Missouri Tigers defeat Furman Paladins, 52-12

Taking care of business.

Consider this your postgame reaction thread. I presume it will be pretty positive tonight.

Now THAT is the score I like.

Not any of this 27-20 BS.

I left at halftime

the kids were wearin me out…

Up 42 – 0 at half, so I’ll have to get a rundown on the 2nd half, but just FYI, the box score or the final score must be off, you have 3rd Q = 12 pts, and 4Q = 6 pts…

by comotiger on Sep 19, 2009 4:35 PM CDT reply actions

As is the MU score

Up 42 – zip at half, and with a final score of 52, 3Q = 10 and 4Q = 3… then final is either 52 or 55..

Looks like Washington

is giving USC a run for their money.

Virginia Tech is officially pooping the bed

Nebraska may really be back

Neb just took 30 yards of penalties

2 holdings, 2 false starts, to move back from the Va 6 to the 36… mix that in with some incompletions and then a punt, the bed pooping may be a 2 way street here.

All I know is I don’t wanna sleep anywhere near the place.

It's definitely a defensive battle

Mizzou didn't win this game by moving the chains all the time

they won it by racking up yards on a few loooong runs and catches for TD. And I don’t think it was because Furman was playing ridiculously aggressive run defense either. That actually worries me… We muscled past these guys based on a few athletic long plays, not by dominating play-by-play football… Give them better safeties and take two or three of those long plays away, and the yardage is close to even.

I guess I’ll wait for Bill’s full statistical breakdown, but Illinois is looking like the aberration here, and it seems we may have a good but not great team – very 8&4esque.

Doing my own bunny quick analysis

Punched data on passes & rushes from ESPN into excel (not including int’s or returns, and stopping when Costello comes in to cut out the junk time), and I am only partly right here.
Mizzou gets 336 yards passing (17.7yards per completion) to Furman’s 180 (10.6 yards per completion), and Mizzou gets 75 yards rushing (4.2 per non-zero attempt) to Furman’s 57 (2.5 per).

BUT, If you assume Furman were only a little better, had secondaries that Mizzou can’t blow past so easily, and Mizzou’s runs get capped at 20 yards each, Mizzou loses 84 yards of passing, making it 252 total yards vs. 180… which is a whole bunch closer.

So taking away the long bombs, Mizzou was the better team, but not a MASSIVELY dominant one.

USC's lack of a real QB will kill them in the end

They just aren’t a Top 5 Team

But they have no timeouts

And just screwed themselves with an illegal formation

by cchstove on Sep 19, 2009 5:55 PM CDT up reply actions

But it would stop the clock right?

And they’ve got to get 85 yards in 2 or 3 plays, what’s 90?

INT!

Even though they lost

I’m officially scared to play Nebraska

by ratherfantastic on Sep 19, 2009 6:01 PM CDT reply actions

Well, I'll break it down like this

I’m not very scared of Zac Lee. He’s only slightly above average when he’s playing his best. The only real scary guy on offense is Helu, but we can stop him on defense. But when you add:

1) Loud, drunken crowd
2) Rookie QB
3) Solid Defense
4) Nebraska out for revenge

It’s gonna be a fun game, but like you said, we better have it all together or it’s gonna be revenge for the Huskers. It’ll be a low scoring grudge match, and those are the best kind, but they also raise my blood pressure a ton. I’m looking forward to it.

Yeah i see your point

but we have a couple of pretty good solid RB’s, and a deep threat WR so they will be back on their heels early hopefully

by Bestofthewest on Sep 19, 2009 6:13 PM CDT up reply actions

I'm not.

Did you watch the whole game? Nebraska looked terrible! I’m not saying it’s an automatic win, but I’m confident.

Meh.

It only serves to reinforce my opinions of USC (good but vulnerable, especially when they don’t give Joe McKnight the rock), Washington (on the rise) and Ohio State (not that good).
