Mizzou Links, 6-3-09

We start with NCAA baseball today...if you want to discuss what I briefly touched upon yesterday, go over to Big 12 Hardball and check out the "Was the Big 12 overrated" post.  Then when you're done, head on over to SimmonsField.com to check out Mizzou recruits' final stats for the season and get excited for the future.  Yes, all D1 recruits have great stats...but still...

To softball, where the future for Mizzou is super-duper bright...

To football recruiting, where a couple more outlets (The Trib, Post-Dispatch) take on Sheldon Richardson's JUCO future

To Mizzou Football, where yesterday was Mizzou Football's Kansas City camp, and there was some series talent on display.  From PowerMizzou's Pete Scantlebury:

Obviously, the story of the day was Lucas and McCay in attendance. Both players were excited to be there, and for the last hour and a half of the camp, they never left each other's side. They're good friends, and it would be a major haul if a team could haul in both receivers.

To Big 12 Football, where Colorado has gotten smacked hard by defection in the last week.  Part-time starting OG Devin Head is now gone, following up last week's departure of star WR Josh Smith.  Hard for the offense to get better if they keep losing key components...

And to National Football, where SI's Andy Staples checks out a few different scenarios for how conference expansion could go down.  Who knows how realistic any of this is, but it's fun to imagine...especially when some scenarios involve Mizzou...

Finally...this guy's a freaking champ...

though it's interesting

For Missouri to be mentioned in all these conference shifting, I would think that even if something like this did go down, that MU won’t be involved. Alden has walked through the fire and built himself quite the throne. He’s getting money out of people with only a small amount of complaint. But, if he shifts us to the Big 11, I would think that a lot of the old timers (that have the cash) would jump ship.

The status quo is working. To quote Nicely-Nicely, “The people all said sit down, sit down you’re rocking the boat.”

I'm the guy that keeps Mr. Death in his pocket.

I've gone back and forth about this a million times...

…and right now I think we’d jump if offered. I just think the jump in academic standing would be pretty significant, and that would ever-so-slightly tip the pros and cons list toward the pros. I think there would absolutely be some initial grumbling and threats to “jump ship,” but I don’t think the transition would be as painful as one would think. We’d still play Kansas in everything, and while the loss of the Nebraska game would be considerable, it would be dampened by games against Penn State, Ohio State, Michigan, Wisconsin, etc. I’m absolutely not advocating a move here, but I don’t think it would be all that bad in the end. After going back and forth so many times, at this point I think I’m completely neutral…I’m cool either way…

Are you sure Kansas would still play Mizzou in everything if Mizzou left the Big XII?

Rivalries have ended like that before, which one side getting pissed about the school leaving, etc.

With the whole "dating back to the Civil War" thing...

…yeah, I’m pretty sure of it. The way I see it, KU and Illinois would basically just switch places on the Mizzou schedule. It would be interesting to see what would happen with the football schedule—both Mizzou and Illinois eventually wanted to look toward other non-con battles, plus the Mizzou administration has made it clear that they want one BCS opponents, two mid-majors, and a 1-AA team, meaning they’d be handcuffed by an annual KU game if they wanted to keep things that way. That said, not just any rivalry has Civil War ties, and I’m pretty sure this one would keep rolling…

I was discussing that video with a friend last night...

…and honestly? He should absolutely put that in his portfolio. In fact, that should be the FIRST thing he shows potential employers. How many people, in that situation, would have panicked or just plain stopped reading?

Yeah, it’s embarrassing, but he’s going to get a job because of this clip. Talk about perseverance.

I was going to talk trash about KOMU

then I realized that we probably have a few j-school students who might be offended. Honestly, that’s one of the few things I don’t miss about Mid-MO…the amateur newscasts on the local TV stations.

there's nothing more entertaining...

…than the Saturday night KOMU broadcasts. The blind leading the blind…or at least half-blind. (And I say that as someone who worked at KOMU for two years.)

It’s also kind of neat (in a non-snarky way) to watch some of these people improve by leaps and bounds over the course of a few months.

that's the difference

between you and I. You look at KOMU as a learning experience…I look at it as a news outlet.

What gets me is the non-stories they get excited about over there. About 4 years ago I was coming home from work at around 9:30 at night, it was the first week of January and it was icy and snowy and the roads were slicker than snot. The snow was coming down pretty hard, and I had taken 63 down to Nifong to get to my apartment at CampusView. So I’m driving up Nifong, it’s darker than hell and visibility is crap because of the snow, and I pop over a rise in the road and there’s some asshole KOMU reporter with a camera and his bright ass light shining into the road, right into my eyes. It was all I could do to keep from wrecking after being blinded.

When I got home I called the station and I told them not only was this guy in a dangerous spot (on the edge of the road when it was really slick), but he was a danger to others with his light. And WHERE’S THE NEWS STORY IN THE FACT THAT IT’S SNOWING IN JANUARY?? No kidding it’s snowing. In January. In Missouri. Was having that dilhole on the road worth the danger he presented? Wasn’t it obvious that it was snowing to anybody within range of KOMU?

That’s what gets me, is the non-story stories that KOMU, KMIZ and KRCG wet themselves over.

To be fair...

The professional newscasts in Columbia look more amateur than KOMU.

Seriously though, I walked into KOMU for a shift yesterday and one of the anchors (who was one of my professors during a previous semester) was still laughing hysterically four hours later and pulled me into a room with a TiVo to show that video. I swear it was on loop all day.

They're all amateur

Here’s another example: It hadn’t rained in a few weeks and the ground was really dry. My father and I were watching the 6am news on KMIZ, eating breakfast. Again, this was 4 or 5 years ago. I was raised in farming, and dad was now running our family farm. The weather guy got all excited about some rain that he was forecasting for the day, and said that we could expect up to .15 of an inch. He said, and I’m paraphrasing here, “That rain will be a relief for farmers.” Seriously? Does he not realize that even as much of a quarter of an inch of rain when it’s dry will get sucked up by the dry ground and accomplish nothing? Frankly, all that it does is raise the humidity.

Eh, it's local news...

…there’s usually not a lot of news to actually report, so they milk what they’ve got and overdo it a bit.

Plus…well…anybody who’s amazingly great in this market is probably going to get snatched up by a bigger market, right?
