Mizzou Finishes Best-Ever 36th in Learfield (Formally Sears) Cup
Nice job in the piece on MUTigers.com which includes all of the finishes in the past 15 years, showing the consistent improvement experienced under Mike Alden's leadership.

Any explanation on how the points system works?
kinda bogus that we’re the 7th best school in the conference, yet:
W Soccer- Conference Champs
Football- Big 12 North Champs
M Basketball- Tournament Champs
Baseball- Tournament Champs
Softball- Tournament Champs
And probably some achievements in other sports as well (Beef, chime in). Is Mizzou not getting points for sports for which we don’t participate, such as men’s soccer or rowing or hockey…and in effect being penalized?
Well...a couple of things
First…we did not win the Big XII tournament in baseball…we only made the finals :-)
Second, points are not based at all on how you did in conference. So while all those achievements are great, they do not add up to anything for us in this.
Third, you can only be scored in 20 sports (10 men and 10 women). I believe we only have 20 sports, and we do not have 10 for the men. So, we lose out there. For instance, Stanford just won their 15th STRAIGHT title and was giving up points in at least two sports (Women’s golf and women’s tennis) because they won rowing and were third in water polo…it is just the nature of the beast.
Fourth, aTm had a HUGE spring season…winning three NATIONAL titles…that shot them up the list.
Ffith, we were let down by women’s golf a little, since they have scored for us in the past, as has volleyball. Factor in what we might have received from them, and you could have moved us up about 5-6 spots. We do not expect to score in men’s golf,. women’s tennis, men’s or women’s X-country and women’s basketball right now. That is a quarter of our sports right there.

I don't know about the other school's ahead of Mizzou
But Texas also only has 9 mens sports (11 women).
most schools do not have to choose which sports to use
It is very common with the Pac 10 schools though, and obviously more common with women’s sports than men’s sports.

In other words:
To break this down by the sports we have:
Mens:
Football
Basketball
Indoor Track & Field
Wrestling
Baseball
Outdoor Track & Field
(no points in: Cross Country, Golf, Swimming & Diving)
Womens:
Soccer
Gymnastics
Swimming & Diving
Indoor Track & Field
Softball
Outdoor Track & Field
(No points for: Basketball, Cross Country, Golf, Tennis, Volleyball)
9 Men’s sports played, 11 Women’s sports played. This means we should be adding at least one Men’s sport.
not going to happen without adding a women's sport
men’s soccer or tennis is the most obvious from a facility standpoint, but it is not at all likely to happen in today’s economic climate

I think it applies to "equal usage"
but if you go by that, then the budgets are way off, because of football…
If you could add a mens’ sport, I would look at volleyball or the equally awesome rifle. Get Targetmasters to sponsor it.

at this point, there is basically no chance you would not violate Title IX
without adding two sports, one of each. Most schools are in “general” accordance with title IX, and therefore adding a male sport without an accompanying women’s sport would be in violation of that “spirit”. Without getting into the true argument with numbers and so on, just know it wont happen

I get your point
but why have unequal sports, such as soccer, gymnastics and volleyball? Does that somehow offset football and wrestling?
If I had a sister and we were both outstanding soccer players living in central Missouri somewhere, why does she get the opportunity to represent her local university, and I don’t?
Football is the great equalizer/unequalizer
80+ scholarships is more than all teams, and more than most combined. That is where the “spirit” of the law hurts men, because you need a couple of other women’s sports just to try to make up the scholarship differential.

Specifically...
(From Wikipedia) Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972: No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance.
The Carter Administration issued three prongs in which institutions had to judge themselves on…
1. Prong one – Providing athletic opportunities that are substantially proportionate to the student enrollment, OR
2. Prong two – Demonstrate a continual expansion of athletic opportunities for the underrepresented sex, OR
3. Prong three – Full and effective accommodation of the interest and ability of underrepresented sex.
There are a fair amount of critics that claim that this three pronged approach is within the intent of the amendment, or if it’s a load of bunk. I’m not sure what the exact numbers are, but I think there are more women on campus then men. So the argument could be made that men need more sporting opportunities (in fact, Western Kentucky football is now D-1A because they claimed being in IAA lead to a disproportionate number of women/men scholarship athletes). Or, you could argue that football has more scholarship athletes then the entirety of the women side (most likely true).
I'm the guy that keeps Mr. Death in his pocket.
and I'm sure I'd be talking to a brick wall if I were to argue
that if it weren’t for the revenue generated by football, most of the other sports would likely not exist.
that is the other half of the argument, yes...

not to stir a political debate
but I guess this is another example where “equal rights” laws make things unequal.
you are right...we are not stirring a political debate :-)
since no one wins in this one…

So if adding another men's sport is out of the picture...
what can Mizzou do to improve in the standings?
get better at the sports they have...
like I said…volleyball did not make the NCAA’s (where they had in the past 8 seasons). Tennis is slowly on the rise, but still a way off. Women’s golf took a step back and men’s golf has not done much in the past decade aside from some decent individual performances. Men’s swimming also did not score points this year where they had last year. Soccer also got upset a bit and should have advanced one more game. Gymnastics is REAL close to making it to the NCAA’s as well. Beyond that…give more money to the school to help further improve facilities and recruiting budgets is about all that can really help them right now.
