Week 8 BlogPoll Ballot
STANDARD DISCLAIMER: Ignore the deltas. This ballot was filled from scratch with zero regard for last week's ballot. Thus, the "you dropped X team Y spots for beating team Z [score] to [score]???" argument does not stand. However, I'm definitely in need of feedback for ways to improve the ballot. Make a compelling argument and I'm more than willing to adjust the rankings.
OTHER NOTES: I like at Oregon at No. 1, but I'm definitely reconsidering Oklahoma or Auburn at the No. 2. State your case... Too bullish/bearish on Mizzou?... Is the final five as much of a crapshoot as it seems to me?

Mizzou is just right
I actually think they are a tad too high in the BCS. Still, that’s better than the alternative. If they take care of business the next two weeks, everything else will take care of itself.
Still don't see how Arizona and Iowa can both have one loss..
and Arizona beat Iowa, but yet are 6 spots behind them.
What has Iowa done? Blowing out Iowa St much less impressive after what OU and Utah have done to them. Penn St is nothing after what Illinois did to them. Michigan is a decent win, but I think Cal is comparable to Michigan. When records and schedule strengths are similar, I think you have to default to head to head.

Oversight on my part for the second straight week.
Will fix.

The 2010 Missouri Football Preview - Available Now!
And I would hold off with Oklahoma and Auburn.
Leave them 3 and 4. Both have an opppurtunity to earn #2 (or #1) this weekend.
Annoying You Since 1986
And OU hasn't earned the #1 spot?
They have already done more then Boise. They have beaten FSU, Air Force and Texas. And they destroyed FSU.
Boise has beaten Oregon State and V-Tech.
Oregon has beaten Stanford, who is really good, but how would they fair against Texas? Seriously does anyone think that Texas couldn’t give Stanford a game?
So how does Oregon and Boise have better resumes at this point? They don’t and that is why the computers love OU.
Stanford 35 UCLA 0 AT UCLA
UCLA 34 Texas 12 AT Texas
Transitive property doesn’t always work in College football, but from the looks of it, a win over stanford is about 20X more impressive than a win over Texas.
I don’t buy the computers. They don’t take into account margin of victory (which even the people who do the rankings tells you that makes them a lot less accurate). The most accurate computer rankings (For predicing the results of future games) out there are the Sagarin Predictor ratings which have
1. Oregon
2. Stanford
3. TCU
4. Boise
5. Alabama
Notice Oklahoma is not found here. Mostly because of their underwhelming performances against Cincinatti, Air Force (If people want to claim Mizzou’s schedule is weak and not give them credit for beating SDSU, NOBODY can give OU credit for beating Air Force anymore) and Utah State (Who SDSU also destroyed by the way). Florida St was a good solid win. But is it any more impressive than beating Stanford, or beating Va Tech on the road, and Oregon St? No.
Has Oklahoma played a good schedule? Yes. Is it as difficult as the computers and national pundits want you to think? No. But none of this really matters. OU wins out and they will be fine.
Annoying You Since 1986
This won't matter in a week after OU plays Mizzou but...
Oregon’s one big win against Stanford at home, is not more impressive then OUs 3 solid wins. OU has beaten three teams that have been ranked at some point this season, and Texas just beat Nebraska in Lincoln. Stanford might be the most impressive win out of the three teams (OU, OR and Boise) but that is simply one win. OU has three quality wins and even though they beat Air Force and Texas close, they still won the game and that is all that matters (just ask LSU). A win is a win and a lose is a lose (ask Nebraska last year).
On a side note, I do believe that SDSU is a good win for Mizzou, I think they have a very good all around team this year. Very solid defense and playmakers on offense.
While a win is a win, and much better than a loss.
I personally think margin of victory has to be taken into consideration. When you have 119 teams all playing only 12 games of varying difficulty, there just isn’t enough data to accurately compare them all using just the Wins and Losses.
Cincinatti may be a better team than Tennesee. However, I am much more impressed with a 35 point win at Tenn, than a 2 point win at Cincy.
OU’s 3 best wins may be better teams than the 3 best teams Oregon beat, but as far as who was more impressive in the games, I have to give it to Oregon. I have no problem with anyone who would put OU at #1, as you could make a valid argument for that. I just don’t buy it.

And the sad thing is...
Sagarin, Wolfe, Massey, BIllingsley, guys who do the computer rankings for the BCS admit, that the rankings they provide aren’t even the most accurate ones they can create, because the BCS limits them.
Annoying You Since 1986
Then how do you explain Boise being higher then OU?
Boise has been less then impressive in there two “quality” wins
Boise won by Double Digits against Oregon State.
Virginia Tech very well could win the ACC, and that was pretty much a road game. Yes, they lost to James Madison the next week, but I think that was a very much just a let down game played on short rest. We will find out when VA Tech plays Florida St as a barometer for Boise and OU
Annoying You Since 1986
so UT got upset, big deal.
they also just beat nebraska. Texas could knock off stanford.
You don't have to come and confess, we lookin' for you, we gon' find you, we gon' find you. So you can run and tell that, Homeboy.
As much as it pains me to say this,
but how awesome would a Oklahoma-Boise State rematch in the national championship be? True, I know that it would probably mean that OU beats Mizzou, which I in no way want to see. But if we have to lose, I really would want to see that rematch. And I really don’t like Boise State, I really want to get my brother to shut up about DISRESPECT111

I'm no homer...
…but I think Mizzou has proven themselves a top-10 caliber team. 14 seems reasonable, but that defense makes me think they are better than their ranking. A great defense can keep you in every game. Their offense is good enough to score more than the D gives up. This might be the best-equipped team to beat Oklahoma. Their susceptible with all that youth.
Talent-wise, Oklahoma and Auburn could run circles around Boise State, but we’ve all seen that movie before when it’s a one game deal and coaching disparities are unmasked. After watching my Buckeyes get throttled Saturday and considering the difficulties of playing in a tough conference, I just have a hard time ranking Boise and TCU higher than undefeated, talented teams from the SEC and Big 12 (and when the B10 isn’t beating up each other). That said, if Oklahoma comes out on top this weekend, maybe they should move up to #2. Same for Auburn (2 or 3).
Now, the question is how long will Oregon be able to avoid the curse of the #1 ranking. Is this another 2007?
Because we couldn't go for three.

As importance as defense is...
…I still think offense is the key to this game. Venables has proven to be a master of the spread and teams are still rushing only 3-4 linemen on Mizzou and dropping everyone else back in coverage because they don’t respect the running game. Given that teams are cheating on the bubble screen (and given our sometimes questionable blocking on said screens), I’d like to see the offense move a bit more towards pure running plays. They seemed to move the ball well on the ground last week, they just didn’t run much because it wasn’t necessary. I think it will be this week.
Mizzou belongs in front of Ohio State and Iowa
and Arizona deserves to be up there in the Top 15.

At this point...
…I absolutely agree. The Mizzou D has shown they are nearly elite. Shut down Oklahoma this week and they are now in the MNC discussion. Put them ahead of OSU and Iowa and see how it plays out. I suspect that it won’t stay that way, but for now Mizzou is the second best team in the Big 10. ;)
Because we couldn't go for three.

Allow me to be "That Guy."
While the San Diego State and (to a lesser degree) Illinois wins are beginning to look better than originally thought, part of me keeps nagging that Texas A&M and Colorado simply aren’t that good.
Sorry to be Bob Bummer, but I think it’s the inherent skeptic in me to not necessarily trust my own team.
Of course, if Mizzou comes out and beats Oklahoma this weekend? Uh, yeah. Skepticism removed.

I agree
I hate when everyone says a team is good.. until you beat them. But, A&M is NOT as good as originally expected. CU sucks and Illinois is certainly nothing special.
However, I think that if you look close enough at almost any team this early in the season, you could find that. If the impossible happens, and we survive unscathed through the next 2 weeks*, the doubts on our schedule will be completely resolved.
- Just to be clear – TOTALLY not predicting that, just using it to make a point.
The thing about A&M...
…is that, despite Johnson looking awful, this is still a team that lost at Oklahoma State (No. 15 on RPT’s ballot) by 2 and on a neutral field to Arkansas (No. 20) by 7. If that is our baseline, and we agree with OSU’s and Arkansas’ rankings, then Mizzou should be at least No. 14, “that guy” or no “that guy”…

That's true.
I guess the point I’m trying to convey is that I remain in “wait and see” mode, fairly or unfairly. I think Texas A&M is a pretty good team — the OSU and ARK losses bear that out — but I don’t know it.
I know Oklahoma is a good football team — a damn good football team. That’s why (again, fairly or unfairly) I think we’ll really get a feel for this team’s ceiling this week. Even if Mizzou loses non-embarrassingly (say, 27-20 or something), I’ll feel better about the team because I’ll have a firmer baseline.
Sports are confusing.

A&M is a good offense
We just smacked them around, and with no turnovers at that. It’s the same thing we did to Leech’s Tech teams. Everyone said, “Oh, this game is going to be a shootout!”, and then the D just went out and shut them down. I realize we don’t want to get overly excited until we see how this D operates against a truly elite team, but we also shouldn’t minimize what the D has accomplished. Six shutout quarters is very impressive, especially in conference play. Even a team as bad as Kansas should be able to get a couple of field goals over the course of four quarters. The reason Colorado and aTm offenses looked so bad against us is that our D forced them to play desperate. Errant throws, multiple 4th down conversion attempts, turnovers, etc. This wasn’t luck. The defense created its own luck. They deserve credit for that.
Wow, RPT...ranking Oklahoma no. 4?
When the BCS has them in the top spot?

Why rank the 1-loss teams ahead of the unbeatens?
Granted that Mizzou’s strength of schedule has been somewhat anemic, it’s not enough to justify vaulting the 5 1-loss teams ahead of us. Ditto Oklahoma State. It feels like both positions are more a result of preseason expectations and brand recognition than on resume to date.
