Just a quick question
How in the HELL is the 2008 Border War a "more memorable moment" than the '07 Border War to a neutral observer? I can understand it from a Kansas and/or anti-Mizzou perspective, but how is an 11:00 game on FSN with no postseason ramifications bigger than a national primetime game that determined which team of two historic rivals would ascend to No. 1 in the country?
I refuse to declare media bias, but I have no issues declaring media idiocy.

I guess you could make the argument that it was a more exciting game from start to finish. Other than that, not sure.

not really, though...
…the first half of last year’s game wasn’t exactly enthralling, nor was 2007. I mean, 2008 had the last-second finish that 2007 didn’t exactly have, but…yeah, what a horrifically stupid thing to say…especially since the headline of his 2007 write-up was “A Border War unlike any of the rest”…

Almost posted something about this on Mizzourah
Idiotic. I actually like Griffin but he says some really stupid shit sometimes. Obviously ‘08 was a better game but the list isn’t “Best Games in Big 12 History.” It’s “Most Memorable Moments.” Let the ratings do the talking. Wasn’t Armageddon the most watched game of the entire ’07 college football season? Or maybe it was just Gameday for Armageddon but regardless, that says something.

I don't even agree that '08 was a better game
The ’07 game had great plays on both sides of the ball, but in the 1st 3 Qs, only MU could capitalize. Kansas came back and had the ball with a chance to take the lead in the closing minutes.
The only reason that 08 would be deemed better from a “game” standpoint, and not an “importance” standpoint, would be because the comeback was completed.

I dunno...it was a pretty remarkable fourth quarter in '08
I really want to put on my black-and-gold glasses and agree with you, but I’m not sure. It isn’t just that the comeback was completed—remember that we were actually the ones coming back from down 16 early in the second half. So really, we completed the comeback, but then they bounced back from our comeback. In the last 7 minutes of the game the lead changed hands four times, and we had a not entirely implausible field goal attempt to tie. There are obviously different ways to measure “memorable”, and ultimately I think people will remember the ’07 game long after the ’08 game has become an historical footnote (or maybe a “Forgotten Classic” described on whatever the 2067 version of the internet turns out to be), but for a neutral observer just flipping on the TV to watch the end of the game, 2008 was probably more exciting.

Lame
‘08 had an exciting finish, but the stakes weren’t of National importance this time. No #1 ranking and no North Title on the line. Yeah, it would have been nice to have won it, and yeah, it should be a favorite of KU fans, but it’s not the best. I’m actually fine with the loss ever since Zaire Taylor hit that shot. Hopefully that makes a list of the most exciting games some day.

I should also add...
Here’s what Rock Chalk Talk had to say about 2007 coming in at No. 23 (emphasis added):
Wha? #23? I mean, sure, it wasn’t an epic game, but still a fantastic game. With incredible implications. It was basically an Elite Eight game (with the Big 12 Championship being a potential Final Four game, etc.) between two rivals that hate each other as much as any other pair in the country. Only, magnified by ten because they are never, ever good (ever), and it was the only game on at the time, and a billion people watched, and Carl Peterson shoved 10,000 extra SRO people and you couldn’t move and you had to wait for hours to go to the bathroom and people were drunk and Gameday was there and it had a great almost-comeback and it was a good game. It should be higher. If it was between Oklahoma and Texas, where would it rank? Huh?

Thanks for the link.
And yeah, as you can probably tell, I think the whole thing is bogus.
Don’t get me wrong, I obviously enjoyed the 2008 game more. And it probably had more of an exciting finish.
But circumstances have to be included. And, its hard for any game in Big 12 history to top that in terms of ramifications. Obviously, a couple of Red River Shootouts have involved similarly ranked teams, but those are in October. Obviously, still huge games, and important ones, but it doesn’t have the same feel as one on Thanksgiving weekend.
Despite the loss, it doesn’t get any better than t his. It has to be in the Top 10, if not higher. Has to.
Griffin is WAY off on this one.

I think...
…if either team had ended up in the national title game, it would be a top-10 game. As it was, it was a regular season showdown between bitter rivals having their best seasons in ages, and gave the winner the chance to get into the national title game. I do agree it should be higher than it was, but there have been some memorable moments in Big 12 history. It will be interesting to see the upcoming entries on the list.
Ranking the ‘08 game above ’07 is unconscionable. To be perfectly frank, I’m surprised the ’08 game would even rank among the top 25 moments in Big 12 history.

Good description by RCT
I’ve made that same argument that Armageddon was an Elite 8 game and that winning it broke Mizzou’s Final Four drought.

my thoughts exactly
even right now, fresh off the 2008 season, any unbiased person would more likely remember the 2007 game than the comeback kU had in 08. in 5 years nobody would remember the kU comeback but they would probably still remember the 07 game.
what’s the over/under on where the kicked ball ranks?
by jws_ on Jun 13, 2009 10:32 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
kicked ball
I imagine the kicked ball game will be Top 5. So I guess my over/under would be 4.5 or something. I’d be a bit shocked if #1 were anything other than the Texas-USC national title game—it’s certainly the biggest non-conf win in Big 12 history and probably the best National Title game of the BCS era. I would imagine that the K-State/A&M and Texas 4th-down Play Action Big 12 Title games will also be very, very high.
I assume that, other than kicked ball, he’s probably done with Mizzou games, right? I mean, we all remember 51-50 over Okie St. and the South Carolina Indep Bowl and the bowl loss to Oregon St., but I’m not sure anyone else does.

I'm guessing...
…we’ll be seeing “Roll Right” (Texas’ win in the first CCG), K-State/A&M in 1998, OU’s title in 2000, UT’s title in 2005, K-State/OU in 2003, Nebraska 1997, Crabtree’s catch last year, and some Red River Shootout games among others in the top 10 or 15.
