"Interest appears to be mutual."
Um…how in the world is interest "mutual" between Anderson and Alabama right now? This is the ultimate no-win situation. It doesn’t matter what Anderson says at this point—nothing’s going to prove whether he’s interested or not. If he says he is, he might just be angling for a better contract (he's got the most big-time agent in the south, pretty much); if he says he isn't, he still might be. And beyond that, during the season he's not going to say a single substantive word anyway.
But people are going to continue to speculate and build a narrative off of the nothing words he says and mislead people into believing there's a story when there's no proof of "mutual" interest whatsoever. It gets old.
(And again...have we proven that Anderson has any closer ties to 'Bama than "He's from the state?" Because I have to tell you...I have no interest in getting hired away by OU, whether I'm from Oklahoma or not.)

Quick question...
.I have no interest in getting hired away by OU, whether I’m from Oklahoma or not
What if it meant earning 176 percent of your current salary?
If Missouri weren't capable of offering the same, then sure...
…but is Alabama going to offer 176% of whatever Missouri can offer in inevitable extension talks? Doubtful. It’s pretty clear to me that this whole process (and the current #8 ranking) will get Anderson one helluva raise and awesome contract, and deservedly so. But let’s not pretend a) there are strong ties when there aren’t (unless somebody can prove to me there are—maybe I’m missing something), and b) Missouri can’t pay what Alabama can/will for a basketball coach. Football, sure…basketball, probably not.

I have nothing substantive to offer about Anderson, but I have heard rumblings that AD Mal Moore is looking/willing to drop more than $2 mil a year on the next basketball coach, so that $1.5 number from the article might be more of a teaser/starting point than the final offer. I wouldn’t be terribly surprised to see the salary hit $2.5 at the top end, almost 3x what Anderson is making now, although I don’t know if Anderson would be a candidate for that kind of money.
Alabama’s Athletic Department is pretty much perpetually swimming in cash — they’re always in the black and regularly make large contributions back to the general fund. With football under control, Moore is freed up to do a little more with that surplus for other sports, and it looks like Basketball is next on the radar.
Wow...
That information is just sick. Normally, I’m not worried about such things, but if Alabama is going to throw around that kind of money, then there are some crazy boosters down there.

yeah...
…if you’re willing to pay Mike Anderson something crazy like $2.5 million or something, then he’s yours. I love MA and hope he stays, but there’s no way he’s worth that much…very few coaches are…and if they’re going to move into that salary bracket, that will suck in more accomplished coaches than MA…

Don’t know anything about what he’s worth or what he’s worth to Alabama, just pointing out that the Alabama Athletic Dept. has a stupid amount of money to throw at this problem, and the last time they tried that it worked out pretty well, so I wouldn’t be surprised to see it again.
Funny you should mention that. Boring story:
When I was in school at Alabama, the state elected a man named Don Siegelman whose only (basically) platform point was to start a lottery to fix the financially strapped educational system. After he was elected, the churches mobilized to vote down the lottery, because Jesus hates lotteries, I guess.
He came up for reelection, ran on the same platform (lottery for education), was elected again, proposed another lottery, at which point the churches banded together and voted down the lottery.
There were no other viable plans to fund education, so the universities had to jack up tuition and cut their budgets.
Rumor has it that in-state tuition is cheaper because taxes go to support the school . . . but taxes weren’t enough, so you’d think the tuition hike would, at least, be evenly distributed among the in-staters who weren’t paying their share into the system and the out-of-staters who paid nothing.
Nope.
We out-of-staters got hit with something like a 20% increase that year if I recall correctly.
So the answer to your question is: lord, no, they’re lot lowering tuition with that surplus. Bastards.
Jesus hates lotteries....that is a great line
(at least to me as the resident Jew :-)

I don't think we'd have to offer Alabama's full salary
but I do think Anderson is in line for an extension/raise after this year, unless (God forbid) we lose out and lose in the first round of the NCAAs.
I agree with all of that.
The question becomes: What’s the magic number?
Does loyalty allow Missouri to keep the number under 1.25 mil?
We've got some interesting budget issues right now...
…but I still think we’d figure out a way to get up to 1.5 million. If ‘Bama proves willing to go over 2 million, I’ll start to get worried, but until then I see almost no chance of this happening.

If I knew the answer, I'd be drawing Anderson's salary
but I’d guess we can pay, say, 80 percent of what ’Bama would offer and have a reasonable chance of keeping him. (This is a complete WAG, btw.) Reasons being that Anderson has a good thing going here (finally), and does he really want to leave Mizzou for a school where basketball will always be an also-ran?

I'd take about 10 percent of either
or a minor rounding error in the federal bailout package.

What's exciting about all this?
If Alden does have to give Anderson a raise (which, with the way that things have gone, I reckon he’d deserve something), we get to read people pissing and moaning about it in Trib Talk for the next month.
I'm the guy that keeps Mr. Death in his pocket.
What's exciting is...
Anderson’s drawing interest from his home state school who can offer him $1.5 million a few weeks after reports of the budget slashing that’s going on inside the MU Athletic Department.
I’m not saying that I’m personally that concerned about it, but nothing is ever that easy when it comes to dollar signs in college athletics.
Folks who work(ed) at the Trib
have an in-house name for Trib Talk. They call it “Coward’s Corner.” Based on the old-school notion that if you want your comments in print, you should at least provide a name.

If Mike Alden let's Anderson get away, then he is a fool.
No matter what your feelings are of Mike Alden, he is not a fool…. except that time he hired that Snyder fella…. but he went and completely redeemed himself.
So….. for now, I will worry about whether Blake Griffin comes to Columbia with a giant chip on his shoulder, and worry about Mike coming back in April.

Those high dollar seats will be much easier to sell with Mike Anderson at the helm of this team next year…..

In Alden's defense (re: Snyder) ...
… I have heard from one extremely well-connected person that Alden REALLY wanted to hire Self instead of Snyder, but was over-ruled by the money people. Just saying that it’s possible Snyder’s hiring wasn’t necessarily all on Alden. He certainly gets all the blame (and took the credit when things were rolling). But his instincts might have been good when choosing Self v. Snyder.

Those seats are sold…people are just not sitting in them.

Several problems with this
The first of which is that the article isn’t in the Birmingham paper (which I read every morning), but the Mobile paper. As bad as the Birmingham News can be, it is a model of journalism compared to the Mobile Press. So shame on Atomic Teeth for sloppiness and for not including a link.
BTW, here’s the full article in question:

There’s another thing that no one is considering, which is the absolute contempt a significant portion of Alabama fans hold UAB. This especially seems to include those who live in Birmingham. As strange as that may seem, a lot of it runs along the lines of “how dare these upstart punks take any money/fame/glory/attention/press away from my beloved Tide!” as both schools are part of the University of Alabama system.
I sat across from a guy at a church function who said that he didn’t want Mike Anderson under any circumstances because he was a UAB guy. Auburn folks love to refer to Alabama as “UAT,” which drives Bama fans nuts. This may contribute to this wacky hatred also.
Now THAT is some interesting insight...thank you sir
+1

If the MP-R is good for one thing...
Its crazy coverage of SEC Media Days.
I’ve been visiting family in Mobile during that time period and the paper becomes like an SEC press release. I swear that like 7 of 8 pages that day were Media Day-related.
It is amazing
We had so many names for the Press-Register in the years I lived in Mobile – the Cash-Register and the Gayfers Gazette (after a local department store since gobbled up by Belk) are just two. I’m amused that their attempt to re-brand as the Press failed.
You will find some rabid, if not quality, sports coverage.
