Around SBN: Carmelo Anthony, Amar'e Stoudemire Vow To Fit In With Lin

Just got this from Gabe

Mizzou has announced it's football game against Nebraska has been moved to Thursday, October 8th and will be televised nationally by ESPN.

I bet the wave will look good around 11:15.

UPDATE, from The Boy: Dave Matter confirms.  Not sure how I feel about this just yet.  It's nice being the only game on, obviously, and it'll create the nighttime atmosphere we know and love, but...well...the logistics of getting people from StL and KC here in time for kickoff on a weekday is rather nightmarish.  This is where it stinks to have a vast majority of your fanbase live two hours away.

That sounds like a perfect three-day weekend.

Oct. 8: Watch Mizzou beat Nebraska, have beer-drinking competition
Oct. 9: Continue beer-drinking competition
Oct. 10: Finish beer-drinking competition
Oct. 11: Sleep
Oct. 12: Work

asbolute nightmare

Nevermind the fanbase being mostly out of the area, but how do you monitor parking? The students will still be in class Thursday evening, and they have every right to park in the spot they paid for during the week as the tailgater does…

I appreciate the need to grab guaranteed money as much as the next person, especially in this economy. I just see this being a nightmare and potentially being not worth the fallout.

They'll figure the logistics out ...

… I like it because you basically get the benefit of two bye weeks without actually having two bye weeks (you get 11 days to prepare for Nebraska and 9 days to prepare for Oklahoma State). Plus, the national exposure for Thursday night’s is pretty cool. And when we layeth the smacketh down, that’ll be even better.

I will believe the logistic part when I see it

Student parking is already a nightmare, but I consider it downright unfair to boot a kid out of their spot during the week…and that is exactly what they are going to need to do…or risk pissing off tailgaters (many of which will be in high-dollar areas which second as student parking)

I realize the scale is considerably different

but, don’t they have that same problem at Hearnes/Mizzou Arena during basketball season? I remember lots of friends who parked at Hearnes having to move their cars before a Monday night or Wednesday night game.

I know exactly how they'll figure out the logistics:

Students GTFO.

I’ve never seen a campus department take such enjoyment out of screwing students like Parking & Transportation does.

by elmedico27 on Feb 14, 2009 1:52 PM CST up reply actions

I get where Beef's coming from, though

And that’s from the St. Louis area as a big-time tailgater. It’s pretty sweet for those of us who are on campus, but for everyone else who has to drive in from St. Louis or KC, it sucks.

If it’s a 7:00 kickoff on a Thursday, they can’t seriously kick kids out of parking spaces until 5:00. That only leaves a bunch of unhappy alumni only two hours to tailgate. The only way this would work is if the university decided to cancel all classes that begin after 3:30 so students could clear SG-4/Hearnes parking lot by 4:00 for the tailgaters.

Maybe the alumni can use some of their pull to make that happen. More likely, it’s going to be a nightmare.

speaking as an alum

fuck the alumni. it’s not about them. they can deal with it. it ought to be about the students (except for the freshmen, who only came to suck up the glory of ’07).

isn’t reactor field paved now? how many does that hold?

note to mizzou administration, do it like they do it here in austin: lots of park and rides with free shuttles. problem solved.

by amorphous on Feb 10, 2009 11:59 AM CST up reply actions

I very much disagree with you

Reactor is somewhat paved I believe…and what you are talking about would take YEARS to put together…not a 1-game situation 8 months from now. Don’t get me wrong. Were I to be a student, I would love this…

but…

the alumni and their money are the life-blood. ESPECIALLY now. The AD used a TON of good will built up from the 12-2 season on the parking issue last year. I pay a good amount of money PER GAME to tailgate (and I am WAY down on the list)…and unless there are some pretty dynamic plans in the works to not screw over the students for parking during class, employees while they are at work, and still be able to get alumni in there in a reasonable fashion, then I do not see this working well.

Since we get the Thursday announcing team...

This could make for a fun game for RMN:

See who the first person is to:
- Get a picture with Chris “All That is Awesome” Fowler
- Punch Jesse Palmer in the face
- Ask to borrow Craig James’ credit card from his days at SMU

What a pain in the ass

Taking the kids to a night game on a weekend is difficult, but doable. Taking them on a school night? Game should end at around 11:30, which should get us home at around 2:00 a.m. May have to rethink attendance at this one.

by Michael Atchison on Feb 9, 2009 4:08 PM CST reply actions

the parking thing...

On the parking passes that are issued to, well, everyone, it states that you don’t have parking privileges for game time. The P&T jerks will just tell everyone to clear out by noon Thursday.

yeah...

But, most of the parking areas that are in question are the lots around the field, which is mostly Dormites across stadium. Regardless, this is going to be a nightmare for those of us that work here (Down at the Dalton, which is G lot (I think).

Long drive from Tulsa

This sucks! It’s hard enough to make it all the way to CoMo on the weekend. Thursday night? Are you kidding? I thought this was becoming a big time program. You won’t see Ohio State or USC playing on a thursday night. Very unhappy.

The Wave -

We’re going to be nationally televised with no competition: YAAAAAAAAAAY!
People can’t travel well: BOOOOOOOOOO!
The scheduling helps us prepare for a huge Big 12 North showdown: YAAAAAAAAAY!
The parking’s going to be awful: BOOOOOOOO!

And this...

…is exactly why I railed against Thursday-night games at K-State last fall when ESPN’s Tim Griffin suggested them. I’m all for TV exposure and money and all that, but logistically it’s just not a good idea at K-State with all our fans coming in from KC (two hours), Wichita (two hours), or Topeka (one hour).

At least we don’t have the parking issues you guys will have.

teams like OU, or Texas, or OSU, maybe Nebraska...MAYBE Iowa State...

…they could handle it because a large portion of their fanbase is nearby. Teams like KSU or MU, which are a bit more in the middle of nowhere, will have a lot more trouble.

Of course, it’s the NU game, so they don’t have to worry about people not actually coming—it’ll just be a nightmare.

I hear ya

I did my grad schooling at Rutgers, so I have some first-hand Thursday night experience. It was a great idea for RU, since literally millions of people live within an hour of the school, and there is all sort of public transport that mitigates parking issues, plus the stadium is just smaller, so the negatives were much smaller relative to the positives. At MU, it strikes me as a problem. Also, forget about anything resembling meaningful education happening on that Thursday.
