Insight, eh?

  • MUtigers.com: Mizzou Accepts Bid from Insight Bowl
  • KC Star: Insight bound: Pinkel urges Mizzou fans to flock to bowl

With surprising bluntness, Missouri coach Gary Pinkel explained why, when he began the reclamation project of MU football a decade ago, he and Missouri athletic director Mike Alden dropped a four-year series against Iowa set for 2005 through 2008.

"We got ‘em off the schedule because they’re good," Pinkel said. "We were building our program and that didn’t make a lot of sense to me to play such a great football program.

"I would say that was an intelligent decision."

    ...

MU wide receiver T.J. Moe spoke with just as much boldness on how Missouri, after being passed over by the Insight last season for Iowa State, was taken by the Insight over Nebraska.

"I know a lot of times we’ve been snubbed in the bowls a little bit," Moe said.

"I know right now, Nebraska has one more loss on their record (9-3) than Missouri does. That’s good for us.

"You’ve got 10 wins in a season, I don’t think you’re too worried about what bowl you’re going to after that. You either get screwed or you don’t. It’s not up to us any more.

"I don’t know if anybody got screwed."

Nebraska fans, Moe was told, might disagree, with the Cornhuskers going to the Holiday Bowl to play Washington.

"Nebraska always thinks they got screwed," Moe shot back.

  • The Trib (Dave Matter): Further Insight: Missouri vs. Iowa

Pinkel downplayed the impact the Insight Bowl would have on Missouri’s recruiting efforts against Iowa, but it’s a topic offensive coordinator/recruiting coordinator David Yost was more than happy to discuss. I’ll share more on his thoughts later this week, but the Tigers run across Iowa on the recruiting trail all the time, in St. Louis, Kansas City, the Springfield area and even down in Texas. Iowa has five players on its roster from St. Louis — including two standout starters in receiver Marvin McNutt and All-American defensive end Adrian Clayborn, whom MU recruited heavily. Missouri also recruited Iowa D-tackle Christian Ballard, a native of Lawrence, Kan. Missouri has two players who were initially committed to Iowa and changed their pledge to MU: defensive end Marcus Malbrough and tight end Matt Hoch.

So this has kind of taken the wind out of our sails, or some other cliche, No disrespect, but it seems most(not all) Iowa fans just want this season to be over.

That's the question I think a lot of Iowa fans are asking,

Whether this team actually cares about the bowl game, because a win would certainly be a morale booster going into to the spring, but on the other end of the spectrum, I can’t even begin to think about what a loss would do to this team. It will be interesting for sure.

That site has a bizarre mixture of disappointment and overconfidence.

(1) How an unranked 7-5 football team can complain that it was passed over for better bowls, when they’re getting to play a 10-2 top-15 team is beyond my capacity to understand.

(2) There are a lot of people over there that think Iowa should whip Missouri, which is also very hard to understand. One of them suggested that Missouri was largely “untested,” which is funny since we are #7 in SOS.

(3) They’re actually several of them that think Iowa should win by 21+.

Most people probably don't realize Mizzou is ranked #12

but as you know, nobody in the midwest gets any press, and be honest, you play in the Big 12 North, so that record has to be taken with a grain of salt. Mizzou is going to be the only “North” team that will be any good in the coming years.

Good point...

But I’m not sure the fans of a 10-2 team with a strong SOS shouldn’t expect to beat a 7-5 team, whereas the fans of the 7-5 team seem to be saying something unproven about their team or the 10-2 team when they’re expectation is a win (let alone a blowout).

In the case of BHGP, I’d say the common assumption about Missouri is that we’re untested because we play in the Big 12 North. While everyone is free to think whatever they’d like, this assumption is patently false.

I think most people on RMN, on the other hand, think that Iowa is far better than their 7-5 record (the victory over Indiana included). I hope we beat Iowa, but I realize that we may not.

Hopefully the Missouri team that beat A&M and OU appears and plays against the Iowa team that beat Michigan St.

by mpfische on Dec 7, 2010 4:19 PM CST up reply actions

That's the strange thing about college football

because there is not a playoff, teams are evaluated based too much on their record…because if you don’t lose you ascend. Even if your schedule is seemingly weak. Most people did not think Texas last year was the second best team in the land (Florida was perceived by most talking heads to be a much stronger team), but because of their record they were very much an appropriate choice for the title game.

In the NFL analysis is done very differently. For example, most people did not believe the Jets to be one of the three best teams in the league, even though their record suggested they were. A BHGP we look beyond records and take an almost NFL-type playoff based view of the college football landscape.

That Missouri is #12 is almost meaningless now that they are playing a team from a different conference. There is only one common opponent between our two teams: Iowa State. We destroyed them, you didn’t. It happened so long ago for us and so recently for you I don’t make too much of it. So we are left to do very subjective, unit by unit breakdowns of the two teams, and make wild suppositions as to which is better (our offensive line vs. your defensive line, etc.) or make even more subjective analysis about which conference is better and so forth. At the end of the day, there is almost no reliable way to guage how these two teams will match-up.

For example, I would have thought you would have killed Navy last year, and the opposite occured.

As much as we want it to be, Mizzou is not a premier program. It’s a good program, a program that’s trending upward, but it’s not Nebraska or Oklahoma or Texas or Ohio State or Notre Dame.

I can understand the disappointment on Iowa fans’ part; if Mizzou were on track to play USC, and then got stuck playing Oregon State, I’d be disappointed, but it wouldn’t be anything personal against Oregon State.

just kind of sucks for everyone involved. NU gets a team that we have already beat and is 6-6. MU gets to play an Iowa squad that is 7-5 with a late season slide. I am happy to go to any bowl game considering our recent past. I just think that both MU and NU deserve better opponents. As an NU fan I would have liked to play Iowa just to kick start something for the future. It could be worse. We could all be Michigan State fans and be asking how we had one loss and were shut out of BCS. ( I do know why and the rules. The whole system is f'ed...

(1) How does the Big East get a automatic BCS bid? Because they’re good at basketball? UCONN isn’t even in the top 25 except in one poll and that seems like a farce at that. Maybe automatic bids should only apply if you’re in the top 15 of the BCS poll.

(2) Its weird to see how the bowl system plays out. Affiliations make for poor match-ups, I wonder if such contractual agreements are required for the system to work properly. Because its weird to have teams like Washington and Iowa even considered for games where their opponents are in the top 15….

The Big 12 bowl tie-ins are hideous. For a conference that has had pretty good success over the last decade—and clearly one of the top 3—to get stuck with as many Pac-10 teams as we do is pretty annoying. Of the top 5 bowl games we’ve got, one—not coincidentally, the best one— isvs. the SEC, one vs. the Big 10. Also, why no Big 12 vs. ACC games anywhere? Call me crazy, but playing Florida State or Clemson would be pretty fun.

That was extremely hard. What a bunch of babies.

JimmytheRed, wanna give you props for being an adult about it. I don’t recall reading much of the comments regarding the Texas Bowl thing last year, but I certainly hope Mizzou fans didn’t whine that much. If they did, they got what they deserved with an ass-kicking by Navy.

The bottom line is the SYSTEM screwed everybody. This year was a perfect example of why a playoff system is needed, and how the bowl system is messed up. The Big East actually having ANY team in the BCS games is a joke. Being bowl eligible at 6-6 is funny too, no .500 team should play in the post season. You didn’t get it done during the year, get better in the offseason.

The Big 12 was pretty top heavy this year with NU, MU, OSU, OU and A&M all being very good, each team beat somebody else so it was very murky at the top as to who was the best team. But ONE GAME doesn’t make a season. That’s why they play so many of them.

PLAYOFF SYSTEM NOW PLZ.

by trent714 on Dec 6, 2010 10:56 AM CST reply actions

Complaining

about where you are in a bowl doesn’t do any good. The problem I see is that the B12 had 5 schools with great records. Unfortunately they decided to seed them with the 3 south teams first. I can’t argue with that as an NU fan considering we lost to two of them. I can see MU having an argument as they beat 2 of those 3 and didn’t play the other. A&M fans love to shout about how they beat OU and NU and they played in the title game. Does MU have the same argument? Yes.

I am not complaining about which bowl we are in. I don’t like the match-up and they could have done better in my opinion, but hey, win and this can’t be a problem for NU. I can see how MU can say they should have been looked at for the other bowls. Thanks to EVERYTHING being about money this isn’t the case.

I love how everything media and school is all about the kids and then the money men make the choices based on – you guessed it – money and then the media and school pick right up with “we love it!”. PLAYOFF PLEASE!

Because self-loathing fans by definition need validation from others?

Self-Loathing!

Well, I guess I was a little surprised to see Iowa fans making our team out to be something less than they thought they should match up against in a bowl. Based on the seasons results it would be MU who has a case for a matchup against a much better team but that’s the way of this screwed up bowl system. Now, if you’re an Iowa fan who is still in denial about your team results<expectations then you’re having a serious reality crisis.

No I don’t think Mizzou is a ‘premier’ team either but we do have a consistently ‘very good’ team and yes I’m always surprised at the lack of respect we get in several venues in that regard.

Overall, I’m happy that Mizzou is playing in a bowl. Nothing against either NU or OU but we appear to have drawn a better team than either of them. I would be surprised if either of those games is anything less than a blowout!

I think Mizzou is a good matchup, and the matchup might help our recruiting in MO.

I’m disappointed though because I’ll be flying during the game, and if we hadn’t been jumped by 2 teams we beat (that have the same record) we’d be playing in FL and I’d be able to go to the game.

I don't care what anyone says, snarky or not

I’m excited to play Iowa and if any of their fans come over here top talk trash, they’re getting hugged.

Soooo...rankings and records and SOS are apparently lost on guys who make billions of dollars of

figuring out who should win a football game…

Vegas has Hawkeyes favored by 1 point.

We’re not very surprised. I’m guessing lots of people here will be.

i read that as mizzou -1.

which means we’re favored. not that it matters. if vegas says it’ll be a close game, it will be.

Oh yeah, good job...it's moved to a pick 'em now in many casinos and Missouri favored by 1-point in a few others

it opened with Iowa -1. I think it settles at Missouri -2 or -3. Iowa has not done well against the spread this year. And by spread, I mean spread offense not the point spread (we are actually the second best team of the last decade against the “point” spread).

Our coach stubbornly stays in base defense no matter what. It’s like watching the changing of the guard at Buckingham Palace. He refuses to blink as the opposition makes adjustments and begins gashing us. By the 56 minute mark, we collapse.

Wait, Iowa doesn't make adjustments?

Missouri doesn’t make adjustments either! By god, this is going to turn into trench warfare on the Western Front!

Uh, you probably have a scheme that is sufficiently complex

we use a scheme that borders on electric football strategy. We’re fine as long as all our guys have the best game of their lives or the oponent has the worst of theirs. That happened in the Michigan State game—both happened. Then we retired to Miami.
