It Appears To Be Semi-Official: Mizzou to Play Iowa in the Insight Bowl
I know by posting this, it will turn out wrong, but we've heard from Dave Matter, Gabe Dearmond, Vahe Gregorian, and other trustworthy reporters that Mizzou is indeed heading to Arizona to take on Kirk Ferentz and the Iowa Hawkeyes.
All I can say is this: if hating Ricky Stanzi is un-American, then for the next month just call me Hugo Chavez. It's on.

Much better matchup than the Pac 10 teams, IMO
Still sucks that aTm jumped the 3 other more deserving teams, but that’s the crappy bowl system for ya.
Am I the only one that has a hard time getting worked up over the aTm thing?
I mean, sure, they’re 9-3 while MU and OSU are 10-2, ranked a bit higher, and both beat aTm. But aTm should get some credit for playing an actual opponent out of conference, right? I kinda suspect that if Mizzou had played aTm’s schedule, 9-3 is a pretty likely result. I guess we should get picked over them, but I have a hard time getting apoplectic about it.
And if the Iowa in the Insight rumor is true, color me psyched—that’s a really fun matchup.

Seems like a top heavy but less deep. For as less likely that Mizzou would’ve been to beat Arkansas, the difference between Louisiana Tech and San Diego State is almost as big.

As an Arizona Student...
I can say that a majority of the Iowa fans i met earlier this year were pretty cool. It should be a great environment.
I think Mizzou is (and probably will be) a decent-sized favorite, and I see us winning the game.
Finally, who’s going to the game from RMN? I’d be down for a meet-up. I haven’t chatted with Mizzou fans (in person) in forever.

Excellent
Should be a good matchup. Unfortunately, I can’t attend because we had to have any holiday leave in at work by October. If our bowl game had been after January 1st, then I could have maybe swung it. But not a mid-week December game.
On the plus side, my birthday is the day after, so it’d be a great present to get a bowl win!

This is probably the best matchup we could have hoped for. Arizona and Washington didn’t excite me, and while Michigan would have been good from a reputation standpoint, they aren’t exactly in their heyday. Iowa is in a bit of a down year right now but they are still a strong team and I’ve wanted to see the two teams play for a while now. I think this will be great!

Yeah it might be nice if teams were slotted into bowl games based on resume, but that would cut a lot of money out of the whole process. I like the matchup this game provides.
They have a really good run defense, but a really bad pass defense. If big Blaine shows up to play, we’ll be fine. However, if he plays like he did at Tech, we’re doomed.
In reality, we won’t be able to run real well against them. We need to make plays in the passing game if we want to put points on the board.
On offense, Iowa passes efficiently and doesn’t turn the ball over. They get 4.1 yards per carry on the ground, and I think we’ll have a tough time causing fumbles there.
Overall, we win if Blaine plays well, we get our backs going enough to move the chains, and win the time of possession. We don’t need to play exceptional offense, but we can’t play like s***. If we give Iowa easy points off turnovers and have to play from behind, I’ll give them the edge. Adrian Clayborn really scares me.
I say we win 20-13, but it wouldn’t surprise me if we blew them out or if they beat us. They’ve proven that they are capable of playing really well or extremely poorly.
we get to play iowa???

They looked disinterested. Which is almost as bad.
To Minny’s credit, they played with nothing to lose. Their 4th year starting QB played like he had just watched every Cam Newton game from this year.
Nebraska is going to play Washington again. Why would they do that?

It’s one thing if someone says, “Oh man, I really want to support the Tigers but I just don’t feel like traveling to Arizona and Iowa’s not that big a deal anyway” and someone responds with the “true fan” line. When someone is literally counting change to see if they can afford a ticket, I think it’s perfectly acceptable for them to say, “You know, I just can’t swing it this year”. Telling those people they can’t complain if they don’t spend money they don’t have is kind of lame.

I’m all for buying all the tickets we can muster. But spare me the moral high horse of “you don’t have the right to complain” because the person, WHO IS ATTENDING THE GAME, is buying their ticket through the means they find best.

I guess
it just strikes me as odd that many of the same people who trumpet all the “BCS is unfair, we need to find a way to eliminate these biases” are so quick to say things like “if you don’t pay the price for this unfair system, you can’t complain.”
All that said, let me know what I can do to start/support a movement to get half the student body to donate a ticket.

I think you are combining two different things here
Bowl slotting has been unfair in previous years, but too many MU fans (in my mind) have then double hurt the University by not supporting the program in their eventual destination.
Yes, we got screwed in 2007 for whatever the reason, and yes, MU fans did show up quite impressively at the Cotton Bowl. But when NU was selected over us in 2008, MU fans REALLY went the wrong way with how we showed in San Antonio, and that has hurt us. We did not show well last year either.
THIS argument goes back to whether you are seeing a matchup or seeing MU play, no matter what. It goes for OOC similarly as it does to bowl games. At this time, and with where our program is (40 wins in 4 years is a nice step), just a little blind faith could REALLY help improve our national standing. I think that is the point here.

I don't disagree with any of that
My original (and only) point was that telling someone that they don’t have a right to complain about the process is silly. It’s a dumb process whether they buy no tickets from the university(they shouldn’t) or 100(everyone do this).

Do donated tickets count towards the allotment?
I have no chance of going due to geography and personal obligations, but I’d love to contribute to the ticket effort. It seems to good to be true that $25 tickets would count, let alone that the bowl would donate tickets in what is ostensibly meant as a solid block of Tiger supporters. I would think that the donated tickets would be upper deck seats distributed to local organizations and such.

I definitely agree with the whole Boise to the Big 12...
I’d pass on Arkansas though and take Memphis. FedEx’s CEO has promised $10 million a year to the conference that accepts them aka another BCS bowl win in money.
Basketball would be even better with Memphis and football would get a little more interesting with Boise taking Colorado’s TV market essentially.
It’s up to you Danny B.
What value does Boise add to the conference?
Other than football, they won’t be up to B12 standards. Pass.
CU was not really up to them, let's be honest
Now, it is all about dollars and TV sets, and I dont know the answer to that question as it pertains to Boise…but CU did not have many sports left, and were not great at what they had left.

Exactly
The conference, competitively, got stronger by the subtraction of Colorado. Why dilute it again? And I’m not sure about the TV money either, but I’m skeptical it would be enough to offset the payout to an eleventh team.
But if football powers the conference
and let’s face it…it does…then I dont understand your argument. Boise St. being a member of the conference is not something likely to keep MU out of the NCAA tournament or something. Their wrestling is VERY solid actually as well.
Advocating for the "Spreadbone" since 2010

Football does seem to power it
But I don’t think the Big 12 needs them to retain our automatic BCS bid. So it doesn’t really help the Big 12 except with perceptions—and you know Boise won’t give us more national respect than Nebraska did.

What did CU present?
The biggest money winner is Football and in the past 5 years they might as well not have been in the Big XII.
CU basketball is just as bad.
Boise football > Colorado Football
Boise State basketball is really a wash with CU basketball.
Our RPI in basketball should get higher now that we dropped the two worst teams in the North and possibly in the whole conference.
Sure Boise isn’t tough but if you add in Memphis basketball then the RPI gets even higher.
Gaining BSU football and Memphis basketball in exchange for CU/NU football and basketball…yes please.
I came here for some good natured banter
Then I read this… By these standards, BSU is the best program ever because of what they’ve done lately. Saying the Big 12 is better longterm without CU is short sited at best. One bad coach does not mean the program will never be good again. I’ll point out that the only Big 12 North team to win more division championships in Nebraska, with 6 to CU’s 4 (including the last one before Hawkins came in).
With that being said, go Hawks.

It's not like I am saying kick CU out...
Colorado is leaving by their own will.
Buffs are on a downswing in football and basketball it seems.
Boise could be a powerhouse, if they already aren’t, in football and who knows how their basketball team could be if they have the Big XII behind them.
Big East and TCU know what’s up.
Realistically,
Louisville is the best fit out there. In a realistic but imperfect world (where the Big XII has long-term viability and ultimately needs to add two teams, and nobody is leaving the SEC/Big10/Pac-10), we grab Louisville and BYU. New markets, not entirely ridiculous geograhically (compare to the Big East, for exmaple), and size and facilities roughly fit.
I would take Memphis with Lousiville, as a barely-passable, if-we-have-to second option. Beyond that, no real interest at all.
Memphis
has always been the red-headed step-child of Tennessee. With the Vols and Vanderbilt in the SEC, there’s little left in terms of recruits for Memphis. Getting into a BCS conference with the associated money and facilities upgrade could give Memphis the heft to start competing in that arena and could open up potential recruiting pipelines for other Big XII schools into the southeast. I’d like to see Memphis and Louisville, but I’m just not sure it will happen, particularly if the Big East grabs them first.
"Smell the perfume but don't drink it because it might kill you." Erin Andrews recounting advise from Gary Pinkel
I think there is no way the Big XII doesn't go to 12 teams again...
The CGC football brought in a great deal of revenue not just for the the conference but most of the time if the winner of the Big XII championship was undefeated or 1 loss they were headed to the national championship.
Will it happen soon? Probably not but it does need to happen.
I hope it doesn't happen soon...
Unless they’re really good fits. Having no championship game should be to our benefit in getting a BCS bowl.

I also think they have a point
About the championship game losers getting screwed. Really, 3 losses with an extra game against the south champ shouldn’t be much worse than 2 losses in the regular season. At least, not enough to override the head to head results from earlier in the season.
But it seems like it’s been that way in the B12 for awhile, and I guess it’s Nebraska’s turn to get screwed by that rule instead of Mizzou’s.
Yeah, this predictable dumbassery (something I’ve railed against before) was the silver lining in the nubs going to the B12 championship game. Woulda sucked if they won, but assuming they lose, the voters can be counted on to wildly overreact and fuck up their rankings accordingly. Someone should teach them about signal detection theory some day.
Nebraska has no point ...
Had Nebraska not given the middle finger to the alamo bowl then they could have been a legitimate choice there. Instead, they told alamo, a technically higher bowl, that they were not interested and relied on reputation to get into insight. I think one makes their bed and they have to lie in it.

Love that you’re coming down here for some friendly pre-game banter. Shows that you’re a classy and charming bunch. Almost makes me feel conflicted that we’re going to massacre your team, ripping them LIMB from LIMB like the DUMB BRAYING ANIMALS WHO FOLLOW THEM, AWRRR HA HA [veins throb in neck].

Hello BroncoHawkeye.
After reading your comments on this thread, and the Insight Bowl thread at BHGP, I’ve discovered you are a douche bag. Especially when you insulted my hometown’s paper. Jennifer Floyd Engel is actually a very good columnist, and is well-liked. But I shouldn’t nitpick; every comment you’ve posted has been douchebag-esque, not just that one.
Cheers.

Ugh.
Let’s distance from Jennifer Floyd Engel. Mizzou’s got plenty of tremendous journalists to name before we get to that professional pot-stirrer.

This this this and this
I hate so much about the way she chooses to be. She is almost an ideal stereotype of lazy and reactionary journalism. And as one of the other few Mizzou fans living in Dallas I don’t feel we get enough chances to shit on her complete lack of journalistic integrity.
You're right, she seems totally beloved.
That’s why it says in her bio on the paper’s website that her nickname is the “Little Ball of Hate.” Disliking her writing style (and I’m sorry, but that column was awful) is not the same as an attack on your “hometown’s paper.” I hated Bernie Lincicome when he wrote for the Rocky Mountain News, but it didn’t mean I hated my hometown paper.
Dude lighten up. Nobody else seems as outraged as you, and personal attacks are ridiculous here. I thought comment boards were for fun, not spewing hate.
Cheers.

Saying you're a douchebag is not spewing hate, no hatred towards you.
I’m just giving you the competitive banter you came here seeking.
PTDsports.com
Well fair enough
I guess I don’t go straight for name calling when I want some competitive banter. Again, keyword was “fun,” but I guess take that how you want. I just don’t understand how calling out a journalist makes me a douchebag. Nor mentioning the 5th Down, which I didn’t realize would piss people off after all this time. My bad dude.

It seems like the posters over at Black Heart seem to think that playing the #12 team in the nation...
Is a poor bowl bid. Hmmm.
It's not that
It’s more that Iowa fans are still trying to deal with the disappointment of the season. And we haven’t done well in games held in Arizona, so . . . it’s no disrespect intended for Mizzou at all. Just Hawkeye fans trying to deal.
We understand..
..sort of. They year we were ranked top 10 to start the season (maybe even top 5.. dont remember). We had a couple bad loses, then ended up playing northwestern. we were none-to-thrilled, and complained plenty.

“Hell, even Nebraska beat them! If we get healthy and find a way to break the curse of the west of the mountains thingy, we could/should beat them soundly. This matchup is a letdown, just like the rest of the season. Oh well. Go Iowa Awesome!”
Last time I check they lost 5 freaking games this year and are unranked! Sorry you guys couldn’t play a top 10 team, maybe you shouldn’t lose to Minn.
Chill.

Yeah, Missouri could be just about anyone: Purdue, Wake Forest, Univ. of Central Florida, Southern Miss, Grambling State and several other teams that would be more interesting to play.

Technically the Insight Bowl is a poor bowl bid for a Big Ten team that is no worse than 4th in the league
because the Insight Bowl gets the 5th pick and this year it got the a de facto 6th pick because we got two teams into the BCS. So it really has nothing to do with Missouri as our opponent, and everything to do with our own incompetence. The two teams that were selected ahead of us in bowl pecking order were Michigan (we killed them at Michigan) and Penn St. (we killed them at Iowa). The Outback and the Gator pay more than the Insight Bowl…but I’m fine with playing you guys. It will probably be a pick ’em in Vegas. It should be a good game.
"I wish you luck with a capital 'F'" - The Real Elvis.
well if you wanna bitch about the bowl selection process

by nickpapagiorgio on Dec 5, 2010 10:02 PM CST up reply actions
I would be beyond shocked if Mizzou isn't favored pretty decently
Losing 3 in a row—-2 of which are to Northwestern and Minnesota—-does not make Vegas like you.
Not afraid to nitpick
think they have some injury issues that could improve by the game
not sure though.
plus, you never really know who will show up in a bowl game. i wouldn’t want to bet on it.
by nickpapagiorgio on Dec 5, 2010 10:04 PM CST up reply actions

Annoying You Since 1986
And Sagarin predictor has Mizzou as a 5 point favorite on a neutral field.
So that makes sense.
Annoying You Since 1986
well then you should embrace the opportunity
that you get to play a 10-2, ranked big 12 team. that’s the kind of matchup you would get in a bcs or outback bowl. iowa got lucky with its matchup, in my opinion. it’s a product of the big 12 being so balanced this year.

I think you're going to find that Iowa is not impressed with rankings or anything along those lines
we beat the #5 team by 31 points this year and, yes, lost to Northwestern and Minnesota. So who are we really? We’re both.
"I wish you luck with a capital 'F'" - The Real Elvis.
Yeah, our ratings at FO had no idea what to do with you guys.
So…congrats on being the second highest-rated five-loss team?
http://www.footballoutsiders.com/stats/fplus2010
I think you'll find that we are not a team that can be quantified
this team will have a large number of guys play on Sunday. Our piss poor record was a function of some shit that we have not figured out, little having to do with stats, talent or competition.
But here is a stat for you, we lead every game at the 56 minute mark. And found a way to lose 5 games and we have not lost by double digits since 2007. I know we won’t lose by much, but I could see anything from a 9 point loss to a 28 point win.
"I wish you luck with a capital 'F'" - The Real Elvis.
can't say you won't lose by 28 but say you will win by 28.
but, your best player on defense went to my high school and will be playing on sundays. guess i can root for that?

Why did we really get Insight and NU Holiday?
I saw we’re BCS12 and Nubs are 18, I know the Nubs just lost, but if the bowls pick for biggest $ and travel, would not NU v Iowa be a complete sell out, and MU v UW have a little interest in San Diego? (prob. similar to MU v Iowa)
Now neither game will be a blockbuster since there’s no Nub interest and everyone says we don’t travel.
What am I missing here, or is it true the B12 pushed the Insight to make this call and not feature a future (2011) B10 matchup and highlight the B12 hypocracy?
Black and Gold!
How would a matchup that fans are going to see for the next 30+ years beat a matchup that hasn't happened in 100 years?
Missouri clearly doesn’t travel as bad as people think. See our last 3 bowl games.
Can’t see NU vs Iowa being any bigger than MU vs Iowa or NU vs Wash.
The whole Dan BB said to chose MU over NU plot is pure idiocy unless BB WANTS to get fired because there is no way that wouldn’t leak.
Just b/c something hasn't happened in 100 yrs, doesn't mean everyone wants it.
Thanks for your view, for sure.
I’m still not convinced. Nu v Iowa would be huge and totally sold out. Everyone gets up to play the Corn and they already consider themselves rivals. This is just setting the stage for the next game with some persomell changes and another season of practice to come. By the same token, people would love to see Arkansas vs. OU even if Arky was coming in to the B12 next year, no?
You think MU v Iowa would make a ton more money than MU v UW would?
All I’m ever told is follow the MONEY. If you follow the money here, it says NU v Iowa = $$$$. MU v Iowa = $$. Mu v UW = $$. NU v UW = $$$.
Please sell me on this.

The same reason that people aren't clamoring for TCU or Boise vs a Big East opp or MWC...
The whole “preview of what’s to come” is just a novelty idea.
I’m not saying that UW vs MU and NU vs UW or any of those combination’s are going to be a huge seller. I’m just saying that none of the NU/UW/MU/IU are going to be huge sellers. I just can’t see one being bigger over the over. Certainly no one is saying “man I sure wish I could see what it would be like if MU played Washington” or “what if Nebraska and Washington played AGAIN!?!”
It’s all just a “well Holiday took NU and Insight took MU thing.” Win some lose some I guess…
The only reason...
NU vs. UW = $$$ is stupidity. Washington is barely a bowl team and the Nubs killed them in Washington. How much do you want to bet that game should be over by halftime when they play it again.
The two fanbases: delusional Nebraska fans who only have Nebraska football in their lives and delusional UW fanbases who think purported #1 pick Jake Locker is actually good and somehow now they are relevant in college football again – not to mention after going winless 2 years ago Washington is desperate to go to a bowl.
