From the blotter on the Trib website....
Blaine Patrick Dalton, 18, of 401 Kentucky Blvd., Room 4140, possession of a controlled substance, liquor law violation, $4,800 bond.
Looks like alcohol and….well…something worse

Ugh.
Well, Mr. Dalton. I hope you’re innocent, but if you’re not, I think you’re messing with the wrong coach.
I’ll be interested to see how HCGP handles this. As “controlled substance” could be a wide variety of things, the appropriate response could be anywhere from a 1-game suspension (though, as a red-shirt, that’s not all that severe) to removal from the team.
Of course, I hold out hope that he’s innocent, but I’m not holding my breath.

$4,800 is a worrisome number...
without starting the guessing game, that is all I am going to say. That is a good deal of money.

usually....
that amount of bond means it is a felony.

Folks...here is the one warning...
We are going to have to be very careful about the inferences made here, and we will not be able to tolerate any accusations or otherwise. Nevermind the “innocent until proven guilty thing”…but I am going to ask we toe the line on this and keep the discussion appropriate and without accusations or guesses about specifics.

It's because he's white.
There, I said it.
But seriously, I completely agree: let’s not pass judgment until we know the facts.
Seeking a new signature...
The Trib.
Columbia police stopped a vehicle driven by Dalton, 18, at about 11 p.m. Thursday near Providence Road and Burnam Avenue and found 10 pills of Hydrocodone, a prescription painkiller, and alcohol, Deputy Chief Tom Dresner said. Further details about the arrest were unavailable.
If he’s got the pills in a container other than the original prescription bottle with his name on it, the doctor’s name, and the issuing pharmacy/pharmacist, then you’re in possession of a controlled substance

you beat me to it...thanks for getting that up there

some additional information
Dalton was arrested on suspicion of felony possession of a controlled substance, minor in possession of alcohol, possession of false identification and three traffic charges. He was released from the Boone County Jail after posting a $4,800 bond."
That is a pretty bad night there for Mr. Dalton, and would also explain the size of the bond amount.

and Vicoden is a trade name for hydrocodone and acetaminophen
it’s commonly prescribed for moderate to severe pain.

oh god.
come on. Blaine, your better than this
"Yeah this my signature, big deal wanna fight about it."
Not really sure how all this works and...
obviously there are multiple things at work here but if the possession of a controlled substance is a result of it not being in his prescription bottle with his name on it, couldn’t he go back and prove it was his subscription and be ok or not?
I guess my thinking is that the felony is the possession charge so say for instance your charged with that but can then go back and show that you are the rightful carrier of the painkillers, would they drop the charge?

Without making any accusations
speaking merely in the hypothetical…
If the DA had enough of a hard-on to bust you (is it still Kevin Crane?) he could probably argue that you had it in a blank bottle because you were wanting to sell it.

that was my other thought...
I wondered if the number of pills was the issue

I think that is what this is going to come down to...
I mean…BAD night for Chase…but each of these has so be looked almost separately.
Traffic violations (as long as he was not impaired, which does not appear to be the case) are not a biggee
Fake ID – dumb, but not huge
Alcohol – real dumb, and certainly something the coaches would punish around
Painkillers – It is going to be all about how he obtained them and go from there. And while you can assume the worst (booze AND pills), I dont think you can punish or judge him for how you THINK that was going to end up.

hmmm..and me with no way to fix that...my bad...good catch

I tend to give kids the benefit of the doubt myself...
and I think you’re correct in that each of these needs to be looked at separately at this point and if the painkiller issue can be resolved I don’t see anything here that is out of the ordinary for a hell of a lot of college students. Obviously athletes are held to a higher standard but I think this could be much less than it’s being made out. Seems like these things usually explode at first and then bits and pieces trickle out making it less damning.
I thought I’d come over here and see what you guys had to say rather than get myself caught up in a moral debate with the folks at Tigerboard…I’m fairly confident that my first question which both of you kindly answered would have been met with some comment about Mark Mangino encouraging players to run over eachother with cars in a parking lot.

I think the only answer here...
… is that we have no answers.
All we’ve got is questions, and the answers will have to come with time.

wonder how long until
GP or the University release a statement other than “the University is cooperating with the City of Columbia and Boone County authorities.”
by CPC on May 1, 2009 4:25 PM CDT up reply actions
probably depends on how well statement 1 kills the story
I’d think the ideal situation is release statement 1, then wait to see how strong the prosecutor’s case is. Then, release statement 2.

something about the phrase...
cooperating with Boone County authorities sounds very smokey and the bandit to me

I have a personal

is Columbia in Boone county I assume??

agree completely...
hopefully everything get’s worked out for the kid on a personal level from a more trivial standpoint when looking at it from a team perspective it’s really a non factor from what I understand for you guys.

or accusation that the KC Star protected kU but trashed MU :-)
like rpt said below…the answers will come, and I am guessing/hoping a well-reasoned decision from there.

I think when he was in high school
he got in trouble for having Alcohol. It may have been a Rockhurst player. I hope I’m wrong, obviously.
I think a large percentage of college students could say
“I never got in trouble with alcohol in HS only because I never got caught.”

I wonder what kind of points
we will get in the Fulmer cup.
Icing on the cake
Pinkel’s twitter from yesterday: Just finished talking with the younger players about leadership.
which is why I prefer this place...
so much more…I know we all “hate” eachother in a rivalry sense but that place goes from 0 to insane in no time…and don’t get me wrong I’m well aware there are KU message boards that are the same way. I just appreciate the cordial hatred that has been politely established between the folks at Rock M Nation and Rock Chalk Talk… : D

ah yes…you seem to know exactly what I’m talking about

Both SBN communities for MU and kU are very level-headed.
But I can imagine TigerBoard today…

Chicago White Sox Examiner — Your what hurts?
Not to play the rumor game but...
from everything I know the earlier post about him getting in trouble for alcohol in high school is true. I was a year ahead of him but I went to Jeff City. Some of us on the football team went out to watch baseball my junior year when we played Blue Springs South and Dalton didn’t play. Supposedly he was really freaking good at baseball so when we asked why their star wasn’t on the field the big rumor was he wrecked his car drinking, but nothing ever stuck from a legal standpoint. All the guys on our baseball team made a big deal about it, because our AD would destroy kids for lesser things.
Hopefully that was all just high school rumors, but I kind of doubt it now. From my experience this sort of thing just doesn’t happen once, people act the way they act and then they eventually get caught. They don’t just “get unlucky” the one time they make a mistake.
After a quick perusal of Missouri's casenet
Mr. Dalton indeed was sued in January of 2008 for personal injury-vehicular. The case was dismissed.
He has no criminal record on the site. Maybe because he was a minor. <—- Speculation

Get used to seeing this mugshot fellow Tiger fans if...
Dalton ever does become the Mizzou starting QB.
What?
It’s not like opposing fans would ever harp on embarrassing photographs and bring them up ad nauseam (I’m looking at you Nebraska fans and the nose picking shot).
