  • KC Star: Missouri's 2011 season hinges on NFL decisions

Missouri loses only five senior starters from 2010’s 10-3 team to the squad that will open 2011 having won 40 games in the previous four seasons.

But will Missouri also lose its star junior quarterback to an early entry into the 2011 NFL draft?

"A few people filed their name with the (NFL evaluation) committee," Gabbert said. "It goes from there. We haven’t heard any results back. We will address that situation when it arises."

All-America junior tight end Michael Egnew, junior defensive end Jacquies Smith and redshirt sophomore defensive end Aldon Smith also have filed for evaluation.

Some consider Aldon Smith the most likely to leave early. But he said after the bowl game that his decision could be based partially on what Gabbert decides.

"These are my friends. This is my family. Everything gets so real after that last game," Smith said as he stood outside Sun Devil Stadium late on Tuesday night. "All the emotions. Blaine, all my friends, everything’s going to definitely have an impact on my decision."

  • SI.com (Andy Staples): College Football Predictions for 2011
The 10-team Big 12 is going to be ridiculously top-heavy. We've already predicted Texas will get back to its winning ways. We've also predicted Oklahoma will be excellent. But we're not done. Missouri and Texas A&M also have the potential to win the conference. The Tigers should bring back almost everyone from a 10-2 team; quarterback Blaine Gabbert is one of those guys who could get pushed back to school by the NFL labor issues. Meanwhile, the Aggies can build their offense around a pair of sophomore tackles (Luke Joeckel and Jake Matthews) who started as true freshmen in 2010, and coordinator Tim DeRuyter's defense should be fine because even though pass rusher extraordinaire Von Miller is gone, eight starters should return. With the league going to a full round-robin conference schedule, the teams at the top could beat up on one another and keep the Big 12 elite from sniffing the BCS title game.

By the way, a programming note:

Have had to hammer out a bunch of FO work yesterday and today, so the plan is to get the Iowa diary and BTBS pieces cranked out between Friday and Sunday, with hopefully Bill Carter’s photo gallery going up today.

Wonderful to see another Big 12 Biletnikoff Award winner last night

Would be 4 straight years of Big 12 WR winning the award if they actually waited to see how the season progressed before announcing finalists during spring workouts.
/still bitter about Danario

funny how postseason awards and the bowl system

seem to go hand in hand at times in terms of making goofy choices that seem to not reflect what happened on the field. And at times both deserve to be ignored because of it.

the "kleph goes to the football stadium"

piece was very interesting. always love to hear an outsiders’ perspective on a team’s fanbase. maybe we’re not as bad as some of our big 12 brethren say we are. :-)

For what it's worth...

… almost everyone is on their best behavior at bowl games and almost everyone is at their worst in-conference.

If the Rams make the playoffs, then we could see Danario...

Spoon, Moore, Chase (hey, he’s the holder), Hood, and B. Smith all in postseason play. As a Viings fan, it will be nice to have a rooting interest in January.

If Blaine comes back, should we redshirt James Franklin?

I would, I’d rather use him for three years instead of two. It’s the only way he can break the Heisman record.

The coaching staff would say absolutely not, and I kind of agree with them.

First of all, Franklin’s a heartbeat (or, I guess a gimpy ankle/bad hip) away from being the starting QB. The staff would have to show some SERIOUS faith in Costello/Glaser/Baby Gabb to trust them as the No. 2.

Secondly, the reason the staff didn’t redshirt Daniel OR Gabbert when behind solid quarterbacks wasn’t about playing time — it was about preparation. When the QB gets redshirted, Pinkel and company believes that the player won’t prepare the same way. By having the QB be “active,” it forces them to go through the week preparing as if they are going to play and, in turn, teaches them good habits for when it becomes their show.

If I was playing NCAA '11, probably.

But seeing as non-injury mid-career redshirts are fairly uncommon, I doubt they do it. Although I see your point, and grand-scheme it’d make sense.

You also should realize that they staggered T. Gabbert/J. Franklin for a reason. If Franklin gets redshirted, it’s unlikely little Gab will want to ride the bench the rest of his college career.

It is amazing how many solid QB prospects are in the pipeline.

Add Glaser and Berkstresser to that list and we are the anti-ku/ksu/cu at quarterback

"Anderson won't make substitutions. He'll change lines - Tiller, Taylor and English hit the bench while Denmon, Dixon and Paul hop the boards. Welcome to Hockey Night in Columbia. He won't take time outs. He'll take on fuel and tires. Welcome to the Hardwood 400." - Atch

Bingo.

That’s the perfect video game move (I do it all the time), but in real life it appears there is more to it. If there weren’t, we wouldn’t play guys like Marcus Lucas either. The staff believes there is serious benefit to players getting even minimal playing time sometimes, and with the results we’ve gotten, it’s hard to disagree with them.

Just a random comment reflecting on the game

Wes Kemp made a really really good catch down the sideline.

People have been hating on Gabbert since the loss. One thing I think is one of his undeniable weaknesses is the sideline go route. Gabbert overthrows that pretty consistently. I know, better then under throwing is leading to interceptions. However, that pass to Kemp was a foot or two shorter and it was a touchdown.
