I start to go for Alabama...

…and then I remember they’re Alabama. This is like trying to figure out who to root for between the Yankees and Manchester United.

Exactly

Texas gets my allegiance tonight because I live in the midst of these over-the-top Alabama fans, but it’s a lukewarm support. I’m pretty high on the don’t -really-care scale.

by AlaTiger on Jan 7, 2010 6:47 PM CST up reply actions

Maybe I'm in the minority...

…but I’m relatively uninterested in this game. I’m going to watch it, and I’m probably going to comment on here a lot about it, but the game doesn’t really intrigue me. Texas bores me. Alabama bores me. I don’t particularly care for either team.

It would be best — for me, at least — if one team just got up by 30 quickly so I could go watch something else. I hear ESPN2 is showing World’s Strongest Man!

What do tigers dream of when they take a little tiger snooze? Do they dream of mauling zebras, or Halle Berry in her Catwoman suit?

Oh no, I'm not uninterested in FOOTBALL.

That’s why I’m watching: it’s football, and the last college football I’ll see in the next eight months.

This game just isn’t very interesting, if you ask me.

Oh I know...

…but that was the best I could do. I couldn’t get psyched about either team, just the concept of football in general.

At it's core, it's still beer, no matter how you fancy it up.

It’s a very smooth drink. Looks a bit like a quality ginger ale in the glass. Hint of ginger is really barely a hint, but it is there if you have a sensitive tongue.

It’s a bit pretentious, because they suggest you should drink it out a snifter or a wine glass. the rest will be perfectly fine in my massive beer stein.

Overall, not bad. If you have the means, it’s a good special occasion brew. I paid $10 for it at Whole Foods here in Vegas. Adjust prices accordingly.

The amazing thing is...

…now that Colt’s out, Bama plays the most conservative gameplan ever. McElroy doesn’t throw anything beyond six yards. Run, run, run (mayyybe pass), punt. There’s no point in putting the ball up for grabs. You’ve got to feel good about Bama’s defense against Garrett Gilbert.

It's a safe pass, man.

I don’t buy that it’s a terrible playcall to pass, because it wasn’t really a pass. It’s a modified run. Gilbert just made a bad decision.

What do tigers dream of when they take a little tiger snooze? Do they dream of mauling zebras, or Halle Berry in her Catwoman suit?

by ghtd36 on Jan 7, 2010 9:10 PM CST up reply actions

meh

it’s a poor call given field position. 99% of the time that shuttle pass is complete or falls harmlessly.

BUT after running virtually nothing on page 2 of the playbook for most of this half — and you have a chance to limp into the locker room down just 2 scores — you decide that NOW is a good time to put a drive together?

Exactly

Players make plays. If Texas executes at all, this is still a game.

by AlaTiger on Jan 7, 2010 9:25 PM CST up reply actions

We got the worst case scenario -- even though it was low probability

the problem with the call is that what you’re likely to get from that throw — even under the best case scenario — is a long run that potentially burns up too much of the clock to even get off a decent field goal attempt.

It seems like a fundamental coaching fail just based on expected gains and losses. The fact that the receiver bobbled it twice and the lineman could catch it and run was just bad luck. But it was a bad call before it was bad luck.

Add to that, outside Shipley, the UT receivers have Roberto Duran hands.

i agree its not a dangerous play call per se

but the idea of trying to pull something out of your ass at that point is pretty misguided imho. they just held bama to a field goal to keep it reasonable, so just down it and regroup at half

Bama’s offense really struggled. The 2nd half is pretty fair, but the 2nd quarter lull (and that’s an understatement) from Texas wouldn’t have gone down the same. I picked Texas beforehand, but this game actually makes me MORE sure a healthy Texas team beats Bama.
