Radical BCS Restructuring Plan Brought Forth
The Mountain West is bringing the thunder...not sure it will have the staying power...especially when you get to this caveat:
"Under his proposal, a conference would qualify for one of the BCS bowls only by meeting two criteria: playing at least 20 regular-season games in a two-year period against teams from the six major BCS conferences; and winning at least 40 percent of those games."
Yeah...I dont think a lot of schools are going to be able to change their schedules around like that, never mind a HUGE blow to the smaller D-1 conferences.

I really like this proposal
I’m tired of cruddy non-conference schedules. It probably has no chance of actually being implemented, but I like it.
I don't understand
All of the 6 BCS conferences would still qualify because they would obviously play 20 games against teams from the 6 major BCS conferences (in conference play). This would only affect the current non-BCS schools? What would be the incentive for BCS teams to play non-BCS teams, since all of the benefit would go to the non-BCS conference?
Wouldn't this kill the Mountain West
If all of the conferences have to schedule a lot of games against BCS conferences, why would they play good non-BCS teams?
It was in a 2-year time period.
so to average things out you have to play 10 BCS level teams – and in the case of the Big 12 a lot of teams would have to change their schedules to allow for one or two more BCS level teams.
Basically it means that Nebraska won’t be able to challenge for a Sun Belt championship…

The Pac 10 is closest to having an acceptable schedule per these guidelines
as they play 9 games in conference per season, leaving only 1 game left in the Big 6. But something like this would pretty much kill the Sun Belt and MAC and possibly relegate them likely to D-1AA status after awhile.

I think you might have it wrong...
It says a conference must play 20 games against the 6 BCS conference teams, not that a team must play 20 games. That’s a big difference. This rule change wouldn’t affect the 6 BCS Conferences but might make it easier for a conference like the MWC to qualify teams. The MWC has nine teams, so those nine teams would have to combine for the 20 games and win 8 of them.
I think this might actually hurt the ltitle guy if I understand it correctly. If Utah goes undefeated but the rest of the MWC struggles over a two year period and only wins 35% of its games against the major BCS conference schools, then Utah wouldn’t be eligible for a BCS bowl. At least that’s how I read the statement.

hmm...alright...that sounds right...but still...
how do you mandate that across a conference? 12 teams in the Big XII…how is that going to work? Rotation? You could not possibly put this into play until probably 10 years from now given how far out some schools have scheduled. And I still dont see how the conference is going to get into scheduling OUT of conference games :-)

I agree...
That it’s an odd idea considering that teams have already scheduled games years down the road. However, I imagine that almost every conference would reach the 20 game mark considering that would mean roughly one game against a BCS conference team per year. Most of the little guys have more than one in an effort to make money. For the BCS conferences, I imagine most of them would also qualify as well although I can’t be certain of it.
In the end it probably doesn’t matter because I don’t see a proposal by the MWC to change the BCS ever passing.
Might be closer than I thought...
someone is welcome to check my math…but I think the Big XII has only 11 games like this in 2009…might be cutting it close :-)

I counted 11 as well.
The conference would only have to play 9 games against BCS conference opponents the next year, however, which is almost assured to happen. I can’t see four teams not playing a BCS opponent. This would be more difficult for the Pac-10 with two less teams. Every team would have to play a BCS opponent out of conference to be eligible

so here's my question:
“Under his proposal, a conference would qualify for one of the BCS bowls only by meeting two criteria: playing at least 20 regular-season games in a two-year period against teams from the six major BCS conferences”
So basically, if you don’t play enough BCS opponents, you’re not a BCS conference. But if a conference suddenly isn’t a “BCS conference,” then do your games against that conference no longer count against your list of BCS opponents? Talk about a problem with semantics…the Big East is a BCS conference, but they didn’t play enough BCS opponents, so they’re not playing in BCS bowl. But the SEC’s games against Big East opponents count toward their total of BCS opponents? Eh?

That is an interesting point...
confusing, interesting and a questions that would probably end the life and career of Lee Corso

I'll just ask Lee to cover his ears...

And we thought the Big 12 tiebreaker was confusing...
Good question. The writers probably assume the BCS conferences won’t mess that up. However, as my 8th grade history teacher, the legendary Col. Perkins liked to say, “When you assume, you make an ass of u and me.”
