No Hoop M Nation today

The holidays got in the way.  Instead, consider this an open hoops thread.  Tell us who impressed you this past week (Mizzou, Texas) and who didn't (Baylor, Kansas State), and give some nominations for the Hoop M Nation non-con All Big 12 team, which will be announced next week .  Talk about the defections (Standhardinger), the suspensions (Pullen, Kelly) and the ascencions (Selby).  Reevaluate the conference race based on what you've seen so far.  Who's up?  Who's down?  Who's the big surprise, both good and bad?  Let's hoop it up.

i'll try this

Impressed: Texas. They destroyed Michigan State. Although I do wonder how good Michigan State is. They have played a ridiculous schedule, but at the same time, they aren’t beating any of the teams that are really good. Obviously this means that Izzo will be in the Final Four because that’s what Izzo does.
Selby: The kid is good. Really good. Better than I thought he’d be. But kU is worse than I thought they would be. They look beatable. They look vulnerable at Allen Fieldhouse and I’m not sure they can beat Mizzou at Mizzou Arena. I know Selby is just starting out, but what more could the kid do? He played phenomenally against USC and it still came down to the wire.
Pullen and Kelly: Wehn they come back, it is make or break time for k-state. They have underachieved so far this year and k-State fans fears of Pullen not being as effective without Clemente seem to be well founded. If Pullen and Kelley come back and k-State doesn’t go on a run, I see a Mizzou 03-04 type season for them. Wally Judge needs to do something as well.
Big 12 Race 1) kU (i know i said they looked vulnerable, but until they lose it, I’m not picking against them 2) Mizzou; 3) A&M; 4)Baylor; 5) Texas; 6) Okie St and 7)K-state 8-12 (the rest). If you mixed up 2-7 I don’t think I would complain too much. It should be a crazy Big 12 this season. I think k-State is down considerably. As mentioned above, I think we will find out all we need to know about this team in the first couple weeks of conference. They go to Okie St get a breather with home games against Tech and Colorado then go at Mizzou; at AM, Baylor at home and at kU. There is a real possibility they start out 2-5 in the Big 12.

I try to rank the Big 12

and after kU at #1, I have little idea how it’s going to shake out. Maybe put OU at #12.

Too many suspensions, NCAA clearances, and other non-conference craziness so far.

I agree with that

K-State could come together because of the suspensions and end up #2. Texas could take advantage of not having to play the North teams twice and go to 2. Anyone of those teams in the top 7 have a shot at winning a conference title this year. Should make for a great Big 12 season

just one thing.

I could have SWORN UCONN had 2 losses. But apparently last night was their 1st according to the ESPN bottomline.

You don't have to come and confess, we lookin' for you, we gon' find you, we gon' find you. So you can run and tell that, Homeboy.

Good idea!

I’ve only watched sporadic moments from other teams, so I’ll limit it to just Mizzou.

Coming on: Phil Pressey was all set to take this category, but since his injury, I’m not sure. Runner-up: Matt Pressey.

Fading: For a while it was Bowers, but now he’s regained his form and I’m happy to put no one in this category.

On target expectations: Ricardo RatCliffe. He’s doing just what we hoped. Keep it up!

Changed expectations: Kim English. We all thought and hoped he’d be the scorer on this team, but with Denmon (below) we no longer need it as much. However, English is having some good games doing all the other things: assists, defense, rebounds, steals, etc. He’s becoming the glue guy, the do everything we need man. Which might be more important than his scoring.

MVP: Denmon. Obviously. If only for that steal and score in OT.

Mizzou is off to their best start in nearly two decades. I don’t think this is their ceiling either. They’ve won a lot of tight games in the final minutes, and one they should have. Speaking of which…

Game of the year (so far): Mizzou vs. Georgetown. Mizzou didn’t win, but it was intense and I’ve seen plenty of teams fold after being down 18, but Mizzou stormed back and should have won it.

random thoughts

denmon is amazing, def on all conf team.
texas much better than expected. they may take advantage of not having to play the north teams twice.
uconn can be really good, but ultimately way too much of a one man team. kemba threw up 31 last night and it still wasn’t close.

capital letters suck.

I'm not sure playing in the south is as big a benefit as previously thought

The south has four teams – Texas, A&M, Baylor, Okie State – that are legit NCAA hopefuls. And if K-State doesn’t get it straightened out, they’re not going to be nearly as salty as expected.
