OK, I'll say it

I don’t really get draft day.

I am a little excited to see where my favorite college players are going to play.
I am interested in seeing what my favorite pro teams do.
I realize that NFL and NBA drafts have a much bigger affect on a team’s short-term success than MLB and NHL, so the draft is a little more important.

But, I don’t really understand why it’s that much fun to watch the draft. I mean, other than the outcome, why should anyone care? I understand watching any sporting event – even the ones I think are complete wastes of time (NASCAR, American soccer) – because of the competition. But, there’s no competition here. It’s not a sporting event, it’s not a sitcom, it’s not a gameshow. To me, it’s the least-exciting reality drama ever.

That being said, I’m sitting at work today, so I’ll be following the thread to see who does what because I’m bored. But, if I was at home, I wouldn’t do anything other than check in every hour or so to see if any Mizzou guys had been drafted yet.

By all means, if it is exciting to you, I’m certainly not trying to say you are wrong in some way for that. God knows most people won’t spend 2 1/2 hours watching marathon coverage just because it’s on. I just don’t get it.

Well...

I like seeing where Mizzou players land. I’m looking forward to seeing what the Chiefs grab. Oh, and I love suprise picks that make all the fans for certain teams booing that player. Other than that, I’m gonna watch the Royals game more than the draft after the first 15 picks or so.

If you don't watch the draft

and it’s inane 5 hour pre-coverage (which I confess I am), then you miss things like Matthew McConaughey doing a half-assed review of good and bad draft picks called “Ghosts of Drafts Past” and then throwing in a pop for his newest movie called “Ghosts of Girlfriends Past”… or also miss the easy-on-the-eyes microphone describing Matthew Stafford’s older sister as being “gorgeous” for no apparent reason. Let’s follow THAT story line, please :)

The appeal of the draft . . .

is that everyone wins on draft day. No matter how terrible your team has been, you can watch the draft and think “we’re going to be awesome.”

I guess my biggest reason for not really caring that much

is that I’m not a huge NFL fan. I like it, because I really like football, but I didn’t grow up with a team. I was 10 when the Big Red left STL and I was living in Columbia when the Rams came. I have adopted the Chiefs, but I follow the NFL less than the average fan.

by Andy--01 on Apr 25, 2009 1:21 PM CDT up reply actions

Same here

I grew up in the Columbia area, and the Cardinals and Chiefs both sucked, but I remember CBS showing a ton of Bears games, which is how I became a Bears fan…watching Walter Payton run roughshod over the NFC. Then the Cardinals left when I was 7, and I didn’t like how the Rams bailed on LA and got sick of the Chiefs hype…I’ve always remained a Bears fan. I’m a Chargers fan by default because I dislike the Chiefs and absolutely hate the Raiders and Broncos.

That being said, if I had to choose between an NFL game and a Premier League game (English soccer), I’m clearly going with the latter. I’m a huge Manchester United fan (just finished watching them put 5 in against Tottenham in a span of 22 minutes.)

As a Brit told me one time…only in America can you take a game that lasts 60 minutes and drag it out for 4 hours.

by CPC on Apr 25, 2009 1:45 PM CDT up reply actions

It's just that soccer feels like it takes 5 hours

Actually, I enjoy watching international soccer because of the passion that comes through, but it gets SO BORING at times. I typically will FF through a match on Tivo and watch the plays that lead up to a score.

Interestingly, I could watch a 1-0 baseball game and have no problem.

Playing soccer...

much better than watching it. Some say the same thing about baseball, but I’ve seen more 1-0 games, ties, and (love these) 0-0 ties in soccer than boring games in baseball. Just terrible to spectate

Never take life seriously. Nobody gets out alive anyway - An Onymous

by ratherfantastic on Apr 25, 2009 1:53 PM CDT up reply actions

I think that's the difference

between your general American sports fans and fans of international sports. In America, you’re always looking for the home run, slam dunk, big tackle, etc. Where in sports like soccer and cricket, you’re watching the strategy. A 1-0 soccer game could be extremely boring to someone who isn’t that interested in soccer, but it could have a ton of excitement in exciting build up plays, missed shots, etc.

by CPC on Apr 25, 2009 1:57 PM CDT up reply actions

I was going to avoid this...

but I’ve lost focus on the mindless ESPN drivel…

I could watch soccer all day long (and have done before) because of this fact. I can’t suffer baseball live because of the infernally slow pace and the fact that there is nothing going on more than there is something going on. It’s like getting a really watered down drink somewhere. When there is “nothing going on” in soccer, there is constant tactical movement, etc. In the interest of full disclosure, though, I played soccer, and not baseball… so there you have it

by Other Side of the Pillow on Apr 25, 2009 2:06 PM CDT up reply actions

Yeah...

Biggest general American sports fan right here. But I play baseball, so that makes me enjoy it more.

by ratherfantastic on Apr 25, 2009 2:43 PM CDT up reply actions

I pretty much agree with this

The draft generally is something for which I don’t need to make time. I definitely care about the results, but not enough to spend 4 hours on a Saturday watching that instead of a baseball game, playoff hockey/basketball, or even golf.

Even though the contract has already been negotiated.

and we all know that Staffords going #1 to the Lions, I bet they’ll still use all the time on their clock just to piss everyone off.

by pinkelposse on Apr 25, 2009 12:28 PM CDT reply actions

Likewise the St. Louis Rams--

Who have known the Lions have selected Stafford since last night (I believe that’s when I saw the story break)… they did the same last year under similar circumstances. :|

by Other Side of the Pillow on Apr 25, 2009 12:33 PM CDT up reply actions

The Chiefs pick still intrigues me...

A lot of people said Jason Smith or Aaron Curry for the last month or so, but suddenly some guy from LSU, Tyson Jackson is suddenly KC’s presumed #3 pick, because he could fit nicely with a 3-4 defense. Also, a certain wide reciever’s dad was seen at the draft wearing nothing but Chiefs apparel. Interesting…

At this point...

…I will pay a substantial amount of money to keep Jeremy Maclin away from football purgatory in Oakland.

Also, the Chiefs need to be all over Coffman in the third round. Just saying.

Alright...

said WR’s dad in last post was Michael Crabtree’s pop. He apparently said he would love to have his son go to Kansas City, but all he wants is his son not going to Oakland. I feel sorry for whoever lands there (please not Maclin, please not Maclin)

Is it random assignment

or do you try to assign the beer based on something specific about the player (i.e. Maclin would be a St. Louis beer, Stafford could be Lowenbrau (since he’s a Lion))?

Gary Horton (ESPN's DraftCast chatter):

Gary Horton: Well, this is as vintage as an Al Davis pick as we’ll ever see. We know they had a tremendous need at WR. I believe the reason they made this pick was all about speed. Heyward-Bey has rare speed. He’s probably the biggest deep receiver in the draft. He has size. He’s an electric player. But he has considerable less discipline and concentration. He doesn’t have a lot of huge production and he’s an inconsistent route runner. This guy probably has top 10 athleticism, but the reason he was expected to go late in the first round was that lack of production and consistency. I could see them passing on Michael Crabtree, because they didn’t have an accurate 40 time on him. It would have been a reach for Percy Harvin. But, why in the world, if you wanted Heyward-Bey and you loved his speed, why wouldn’t you trade back 10-11 spots, knowing you could still get him.

Is there a huge $$ difference between #32 and #33 in the NFL

I know there is in the NBA when you drop from 1st round to 2nd round. If so, that would really suck for Ziggy. However, if he has a good career, he’ll make plenty of money.

I dont think it is quite like the NBA

I think the structure goes through the first few rounds before it pretty much falls off to where you may getting a small signing bonus and not much else

I’d love to see Ziggy remain in black and gold but I’m not sold on Justin Hartwig as our center for the future. I bet they draft Unger.

Was a pick from Hawaii late in the draft (6th round) last year by the Washington Redskins and was one of the more successful rookie QB’s, kind of a suprise to everyone. The only one better was, of course, Matt Ryan. Let’s hope Berman is right about this.

From Brad of the departed and sorely missed 12th Manchild:

I think Stephen McGee is an interesting (i’m looking at you, Psychology Community) example of how one, after proper conditioning, can UNLEARN a skill. After years of being conditioned to tuck a ball rather than risk an INT, Stephen no longer knows how to make proper reads or hit what I call the “pressure-pass”, that last second on-the-money throw that you see all great quarterbacks make.

God, he was such a stud in high school, though.
