First. (only reason I'm doing this is because I just heard
that Michael Jackson is dead at 50.
Nomination for the "It Was Only A Matter Of Time..." Award: Carlos Zambrano was suspended for "Inappropriate and violent actions on the field and in the dugout."
Only guy crazier than Carlos Zambrano in baseball is Julian Tavarez

Saw earlier that he had been rushed to UCLA med center around 12:30 LA time.
he was unconscious, not breathing at his home. CNN.com is saying it was cardiac arrest.

Crap, beat me to it.
Was just getting ready to post that exact image.
Could care less about Wacko Jacko
Jackson is a new story (in the last hour, apparently)
Farrah finally got her rest this morning.
Say what you want about Jackson, and plenty could be said, the guy was an incredible musician.

Too right, Andy
Yeah, he might have done unspeakable things with little boys, and he certainly had his idiosyncrasies (probably stemming from being in the spotlight for so long), but I challenge anyone to listen to “Don’t Stop Til You Get Enough” and not be happy.
It's a funny name.

At the risk of sounding like I'm condoning a pedophile because of his talent
A person is not attracted to young children unless there is some sort of emotional damage in his past. If Latoya’s allegations about Joe Jackson are true, especially given what we know about Michael, it’s not that big of a leap to assume that Michael was abused by Joe as well. Of course, if he hadn’t been raised by Joe Jackson, he probably would not have made the music he made, either.
All-in-all, I’ll take a well-adjusted man who doesn’t sexually assault children but never produced “Thriller”.

And that's the last I'll say on the subject
that I kinda wish I hadn’t posted on this thread, as it’s not the time nor the place.
Anyone who wants to disagree with what I posted is welcome to and you won’t get any argument from me. I certainly don’t claim to be an expert on the subject.

It's almost a guarantee that strange things happened to him in childhood...
…even before the whole “childhood star” thing kicked in. That said, yesterday he was a half-punchline, and now he’s a fallen national hero. Always funny when that happens.

I loved his summary of Curry...
Good: He has unending range. If you stand him up at 23 feet, he’ll back up and shoot from 25.
Bad: Decision-making. Takes too many 25-footers. Well-played, Jay.

Being in radio, this MJ shit is insane...
Had to do three interviews for various TV stations and voice some shit. Gahhhh!
I see I didn’t miss DeMarre going yet.
Even Stern seemed thrown by that one.
But Frischilla was able to give the same blurb about him that he had about every other international player, so…there’s that.
Seriously, can we start a collection plate to help TNT buy back the draft from ESPN? I will feel forever robbed that I didn’t get to hear what Barkley had to say about the kid from Guadalupe. This is just a bunch of people pretending to know what they’re talking about. The Inside the NBA team didn’t pretend when they didn’t know.

I'm starting to realize some things
1. Demarre got picked higher than these people: DeJuan Blair, Jeff Adrien, Danny Green, Wes Matthews, and countless other players who put up better numbers than JYD in respected areas. This may mean Memphis put things like work ethic, leadership, maturity, and energy into the mix of making the pick. Or is JYD really that good?
2. Demarre could easily average close to double digits in scoring with Memphis. He could even end up starting for them.
3. Even though they aren’t a good team, I’m starting to like the prospect of JYD playing there.
That is all.

Competition
Rudy Gay: Good player, obvious starter
Darrell Arther: KU Alum, averaging OK numbers for a rookie, and could easily bloom into a better player
Hakim Warrick: Averaging over 10 PPG, off the bench role player

good point on #1 there...
…lots of guys with seemingly better resumes went below DeMarre. I don’t really like the competition there—as you mentioned, Gay’s at SF and Arthur and Warrick are already filling the “athletic but skinny PF” role. Not sure how many minutes he gets…which is interesting considering how bad Memphis is.

Agreed, not really competition
But those were the only Forwards on the Grizzlies’ roster who did things for the team consistenly last season. The others all average miniscule minutes, points, and rebounds.

Post-mortem
DeMarre goes in the first round… Leo does not go. Does this become an endorsement of CMA’s program and ideals (DeMarre, the allegedly less talented but harder working player buys in and becomes a first-rounder) or an indictment of CMA’s program (Leo, the more talented but less prone to the hard work that DeMarre put in falls completely out of the draft)? Discuss.
P.S. On a personal level, I’m STOKED for JYD! :)
Once my pants are on, I make gold records.
by Other Side of the Pillow on Jun 25, 2009 11:21 PM CDT reply actions
That and a few other intangibles
JYD was seen and promoted as the heart and soul of the team. As the wins piled on, the praise of JYD increased to a point where no other player really existed to ESPN other than brief mentions of Leo and the player of a game besides those 2 (IE: Kimmeh vs. Marquette, JT vs. Memphis). JYD was the face of the team, and that may have helped raise his stock. Leo was the silent guy who grew up but didn’t really show that other than giving his all. He was more of a silent assasin to JYD’s big personality. But, I’m still really glad DeMarre got drafted this high, and I believe Leo will make it on the roster of a team. He honestly be a more NBA ready player, talent wise, he just has to show it. On that note: Congrats JYD, and get on a team, Leo!
