Live Thread: Mizzou Golfer Jace Long at the US Amateur Public Links Championships - Round of 32 and 16
Yep...it is the middle of July, and there is not enough going on for me NOT to do one of these, RMN jinx be damned. Therefore, we will be tracking the progress of future sophomore Jace Long. Long did not play too often this past season, though he certainly came to the program with some acclaim last year. From my Reviewin' and Previewin' of 2008 on Men's Golf:
The biggest news for Mizzou from this past season might be who they expect on the links next season in their lone signee of Jace Long (Dixon, MO) Long is an extremely decorated junior golfer who is expected (and needed quite frankly) to make an impact on the squad.
At any rate, I will be following the action thanks to the fine folks at the USGA and this site, which seems to be kept pretty up to date. There could be up to two rounds today. Long was 7 shots better than his morning opponent Liam Logan (who won his match yesterday in 20 holes) in the two rounds of stroke play before match play began.
{edit} Jace Long defeated Liam Logan in 19 holes to move on to the Sweet 16. He will take on Sang Yi who was seeded 14th after stroke play (finishing four strokes behind Long) Yi has been very impressive in his two match play outings, winning 7&5 yesterday and 6&5 today.

They are off and golfing...
each decides to bogey the par 5 1st hole, so while not a great start, they come through all square through 1

No update on this match, but the #1 seeded golfer Nick Taylor
has been LIGHTS OUT in his two matches so far. He won yesterday by the fairly impressive score of 6 and 4, and followed that up with the even more ridiculous 8 and 6, meaning he has only competed on 26 of 36 holes so far, having not even played 15-18 on the course the past two matches. Impressive.

Long pars #2, and that is good enough to take a 1 up lead
as Logan has started with back to back bogeys on the morning.

Long turning up the pressure, cards first birdie of the day
And while Logan finally pars a hole, it is not enough, as Long extends his early lead to 2 up through 3

Long extends the lead again
Scores a par 4 on the 4th while Logan goes back to the dreaded bogey, giving Long a 3-hole lead through 4 now

Through 6 holes now, and Long gives up a hole on #6
Still 2 up however as they head to the par 4 7th, which starts 5 par 4’s in a row

Long makes the turn at 2 up
Though not a true score (since holes are conceeded and balls are picked up), Long shot +1 while Logan shot +4

and the same on the 11th, still 2 up for Long

Long bogeys the par 3 12th and his lead is shrunk to 1 hole
This is as close as Logan has been since the 2nd hole. The 13th is a par 5 (one of two remaining on the round, including the 18th)

Pars continue, as both score a 3 on the 15th
Long remains at 1 up. The final 3 holes
Par 4 16th – 420 yards (Both parred yesterday)
Par 4 17th – 480 yards (Long parred and Logan doubled yesterday)
Par 5 18th – 584 yards (Both birdied yesterday, Logan to get his match to AS and extra holes)

And...you guessed it...both par the 16th
No details at this point, but you have to like how both are grinding away here. They head to the 17th with Long having a shot to win the match if he can take the hole.

Logan pars the 17th, but Long bogeys
so the match is now all square. Yesterday, both won the 18th, Long to close out his match and Logan to prolong his.

Long has parred (yesterday) and bogeyed (today) the 1st hole
Logan parred and birdied it yesterday, while also bogeying today, so this one is a bit all over the place for these two.

Long pars the 19th, but Logan BOGEYS!!
So Long moves on to face Yi, which will probably tee off in the next 30-40 minutes or so. Congrats to Jace Long on making the Sweet 16

There are two matches remaining of the eight Sweet-16 matches. The one which started the latest is on hole #5. Will keep checking back…

And with that...they are on the 4th hole already...
Long stumbles out of the gate, bogeying the first hole. Then Yi birdied the third and now sits 2 up through 4

The domination by Nick Taylor continues....
The #1 seed (from Canada by the way) won his Sweet 16 match 6&5, meaning he has still yet to play the last four holes through 3 match plays and has only played 39 holes of a possible 54…almost skipping AN ENTIRE ROUND.

and the website was nice enough to wait for me to update….
Long bogeyed the par 4 14th to give Yi back a 1 up lead with 4 holes to play. I imagine they really are done unless there is a weather stoppage, but we shall see.

oooh...scoretracker screws me...
only Long bogeyed the 17th, and could not get the stroke back on the 18th, falling 1 down to Sang Li. A great run by the future sophomore and one can only hope it is a glimpse of what he will do coming up this season and in the future.
