Reading the story, it sounds to me like Illinois is backing out rather than a mutual split. Disappointing, if you ask me.

Lame Illinois, Lame

I liked the series, sure Mizzou dominated, but they were great games, and one of the few Div 1 v Div 1 Non-Con out there.

It was a treat. Well I guess savor it now, because not for long.

Not surprising, this had been coming for awhile

It will be interesting to see if this does result in a seventh home game for the Tigers in some years….something I will never complain about.

meh... i don't really care about illinois

i’m fine with this as long as we pick up a decent opponent. home and home is cool with me. i’d like to see any big 10 or somebody like lsu or arizona state or west virginia.

on a side note i’m glad we picked up wyoming since that’s an easy road game for me. a rotation of wyoming, colorado state and air force would be awesome

by Wooderson on Jun 1, 2009 1:12 PM CDT reply actions

I believe that should be the case...

Alden has said they want a BCS-type school, 2 mid-majors and a D-AA’ish school for the four OOC games going forward. 2011 already has Wyoming and Western Ill on the docket as home games, along with 4 home conference games (we have 4 in the odd years, 3 in the even with the kU game in KC). Soooooo……we might start out the 2011 season on the road the first two weeks (as Wyoming is the first scheduled game on Sept 17th, or we may get an extra home game. Either way, it will be interesting to see if Alden and Co. stick to their (desired) word and how this will work out.

(please give me Memphis or Ole Miss for a road and road…I dont care about the home games if we play them) :-)

The Wyoming game

was only scheduled after Christiansen left, right?

by CPC on Jun 1, 2009 1:24 PM CDT up reply actions

oooh...I dont know

I wanted to say it was after he left…but I am just not sure (and not coming up with the answer via a quick search)

Nope

It was scheduled before. Can’t remember when exactly, but it was an interesting coincidence that Wyoming and Toledo were already on the books when OCDC left and DCME was (briefly) rumored for the Rockets’ job.

i've never been to memphis or oxford

but i’ve heard they’re both worth the trip.

i planned to go to reno this year, but it turns out i have to be in ohio for a wedding that weekend. i’m trying to angle for the ohio st-illinois game instead, but i don’t think the logistics will work. my wife has promised to take me to a game at the horseshoe at some point. we’ll see

Memphis is nice

If you like drinking your ass of on Beale, and you love to gorge on the worlds best BBQ.
Just remember there is safety in numbers.
Oxford is nice, if you like pretty co-eds you can’t have…

Kansas City politely disagrees on the BBQ

but Memphis runs a close second

I would disagree with you

But I’ve never actually had the pleasure of KC BBQ. So I will have to take myself out of the judging on that one…

There's a reason

why when someone says BBQ, KCMO is the first thing that comes to mind…not Memphis

by CPC on Jun 1, 2009 2:41 PM CDT up reply actions

No need to do BBQ in Memphis...

…just go to Dyer’s instead, and partake in the world’s most famous vat of grease. Mmmmm…..Vitamin G…mmmmmmmmmmmmmmm…

I have to say I was very impressed with their wings the last time

I was down there (last summer). LARGE and quite good.

never actually had CJ's wings

as I am not a blazing hot wing fan, nor am I a tremendous buffalo wing person either. The wings at Dyers had a good taste and solid heat but were not the classic “buffalo” style. Just very tasty.

Rec'd because....

I Rec CJ’s , you don’t have to get BYFO if you don’t want.

If you don’t like spicy go with mild, they taste great……….I have them send the sauce out here so we can try and cook them once in awhile they are that addictive.

Don't forget the Cheifs too!

And on a side note The Royals have improved 2 games at the 50 game mark for past 3 years, which tells me we’ll be at .500 next year, and a 1st place team in 2014.

I'm with Beef

(yeah, I know, that’s what she said)
I want Memphis or Ole Miss for a home and home. Mainly because I won’t have to pay for a hotel to go see Mizzou for a change, and probably most importantly because I hate both schools with the undying intensity of a thousand suns.
Although, admittedly, the University of Memphis State University Tigers is a pale subsitution for the Illini (at least in the eyes of most alumi, I would think)…

Very true about Memphis...

I “think” Memphis would fit in with the “mid-major” idea though, so I propose revolving and permanent home and homes with Ole Miss and Memphis…staggered so we go to one in one season and the other in the next.

I’ve decided…this HAS to happen…

Mid-major in theory

But, honestly, it’s somewhat difficult to label those conferences that are mid-majors in football anymore.
Memphis, for all the grief I give them, is actually not a quality program on par with Big 12 or SEC. But they always tend to play a top tier team close every year, even pulling an upset occasionally. My guess is that would be Mizzou (as the Memphis-Ole Miss series is coming to an end down here in Dixie in the next few years).
Ole Miss top game each year is Mississippi State in the Egg Bowl, but they really hate LSU and Alabama. A friendly rivalry towards the Good Guys in Black (sorry Hawk) would be lovely, especially since they are losing a CUSA opponent off their schedule and wouldn’t it be nice to add a Big 12 game?

I don't know how unilateral it was...

…Mike Alden was on 810 in KC last week and didn’t seem terribly broken up about the series ending.

True perhaps, but only because I think he saw the writing on the wall

The story is that Illinois was wanting out perhaps after the first two of this latest series, and we are about on #5. Also, from our standpoint, the opportunity we now have in KC made it REALLY tough for us to schedule six home games in years where we lose the kU game in Columbia. It is what made us have to beg out of the SMU series, since the return road game, the Ill game and kU game meant we would only have 5 home games, which Alden is entirely against.
