NCAA Track Championships - Day 2
Rough weather played havoc for most of the afternoon yesterday, but as The Boy linked this morning here, the Tigers still faired pretty well. Only two Mizzou competitors will see the track today, as sophomore Lars Rise currently sits in 8th place in the decathlon (top 8 will score nationally and be an All-American) and will compete in the final five events, starting with the 110m hurdles at 2:30 p.m. Meanwhile, senior Kaela Rorvig will start the hepathlon with four events today, beginning with the 100 meter hurdles at 11:15 a.m. Chris Rohr, Krishna Lee and Brian Hancock will all compete tomorrow for All-American honors in the hammer throw (twice) and pole vault.

Rorvig is 10th in the 100
at 13.86…just under what she did at the Big XII’s at 13.79

100 or 100H?
From the time and your previous post I’m guessing 100H…..that is a pretty good time, and 10th place. Hopefully she can keep slowly taking people down!!!!

Rorvig finishes day 1 in 23rd place...
she is about 120 points off of her Big XII Championships pace…so not the day she was probably looking for

nice?
how is his endurance…..for the 1500m? Can he make up the difference? I am hoping for him.
GO RISE!

Dont know about his endurance...
They JUST put up the results for the pole vault…he slipped just a bit to 7th, but is less than 100 points out of 4th and more than 100 points clear of 8th. The way I look at this is 8th is not only an All-American honor for him, but team points for Mizzou as well. Team points mean we place in the championships, and placing in the championships means more Director’s Cup points…so that is what I am after here.

Rise in the javelin is solid...
of the Big XII competitors (of which there are many in this competition), he finished 2nd behind Cleve of kSU (currently 2nd in this meet) at the Big XII Championships. He was also 5 feet short of his all time high for the event, so a PB here could be really big for him. The 1500 is not nearly as strong for him, as he finished 6th in the field, though 12 seconds off of a PB.
Interestingly, his PB’s in these last two sports he has had for awhile, meaning he has likely transitioned away from them a bit when it comes to focus or strength.

Also, there are two people I believe just ahead of Rise
who he is better than in the last two events….so he may have some ground he can cover there as well.

The 1500 and javelin are pretty different events in comparison to the rest of the decathlon. The overall score is going to benefit more by working on the speed and power…improving on those areas will lead to improvements in the long jump, 100, 110H and high jump and pole vault to an extent. The 1500 is just about surviving and maintaining your place. It’s very rare for a decathlete to be a good 1500 runner simply because the training for that is so different from all the other events.
Man I wish I was down in Fayetteville.
Some additional score information...
Rise is currently in 7th, 61 points behind Otto of aTm in 5th and 94 points back of Barrefors of NU in 4th. At the recent Big XII Championships (where Rise finished 4th to Otto in 3rd and Barrefors in 6th), Rise made up 87 on Otto in the last two events, and made up 147 points on Barrefors.
Will be interesting to see how the finish goes…IF the finish ever goes :-) I actually have to pick up my wife from the airport in about 45 minutes and never imagined I would not know the final results at this point in the evening.

I have never been to a collegiate meet with the decathlon being contested
I guess I kind of thought it was a little more fluid and straight from when they started. I never thought it would be the last events being contested on the night

They're on a bit of a rolling schedule.
I believe they have to have at least 30 minutes from the completion of one event before they start another. Factor that in with having to work all the track events in the decathlon into gaps between the prelims/finals of the standard track events (while maintaining the minimum time gap), and you get a long day.
Not as bad as the 5k prelims yesterday though…imagine starting a race at 12:40 am. That had to be rough, especially on the east coast guys.
oy...that does suck
well…the wife will be landing at any second, so that brings an end to my night on the computer…would love for Rise to not only achieve AA again but to help us with team points as well

good points
Very rare to have a middle distance runner decide to become a decathlete, if you suck at middle distance you just go up a few distances until your endurance matches with your speed or lack there of.

Team Race Implications
Matt Centrowitz of Oregon pulled out of the men’s 1500 prelims, which will seriously hurt their chances in the team race. That’s great news for our conference friends (for this weekend anyways) Texas A&M.
And wow…the mens 10k is actually entertaining. This is a first.
All-American for Rise!
5th place finish with 7776 which I believe is a personal best. 2nd of the Big XII guys behind Cleve of Kansas State. Great performance for him!!
Nice to see him pass Otto and Barrefors :-)
