifth is Wednesday.

I am an expert football fan – I cheer my ass off at the games at all the right times. I take the “12th Person” role seriously. I am always up on 3rd down and will even pop up and cheer on a good 2 and long.

What does a good basketball fan do for their team? We are in the lower section right across from the Missouri bench. What can I do to help our team on Wednesday?

Cheers!

it'll be pretty easy...

…just stand when everybody else stands (which might or might not be the entire game depending on who’s got seats in front of you) and make noise when KSU has the ball.

and no talking for free throws but I want to know what would make it extra-special. For me to be a SUPER FAN. But now, they love me.

Thanks for the suggestions.

seriously

the one thing that annoys me at basketball games, are the chuckleheads to get up to get more beer during play. I’ve been to hundreds of hockey games, and they always advise you to remain at the top of the aisle until a stoppage in play, because a puck could fly out of the rink…even had stewards keeping people from going down at one arena. Maybe I’m a bit spoiled, but I think that’s just common courtesy. Also, if you get up to go and you get back during play, I don’t think it’s wrong to kneel down on the stairs waiting for a stoppage in play. People pay alot of money for those seats (my uncle sits about 10 rows up across from the visitors bench, so I know) and don’t want to have to deal with people getting up and down in front of them all game long.

by CPC on Feb 23, 2009 7:59 PM CST up reply actions

hmm...

…well, you could always yell something at a KSU player during a stoppage where everybody’s quiet.

On a somewhat related note, one of my favorite moments at Hearnes was during a Colorado game where it was the typical Big 12 second half—17 fouls in the first 4 minutes of the half or whatever. So Mizzou calls timeout and another whistle blows, only a friend of ours (MU 1839) wasn’t really paying attention and yells, “NOW WHAT???” when there was no other noise in the arena…perfect comic timing, intentional or not, and we enjoyed the rest of that sloggish game.

So there you go—either make fun of KSU or yell something really funny, and the crowd around you will love you.

(That’s a pretty high margin for error there, though.)

so if kU wins tonight

and mizzou wins sunday, who leads? what’s the tiebreaker in that situation?

by stlcardinalsfang on Feb 23, 2009 9:35 PM CST reply actions

assuming kU wins tonight...

they’ll be atop the big 12 at 12-1. Oklahoma would be next at 11-2, and we’d be third at 10-2.

So we’d be a game and a half behind kU, and half a game behind the sooners, but we’ll be able to close that gap because we play both teams.

Not sure how tiebreakers work though, anyone else have an idea how a two-team tie is broken if they’ve split head to head? Or a three-team tie?

by RoyalsFanInBillings on Feb 23, 2009 9:42 PM CST up reply actions

but if we win wednesday and sunday and OU takes care of business saturday

then that would be three teams at 11-2. who would techically be in the lead?

also, if this would happen, next wednesday’s game would basically be for the conference. how Fn sweet would that be?

by stlcardinalsfang on Feb 23, 2009 9:44 PM CST up reply actions

This is the official text:

(a) If two teams are tied and they are from different divisions, the winner of the game between the two tied teams shall be the higher seed.
(b) If two teams are tied and they are from the same division, the team with an advantage in head-to-head competition shall be the higher seed.
© If two teams remain tied, there will be a comparison of overall record against division teams only (10 divisional games).
(d) If two teams remain tied, there will be a comparison of record against the highest ranked team(s) (based upon Conference winning percentage) in the division and proceeding through in order of divisional record.
(e) If two teams remain tied, there will be a *comparison of record against the highest ranked team(s) (based upon Conference winning percentage) in the opposite division and proceeding through in order of divisional record.
(f) If two teams remain tied, the higher seed will be chosen by draw.
(g) If three or more teams are tied, ties among divisional opponents will be broken first by using steps (b) through (f) and the head-to-head results will be used to break ties between non-divisional teams. When three or more teams from the same division are tied step (b) will consist of a mini- round robin among the tied teams. At any point during the process of breaking ties among three or more teams that the number of tied teams are reduced to two, head-to-head competition would be used as the primary tie-breaker, followed-by steps © through (f).

Give me a minute to process that.

Too much reading Poindexter

The sleeper has awoken. . .awakened. . .he woke up.

by SleepyFloyd7 on Feb 23, 2009 9:50 PM CST up reply actions

If I read that right...

Mizzou would have the tiebreak over KU based on the head-to-head sweep. OU would have the lead over MU because they have a better record against the South than Mizzou has against the North.

Thus:
OU
MU
KU

by RPT on Feb 23, 2009 9:51 PM CST up reply actions

sounds right

so again, under that scenario, next wednesday’s game would basically be for the conference.

by stlcardinalsfang on Feb 23, 2009 9:52 PM CST up reply actions

so if there's a tie between three teams

you break the ties within the division first (in this case, kU and Mizzou), then the winner of that tie goes to a tiebreaker with the team outside that division (Oklahoma).

by RoyalsFanInBillings on Feb 23, 2009 9:52 PM CST up reply actions

you mean 12-2, right?

cause either kU or OK is going to be 12-1 after tonight

by RoyalsFanInBillings on Feb 23, 2009 9:49 PM CST up reply actions

yeah

three teams at 12-2 on sunday night should the scenario come true.

otherwise, we lose on sunday, and we’re looking at third place almost for certain.

BTW, that's G.

Thank you, five famous athletes, one masked dance crew, and two people who I have never seen before.

i found it funny that gatorade thought it was a big secret

but i found the “g” on one of their bottles the weekend after the rose bowl and was able to match two with two. everyone acted so suprised when they actually put gatorade on the commerical for the super bowl.

Seriously, though.

I love those commercials.

And the dance crew provided a fantastic moment earlier in the month.

this game is so similar to the MU/KU game in Columbia

Except OU needs a few more bounces

And Aldritch would have been called for over the back there

I know we hate them, and I know OU doesn't have B. Griffin...

…but this is an outstanding win for Kansas. They just took seed precedence over Mizzou.

Now, if Mizzou knocks off KU, or beats OU, they take it back. But for now, KU > MU in the bracketeers’ eyes.

that sounded like I didn’t like it – which would be misleading. Strong Work RPT

Totally understood.

I’m always game for Photoshopping suggestions. That one will require a bit more of my time though.
