Big 12 Links
I'll spotlight two specific links here at the top. I was very happy to see Jon writing most of what he did in the first link. I obviously don't agree with even a "maybe" with the "Big 12 wants Nebraska to lose" conspiracy theories. (You can't think of Dan Beebe as an incompetent boob and simultaneously think he's a mastermind capable of putting together a vast, untraceable officiating conspiracy. He can't be both. There is no "conspiracy" here -- Nebraska simply committed more penalties than Texas A&M. They got hosed on a couple of key calls, but it wasn't the worst-officiated game I've ever seen. Not even close.)
But while I'm completely okay with the occasional airing of grievances -- Gary Pinkel clearly does it from time to time, and I usually like it when he does -- you simply cannot act as ridiculous and immature as the Pelinis did for the entire game, after good calls and bad ones. He gets paid way too much money; he has to be able to control his emotions at least a bit. I realize that most Nebraska fans not only support him in his ridiculousness, but probably one-up him in that department right now, but that doesn't make it right. Honestly, he should be fined ... and if the Big 12 announced he was suspended for a game for his embarrassing tantrums, I would not find it that objectionable. (Plus, it would be hilarious. But that's another story.)

I think Nebraska has themselves more to blame than conspiracies or even just poor officiating
The Pelinis coach a defense that constantly flirts with the line between aggressive and penalty. They are consistently a heavily penalized team, and it’s not a Big 12 phenomenon, eliminating the conspiracy angle. I mean, they were flagged 10 times for 123 yards in a home game against Idaho that they led 31-0 late in the 2nd quarter.
Also, we have an abundance of evidence that shows both Pelinis are essentially crazy people on gamedays. Is it really that much of a stretch to say that the team follows in their footsteps when it comes to self control, and therefore personal fouls and similar penalties? People talk all the time about teams taking on the identity of their coaches, and it’s no surprise that Bo and Carl can’t keep their players from pushing the envelope when they can’t keep themselves from losing their minds on the field.

nice thing for us
is that this shitstorm Bo has created absolutely can’t help them to focus on a suddenly competent looking CU team on a short week.
And I absolutely agree the lack of discipline on the sideline translates to the players. I also believe that if you are playing for a complete ass-hat, it doesn’t exactly motivate you to play better. Especially if part of the ass-hattedness involves screaming at an injured player.
The pucker factor at Lincoln on Friday will be huge. May not be enough to get CU over the hump, but it may also result in a total NU meltdown. And CU has traditionally played NU very well, even in Lincoln.
Wonder if ol’ Jim Delany is wondering if they made the wrong choice. I love it- they truly deserve each other.
talking about tandrums
What happened to Rhoads yesterday? I had the audio off since I compromise with my wife: she gets to watch her Romcom with audio while I watch games sans audio. Anyway, it looked like Rhoads went off the deep end after Mizzou called time out, but I didn’t get the fury.

Pretty sure he thought we should've been flagged for a substitution penalty
which is why we called the timeout.
Rhoads was really animated last night, and I would say he was over the top. If it weren’t for Pelini afterwards, I’d say that Rhoads was kinda embarrassing himself on the sideline.

I don't have a problem with coaches working the refs
The refs are grown men and they can handle getting yelled out by Rhodes or Frank Martin or the Pelinis. The difference is that Martin and Rhodes know where to draw the line. They know how to choose their battles. The Pelinis seem to think that if they scream on every call that the refs will wilt. It’s trashy.

Agreed
The distinction I was going for was more that Rhodes looks goofy with his antics while Pelini looks like a large child.

After a dozen F-bombs at my mother complete with gobs of raining spittle
I wouldn’t be too quick to be throwing flags in the guy’s favor either.
Can you imagine the meltdown in Corntown should they lose to Colorado next week? Also, how can you expect perfection out of your players when you have a coaching staff that can’t exert their own self control and in this case, setting their team back with a personal foul call in a very close game?
If he acts like that on camera with millions of people watching him including this player’s family’s and his own superiors, no telling how the man acts in a more private setting.
So what happens the first time a penalty is called on Nebraska by a Big Ten ref?
Will that be Dan Beebe’s fault too? Does his influence extend even into other conferences?
OK, stand back, I’m going to say something nice about a Nebraska Cornhusker: Tyler Martinez is a good kid. As a freshman, he was asked to step into an impossible situation: help make a crappy offense good enough to stand with a top defense. He’s played his heart out, oftentimes injured, and he’s made some mistakes, but he’s a hell of a better option than Zac Lee. The way Pelini treated him last night was trashy. That’s the kind of crap that can break a kid’s confidence. You compare that to the way Pinkel handles Gabbert even when the fans are calling for his benching. Night and day. If Pinkel never wins a National Championship, I would still take him over Pelini. There’s more to life than winning football games even at this level and Pinkel gets that. I hope Martinez doesn’t let this crap affect his game, he deserves better and he at least deserves a public apology. I hope the Big Ten enjoys the two Pelini buffoons they’re about to pick up.

Exactly what I was thinking
Him going ballistic on the officials or even the player that got the two personal fouls on the same play, I get that. It’s passionate, even if he is crossing the line at times.
When he dressed down Martinez after he got back from the locker room, that turned my head. Anyone who saw what happened would acknowledge Martinez was lucky not to break his ankle in that situation. I assumed it had something to do with Martinez not going back in when he came back from the locker room. Even if Pelini was not laying into him for not being in the game, the situation just looks ridiculous and to a recruit watching is a huge red flag.
Am I willing to play for this man in a boring system, if I’m am going to be constantly harangued for being injured or not being tough enough.

I actually really liked those ISU Unis
At least they weren’t the “Man, I wish we were ACTUALLY USC” unis.
It's like the boy that cried wolf...
Pelini looks up at the heavens and flips out on every single flag… I am waiting for him to chase down a ref and punch him out after the game. Surely even Dr. Tom has seen some of his histrionics and said to himself “Jesus, Bo… just take the damn flag and quit crying about it!”.
You know what we really need? A Youtube compilation video of Bo melting down to an appropriate song…

What little respect I had for Nebraska...
…just went out the window.
Real classy Nebraska, real classy.
when they picked up that flag on the A&M PI call
I was laughing. Sorry, but I just couldn’t wait to see the sideshow I was fully expecting to break out on the Husker sideline.
Pelini
I have to believe that almost all parents would punish their children for acting like Pelini did last night. Heck they probably wouldn’t even have to act half as bad as he did. If that was our coach, I would be embarrased. To act worse than a child on national tv is unacceptable.
Was I the only one putting the odds at 50/50 that Pelini would get physical in some way with a ref?
I really expected a halfway decent chance of him doing something really stupid like pushing or poking on one. I wish I could have heard what he was saying other than the F bomb that time he pointed at his own nose while screaming at the ref.
